Some people are like Slinkies. They aren't really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to my face when I push them down a flight of stairs

      lol, I was expecting this…

      • +13

I've bought them before for around $5.

They rarely last more than a day with my kids before it's irreversibly tangled.

        • +25

Shame you can't exchange your kids. 😂

        • Not an expert.

@didntknowicould: It bounces by itself to Australia.

that children used to play with whilst waiting for the Internet to be invented.

    • How the times have changed…

      • +17

Now I just wait for fibre internet to be invented. Sorry, implemented.

If only we had some sort of national plan to do that…

        • I heard we're currently upgrading the copper network - we can only dream!

        • +1

          Yeah we've got a stinky

        • +7

@buckster: Telstra's dreams are coming true though: they sold their shitty copper network to duh gummints using tax payer dollars obviously and then immediately got awarded the maintenance contract just in case they weren't screwing us hard enough already.

Thanks Turnbullshit the Telstra employee that Australia voted in.

          We are brain dead idiots.

        • @Diji1:

Don't blame me I voted for Kodos.

        • national plan? whats the point?

sending a raven has served me well over the years…

        • None of us here will get it within our life time unfortunately. Better to play slinky instead

          Otherwise move overseas

      • Now kids are flocking to youtube to watch other kids play with slinkies!!

    • There an app for that.

What makes an AMERICAN slinky superior to a CHINESE slinky?? Are you assuming my QUALITY??

    • +2

      You're a chinese slinky?

    • +1

      Dabb on em squidward.

    • +2

It spirals in the opposite direction

      • only if its made in the southern hemisphere

  • Where's the screen?

No deal. You can get cheap plastic ones for $1 and metal ones for $2. And that's still expensive because children can stretch them out the moment you turn your back. Ok so it's made in China but what's the difference if it goes in the bin the same week.

    • Where to get plastic ones for $1? Reject shop and what not? Want to get one for my rabbits.

      • Last ones I got were from KMart I think.

    • +1

but what's the difference if it goes in the bin the same week.

I think people would prefer one that didn't end up in the bin; no deal you your suggestion of buying poor quality rubbish.

      • If you can find me a slinky that'll survive a typical toddler for more than a week, you deserve a medal. Regardless of quality "children can stretch them out the moment you turn your back" holds.

  • +1

Metal is the best for slinkies, so many happy memories before computers were invented…

    • +1

What I remember from slinkys is tangles, tears and grief.

  • Pretty good. I believe I bought an american one in Kmart for 7 or 9 dollars around 2 years ago.

And yes, for the folks who are wondering, the genuine, US made slinky lasts a LOT longer with proper care. The cheap ones just don't cut it. (But they still won't last in the hands of a child who doesn't know how to care for them.)

    • +1

Slinky Care 101 crash course pls kgo

      • Hahahaha. Basically, I tell em that it's not something to be played with like a string. Don't drape it around yourself. You can stretch it out, but GENTLY let it get back into shape, etc.

The kid learned quick when his first slinky broke.

        • How old was your child. I found 3 and 4 was too young, but it's going to depend on what other experience they've had at that point in their life. My 3 year old really tried to look after it at the time, and she still got it in a knot.

        • @syousef:

You're absolutely correct, syousef. I think my kid was 6 at the time. And it still didn't last forever… more like 4-5 months. At least it wasn't his fault the US made slinky broke the second time around. He was quite cross at his friends for messing it up after he took such good care of it.

But even before he played with slinkys, (this was before I sourced US ones) I'd already explained that they wouldn't last very long.

        • @tebbybabes:

Happens to us all. My daughter handed over a point and shoot camera in the first 5 minutes getting ready for a school excursion. It was dropped and hit the concrete and that was that. Not an expensive camera, but good cheap point and shoots are now hard to find in the age of the mobile, let alone ones that run on AA batteries. So it was quite upsetting.

    What's a fake slinky like?

    • +11

      A slumpy

      • A dumpy.

    • A tube that goes down one step then falls on its side and if you're lucky it will roll down the rest.

How a Naval Engineer Turned a Torsion Spring into the Slinky - https://backchannel.com/how-a-naval-engineer-turned-a-torsio…

This comic is well worth the read, fascinating history behind the humble slinky..

    • No idea if the story is true, but it wasn't a nice story. Geek name ignored for funky marketing name, shilling, religious nuttery, divorce, bankruptcy. Like a really lame soapie.

  • Your original description was so funny also

  • +5

When I was young my parents were too poor to afford a slinky, we had to make do with pushing an old shoe box we found at the dump down the stairs with a stick.

    • +2

Looxury, our "parents" ..well when I say "parents", they were "parents" in our eyes…used to stab us mercilessly with a sharpened stick and then roll our battered bodies doon ta stairs cackling as they did….

If it's made in China I wouldn't touch. But USA then it's great deal

    • +10

Yeah, those Chinese making shoddy iPhones, Macbooks etc. How would a country with such an advanced manufacturing base be able to produce a coiled piece of steel?

      • -3

Hence why they explode what not.

China makes shoddy food, crappy batteries among many other things. iPhones and Samsung Note 7 use the same manfacturer in China for batteries.

Surely you don't drink their milk powder, carry a note 7 right now or carry a piece of steel that rust in your pants with toxicity.

And you want to hand this as gift in XMAS? China Slinky doesn't even worth 10 cents.

And you call that advanced manufacturing? Where's the QA and safety standards?

You wonder why most of new apartments built has quality issues.

All builders care is roll out apartments ASAP for offplans, who knows what materials they use (yes most of them are shoddy China stuff including metal.)

      • Only by implementing western quality controls.

Anyone remember the jingle Slinky! Slinky!

      • Agreed.

  • What walks down stairs,
    alone or in pairs,
    and makes a slinkety sound
    A spring, a spring, a marvelous spring
    Everyone knows it's Slinky!

^ The advertising jingle from ~40 years ago in America. Did you Aussies get those commercials too?

    • +5

heh I didn't realise the Ren & Stimpy log song was based on that!

      "What rolls down stairs
      alone or in pairs,
      and over your neighbor's dog?
      What's great for a snack,
      And fits on your back?
      It's log, log, log"

      From http://www.letssingit.com/ren-and-stimpy-lyrics-log-l8zj5lw

      • LOL! I never watched Ren and Stimpy, so I'd never run into that "alternate version".

  • +3

ohhh, crapp… I live in a house with no stairs.. !!

    • Build some.

    • "your house just got 6 feet taller folks, believe me"

  • Another reason I wish the NT had an Aldi!

  • +2

I'm gonna have to slink away from work to buy one of these

  • Great for lowering your car for that "fully sick" look.

  • -3

Can we please set up a dedicated page for the Chinese hating community. It's all getting rather boring and silly really.

    • Just cause you love chinese goods.

  • +1

    Yay… Today is the D-Day

  • +2

Did I need or want a slinky before I saw this post? No. Am I staring at one I just picked up from Aldi today? Sigh.
