Is anyone other than Bose making NC wireless earphones - QC30s not good for planes!

Hi guys,

I have been waiting months for the QC30s because my old Sony NC earphones have died… but the QC30s are missing so many features there's no point in me buying them!

I can't wear headphones because I wear glasses and it's not comfortable/doesn't seal well. I'm looking for really good NC (sound can be secondary to this), preferably wireless and mainly for flying. The QC30s only have a battery life of 9-10 hours, they can't be charged while in use and they can't connect to any inflight entertainment systems so this is a deal breaker for me. So far I'm coming up with blanks unless I go back to QC20s… anyone know of anything out there? I'm looking for wireless because a) wires are annoying and b) iPhone7 is a pain.

Thanks!

  • I wear glasses and have been using the Bose QC15s and now the QC25s for years with no issues. Do your glasses have super chunky arms? If it wasn't for the glasses issue than the QC35s would be perfect.

    • Yeah, unfortunately they're thick frames… and my vision is so bad not using them is not an option. If it weren't for that I would have jumped on the QC35 - plus you can plug them in for inflight entertainment. I just find that they don't really seal properly so there's a fair bit of noise leakage.

  • QC20s have none of the problems the QC30s have so it might be worthwhile to go back to them and tough it out with the iPhone7.

    • Thanks - this is a last resort - I had held out on buying them because I knew the QC30 was coming out - but they're super disappointing.

  • I also have QC15's and wear glasses for reading, watching inflight movie, etc. No problems for me. Very slight sound leakage on the plane, but way way better than no NC at all. I used to have very thin wire frame glasses, but last time changed to a heavier frame. But I manage ok.

  • Hi, try the on ear headphone like the Sennheiser momentum, Or even better thE B&O H8 perhaps? Since Hey sit on your ear, the arm of the glasses shouldn't interfere with the contact.

If you are really keen on over ear design, Sony is releasing the MDR1000x which supposedly can compensate for the glasses or long hair issue. Early review says they have the best Noise-cancelling on THE market right now.

Otherwise you ever thought of getting IEM (in ear monitor) instead?

Other option is getting differenct glasses frame or even have it adjusted so the arm wrap closer to your head.

    • Interesting - I didn't realise anyone did on ear - I thought it was all in ear or over ear. I'll have a look into that. Do you know how the MDR1000x compensate for glasses or long hair (I have both!)

How would IEM help - from what I googled there doesn't appear to be any kind of active noise cancelling there?

I have a weird shaped face - it's really hard for me to find glasses that fit and they already press into my face in parts so unfortunately that's not an option at this point.

      • For glasses try Lindberg or IC Berlin you find this at good independent optometrician. They both has a lot of sizes/customisation available. The former is almost custom made.

The MDR1000x you press a button and it will send noises for like 15 seconds to gauge the internal reflection in the ear cup and compensate/adjust/calibrate for the difference.

IEM is like an earplug - usually no added ANC function is needed as it already block noises by design. But there is a lot around with one, as the added ANC does provide added noise isolation. The Bose QuietControl 30 Wireless seems to tick all of your boxes.

I would try the B&O H8 first and foremost. The ANC on it is really good. And the Sub-Bass on it is really impressive. Really good for in flight use. In fact they come with flight adapter already in the box.

  • Audio Technica ANC9 are excellent alternative at half the price of QC35's. But not wireless….

    • Thanks. They're headphones (have looked into them before). Their earphones don't seem to be on par for noise cancelling from what I've read?
