NBN FTTP (Fiber to the Home) users -- Survey, your speedtests results are much appreciated

Hi guys. I want to see if there's anybody on FTTH (Fiber to the Home) or FTTP (to the Premise) who may be experiencing congestion issues with their selected ISP.

Here's what you need to contribute — a computer connected via Ethernet cable (or very strong Wifi connection, preferably Wireless AC)
A web browser that has latest version of Flash (v23)

Then please upload your stats in the format below:

Example:

My speedtest with NuSkope ISP

(Peak Hour, 5PM)

Plan Details
FTTP / Tier 2 speeds, 25 MB download, 5 MB upload, Unlimited quota @ $67.95 a month

The purpose of this experiment is to see which ISP's are the best / worse when it comes to peak hour congestion. So far, based on conjecture and readings on WP, is that

Hypothesis 1: ISPs who offer unlimited plans at a very cheap price may seem to offer the best value in terms of speed, quota and $ per gigabyte, but they also seem to cop many complaints about network performance issues. Probably one of the main downsides of getting a 'cheap ride' is that once you offer Unlimited plans, there will be users who abuse that and download terabytes of data a month, spoiling it for everyone else who might be on the same network since they're essentially hogging all the bandwidth. Some of the worst offenders are Exetel and TPG, whose customers don't seem to be getting the speeds they paid for and are experiencing latency issues.

Hypothesis 2: Premium ISP's who reject the idea of providing Unlimited Plans and who charge up to 25 percent more than the going market rate for NBN Plans seem to be highly praised amongst a small subset of users who can afford to pay perhaps around $80~100 a month (an example being SkyMesh, who arguably charges the most per GB for their plans and do not offer any sort of bundles or Unlimited usage quotas). The Question is, are Premium ISP's like Skymesh worth your coin, whether if paying the extra also means getting better internet?

Some servers are ass (Foxtel) so speeds can be affected.
Some results that are lower for comproable times are on 2.4 or on a repeater
Some tests were run with the line being occupied - love that wog tv
There is congestion sometimes but at worst speed isn't below 50
As for the RSP. They've been brilliant. Local call centre, they fire off emails for maintanence beforehand (even got comped for outage once), they treat old customers with dignity ( plan was 95$ then they reduced it to 85 automatically then reduced to match the current price instead of punishing early adopters)

  • I am at Lovina Beach on the north coast of Bali.

    Speeds are
    Ping: 21ms
    Down: 0.97 Mbps
    Up: 0.13Mbps

No wonder I have to let the upload of even reduced to 10% of original size photos run overnight.

Sitting by pool, looking out over palm trees waiting for pineapple pancakes for breakfast makes up for not having access to 24/4 on 25/5 TPG FTTN plan in Karrinyup, Perth.

I'm on 25/5 VDSL with FuzeNet. It's the only provider in my area, and we don't have NBN. But I like them enough, good speeds 24/7, never had any down time in the last 12 months. I could also upgrade to 50 down or even 100 down. But 25/5 does everything I need it to, streaming optus sports, gaming, downloads etc.

    Down: 24.07
    Up: 4.61

Over wifi (AC, but through walls).

  • We've been on Telstra Cable for like 10 years, (not boosted) because it was the only thing we could get at the time that was a decent speed. Yet the most I get in peak periods is 30mbps, so I'm pretty jealous of these numbers. Its latency isn't the best either— I feel it spikes all the time, and I often lag on Battleborn and Overwatch. (It's doable, but occasionally gets annoying). And the Telstra plans are awful— limited and expensive. In fact, we were actually given a 500gb data bump-up bonus on our plan for being a loyal customer via a promo they did last year for everyone. A few months later we got Foxtel HD, and when they installed it, the IQ box wasn't connecting online. We contacted Telstra who 'fixed' it— when we saw our bill we noticed that they had bumped us back down to 200gb data again. We called them, and they claimed getting HD means we 'changed' internet plans which means we're not entitled to the bonus any longer (despite the fact we didn't actually change it) and our old data limits apply. They told us we could pay another $20 dollars to get the $500gb back, which was $10 more than that plan used to cost. But they wouldn't re-apply the promo to our account (claimed the system was incapable of doing it, among other lies). My friend pays the same as us at the moment and he got bumped up to 1TB. When we mentioned that they actually said, 'maybe they'll do another promo,' really.

Not only that, the unmetered Presto you're supposed to get with it doesn't work; it only unmeteres about 50% of it, the rest is metered. I mean, Presto sucks anyway, and its going now, but it was one of the only bonuses to using Telstra. When we told them about this, they basically said we're probably downloading more than I think. No, I tested it using Networx and watching Presto only on one machine— its metering is borked. In fact, Telstras usage meter is abysmal, really— it never feels correct.

