Gee, the Seagate WSS NAS must be crap, you're almost giving it away!
But still no love for the WD 6TB NAS HDDs :(

any chance on a deal on 416play?

Wow, that Seagate WSS is crazy cheap..

Only just starting to look into a NAS - Mainly for my small busniess.

Got 5 Macbooks and 2 Windows PC - Is a NAS an ideal option to back these up to? Just plug them into our router?

    • +1

I have a Synology 216j for the home network and it works really well as a backup device as well as shared storage.
If for small business you'll want to look into having off-site backup and/or RAID1 setup for redundancy as well.

The Macs will easily reference the network share drive for Time Machine backups and the PCs will use Windows backup just as easily. You can backup via ethernet or even wifi if you have to.

      • Thanks mate, appreciate it.

All our computers are on wifi in the office and our router is in a cupboard so the only thing i can see being an issue is backups might tame some time as it will be over wifi. will do some more research,

    • Yes I definitely recommend for that situation. You might find you start using it for other things aside from the backup too.

    • I would recommend getting a proliant G8 or ML10v2 instead. It is more cost effective, yes it's more of a pain to set up, but for a small business 2 bay doesn't offer that much redundancy. I've been using a 5 bay thecus at home and I don't generally backup

  • I've currently got a Netgear 102 nas that I've been really happy with and am looking at the seagate WSS for a friend . Can you get a torrent app for the Seagate like you can for the Netgear ?

    • +1

It is a Windows based system so just download any torrent app that is Windows compatible.
Edit 1: Otherwise install VMPlayer and create a VM to run your preferred torrent app.

cant decide between 216j vs WSS.. home use only for media..

    • same here, anyone like to share their experience with Seagate WSS NAS please?

      • If you use Windows based computers then go for the seagate wss and that is it, don't think too much about it considering the price. Folder sharing and setup is pretty simple really, just as you would do when sharing files from Windows devices.
Edit 1: it is also very quietly, no comparison with qnaps or micro servers.

        • Thanks stellaaddicted, I do have windows pc and was inclined to it. Desktop Linux experience has not been very positive due to lack of time in learning.

@akd: For Simplicity and ease of use, I would go with the Synology. WSS is more complicated to do anything other than file sharing and computer backup. For media sharing, running download managers, couch potato, etc, its far easier on Synolgy with one click installs for most common packages…

You even need to plug in a keyboard, mouse and monitor to set this up first time based on reviews I read of it, which you don't need to with Synolgoy and Qnap…

        • @Anubis: you just need an Ethernet cable and remote desktop connection from a client to start a seagate wss. I have more than one of those so I know how to set them up based on the installation manual that came with it that didn't even need more than 5 pages to explain how to get it up and running.
Btw, I have a qnap that I might bin tonight since if the main drive somehow gets corrupted then your files are gone without a raid 1 due to encryption and hdd formatting issues. That doesn't happen if you do a server backup in the seagate every so often. Also you can recover the files from a hard drive in the seagate by simply connecting it to another Windows computer using an external hard drive case.

          @stellaaddicted:

Fair enough, I used to have a windows home server back in the day, then 2012 essentials. It is far easier with the one click applications in Synology for additional features (only have had that in the past not Qnap) than windows, but obviousy you can do more as its open to set up however you want. Therefore recommend Synology for simplicity and ease of use. You can't beat the windows backup though which was the best thing about the windows servers…

    • Get a hp microserver G8, you can run freenas, synology, even windows on it …..$260 and it takes 4 drives.
