Lens For Canon EOS M10 mirrorless

Hey everyone, looking for some help. I use my Canon M10 for product photography mostly but also for holidays, I have the standard lens it came with 15mm - 45mm. I find the lens is good but during my holiday I found that its a very basic lens and couldn't get the most out of the camera. Looking for a better lens or possibly need a DSLR camera. Not too sure any help would be appreciated

There are a lot of great EF-M lenses… just need to pick the focal length you want. Keep in mind that because the M10 is the entry level kit, the lens is also entry level - you're likely to get improvement even if you upgraded to the EF-M 18-55m. I personally love my 11-22mm wide angle lens, and keep it on the camera 90% of the time (I have a EOS-M3).

    • Should of bought the M3 looking back

    • Bad advice. The 18-55 is also an average kit lens. Even worse because it starts at 18mm.

      • Nice thread necro… and you're wrong.

You do realise that the EF-M lens is different to the EF-S lens? And the 15-45 EF-M is quite entry level, meaning that the OP would likely see some improvement even with the upgrade to the 18-55 EF-M, particularly given that they seem to want a general range zoom lens (I also discussed all the other lenses in a later post).

        • The 18-55 EF-M is a kit lens. Its been a kit lens with the original EOS M since the beginning. The difference in IQ is negligible. Plus you'll have a larger lens and a worse zoom range. Its a sidegrade/downgrade, not an upgrade.

        • @Orpheus:

It's certainly not a downgrade; it's an upgrade in every sense. It's a metal housing instead of the plastic housing on the 15-45, it's 3 element so it doesn't get the same distortion that you get on the 15-45 that doesn't clear up until about ~22mm, it's faster (F3.5–5.6 vs F3.5–6.3) - it's simply better in every way, just because it's been the kit lens from the beginning doesn't mean it's not a good lens for the format. The only reason the 15-45 was released was because they wanted a cheaper, crappier, plastic version for their low end camera.

Of course, as said before (many months ago, when the discussion was relevant…) you need an appropriate lens for what you're shooting - you're always going to get nicer shots with the 22mm prime, or with the 11-22 wide angle, if it's appropriate for what you're shooting. But if you're looking for a general, tourist, walk around basic zoom, the 18-55 will be better than the 15-45 every day of the week.

Use the adapter to mount EF/EF-S lenses?

Use the EF/EF-S adaptor and get a 50mm f1.8 or the pancakes?

As the previous poster said: Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM is top lens, probably the best value for money wide angle zoom, and very compact for 11-22mm lens. Pancake Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM is another optically excellent lens (M series have APS-C sensor, so 22mm lens translates to in approximately 35mm in full frame terms). Note also that there are many lens adapters for Canon M series which allow to mount just about any lens to any EOS M body (some combinations will operate in manual exposure mode only, so check what fit your needs first). The kit 15mm - 45mm is small and average quality (not bad, but not that good either).

There are many Web sites testing lenses, you may like to visit a few of them and read some reviews.

    • Thanks for the info :)

I used to use the EF-M - EF lens adapter more, but I've gone away from it - there is enough variety and quality in EF-M lenses now that you don't need to step to a full size unless you're wanting to use something exotic (or super telephoto). Personally I've got the 11-22mm, 22mm, 18-55mm, and 55-200mm EF-M lenses - as I said before, I use the 11-22 the most (because that's just how I tend to shoot), otherwise going for the 55-200. I do enjoy pancaking it with the 22mm sometimes though, gotta love that 35mm focal length.