Basically what I'm saying is, when NBN rolls up in our area we want to ditch Telstra hardcore. Is it worth it to switch to Skymesh or IINET? What would people recommend? Skymesh's plans are comparable to Telstra's anyway— yes they are limited, but Netflix is unlimited and they have off-peak data which is awesome too. Is there anything else? I'm not too fussed about speed— it needs to get over 30mbps at least, and at least 500gb data. For those who have Foxtel but not Telstra, does the IQ box/streaming etc generate a lot of downloads?

    • Ooh nice, how much u paying for this?

      • when converted it's around $25

        • India? Damn even India is better than us and cheaper too!

  • It's sort of a joke I think. In here (Singapore) the NBN deploy 2 lines of fiber to every home. At present you can run 2GB through each lines. Price is 49$ for 1GB and 59$ for 2GB.

I would've expected in metro Sydney or even Sydney CBD I should be able to get something similar…

    • If they didn't stop the original nbn which i have, we would of gotten gigabit internet eventually.

you said you have 2 lines well my NTD box has 4 lines for 4 different connections at once (thought ive only ever had two connections at once when switching isp's)

That's why i hate what they have done with the NBN, it could of been great.

      • original nbn….? What happened?

        • @Axelstrife: Aaooohh….. well ok, what's with people blaming Turnball for the internet then if it was Abott's idea?

So apparently 25Mb/s down is enough for us, so what if you want to stream 4k/uhd quality bluray through Netflix, youtube and the likes in future?

“All those people who are sending messages from their iPhones and BlackBerries, all those people sitting in airport lounges using their computers, I mean they do not rely on fixed line services.” -> And what about those using computer systems in the leisure of their homes…?

“The National Broadband Network is a luxury that Australia cannot now afford. The one thing you don’t do is redo your bathroom when your roof has just been blown off.” -> Then why did you even start it up in the first place??! Why get our hopes up and then to have it later scrapped?!

"Calling for the NBN to be scrapped to help with flood recovery efforts in Queensland" Ok fair enough.

“Speeds of up to 100 megabits are already potentially available to almost every major business and hospital, to most schools, and through high speed cable already running past nearly a third of Australian households." Well I don't live in a business nor a hospital and a third of Australian households isn't good enough either - my area doesn't even have 100 megabit connection or even cable for that matter!

“I want our NBN rolled out within three years and Malcolm Turnbull is the right person to make this happen.” Oh, I see now how Turnball fits in here - he's now the one in charge of all this….well I suppose if he could, he could make it right again…? And I'm guessing YOU"RE NBN is the maximum 25Mb/s down one…?

        • @Zachary: Blame them both they both screwed NBN up and are not fixing it.

idk the number but i bet whatever the current cost for the new nbn is more then the original.

so much wasted money on old technology that is out of date before it's even finished.

        • @Axelstrife: Wouldn't it be much less because you don't need that much of a quality line for 25Mb/s up and down(it is up and down right, or only down that's 25Mb/s and up is probably 1Mb/s or something(which is still faster than my up that resides at 72KB/s)?)…?

Heh, I can imagine that we're like the laughing stock…

  • On the subject of NBN. Is there anything you can do if your house isn't shown to be connected on the NBN map, but less than 100m over there is fixed wireless?

  • TPG - 100/40 Unlimited

  • When doing a comparison you should factor in the time people do this and possibly get people to email you rather than a megathread.

Gauging an 8am, 12pm, 5pm and 7pm spread for example (im sure there are better times..) would give you a fair idea of congestion statistics.

With regards to FTTP, now I have this and I'm not on NBN (Greenfields), I'm with Internode and have a 40/100 plan.
I've found that my ping is commonly very good for gaming (4-16) at just about all times of the day - but download speed can be very random.

I commonly download from steam (inode is a peer) and I'll get anywhere between 1 and 11mbits - http downloading is different again, I really notice any international download (mostly under 1mbit / sec) and generally find Australian sites to hit 3-4 mbits.

Akamai and other peered sites tend to be usually fast, which leads me to think not only the ISP is to blame.

Edit: Speedtest as at 9:23am is 95.5down and 33 up and im in far south east melbourne - using my routers speedtest client

Good luck with your research :-)

  • Over the last 3 months I have performed 7 speed tests between 7am and 4pm.

Before moving to Thornlands I lived in South Brisbane. Also on the 100mbit plan however I NEVER received a speed test speed over 45Mb/s. During peak I often struggled to get 10Mb/s. Same ISP, Different Suburb, World of difference.

  • I posted the below info previously but neglected to say what we pay.

We are on the Medium plan of $89 with 200gb + 200gb (for two years) as a connection bonus but it was slower than cable so pay $20 pm for a speed booster to get 100/40mps.

We get dropouts of a few seconds frequently.

PS: I have a Samsung S2 4GX tablet with Telstra and it loads faster than NBN!
