    Are any of these good

  • Hey Bob, did you need a touchscreen?
How big screen do you need?
What will you be using it for?
Where will you be using it for?

    • -1

I dont need touchscreen just want
      11.6in is alright
Just word n stuff maybe notepad++
      Just need it for school

      • +2

idk, hopefully someone else will help. Not sure about the processing powers on them, especially the N3050 and dual cores. You probably want something with a small screen and SSD so it is lighter and faster.

        • Do you have any recommendations

        • +2

@bob123456: Actually I don't think Atom processors are good, but I don't know much about computers and your working with a budget.

I like buying laptops from Costco because if something goes wrong you can take it back for a full refund anytime. Something like this is popular on OzBargain because it is light and fast

        • +1

          @Savas:thanks

        • Is a celerlon processor good

        • +1

@bob123456: No, they're not very good processors and you will probably have problems just web browsing. I would want something fast and reliable for school

        • +1

@Savas: thanks for all the help which processor would you consider good

        • @bob123456: Intel® Pentium, i3, i5, i7 (in order from least to most powerful)

        • +1

          @Savas:thanks a lot

        • +1

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/182201080721
          Is this any good

        • @bob123456: You realise its manufacturer refurbished?

Probably best to wait for a 20% off tech eBay sale idk

        • @Savas: didnt see that im trying to get now for the 100 voucher

        • @bob123456: I really hope someone can help you out.

        • +3

          @Savas:

Intel Pentium's and Intel Celeron's actually use the Intel Atom cores in their processors.
          I would avoid all three.
There's even some Xeon/Phi which use the Intel Atom cores.

          Go for Intel's Core processors.
These range from the lowliest Core M3, M5, M7, to the Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7.

        • @bob123456: I reckon it looks alright.

        • @voolish: thanks

Keep an eye on this one www.ebay.com.au/itm/142056241886

Has been reduced to $499 a few times, maybe will be reduced again before the voucher promo finishes.

I picked one up during the recent 20% off, am very happy with it for the price.

Would not buy Acer if you paid me. Had them previously, utter garbage.

      • +2

Most techs stay away from Acer. I would as well.

        • yeah i will keep it in mind

        • My sob story is that I bought my first laptop, an Acer with 500 Mb of RAM with Vista. Had to put in 2Gb of RAM for another $200 and broke a week out of warranty.

  • +1

Bob please read Kangal's comment above

  • +2

For the $500 mark I would look for:

    Core i3
4GB RAM (great if its user upgradeable)
    14"
    1080p LCD-LED
    Non-touchscreen
500GB HDD (sata connection, can be user upgraded for SSHD or pure SSD)

    There are also Chromebooks.
They give you more Bang-for-Buck…. but ChromeOS is more restricting.

    • +1

      Thanks for the info

I already have chromebook but i need windows

    • +1

      Are celerlon and atom bad
      How would i upgrade ram

    • +1

i already have a acer chromebook just need windows
      Thanks

      • +1

OK. Out of interest what can Windows do for you that you can't do on the CB?

        • Best laptop i everv owned fast great graphics 2 second start up time but i need notpad++ in order to do some work in one of my classes

        • +3

          @bob123456:
I'm confused, if you only need it for notepad++, maybe you should double check to see if you can use another text editor. I think it is likely that caret will be a suitable replacement, and you won't have to buy a new laptop

          http://alternativeto.net/software/notepad-plus-plus/?platfor…

        • +1

@dinna89: yeah i wanted to use caret but my professor is a total b
He said i had to use notepad++

        • +3

@bob123456: Hey man I found an online portal where you can run notepad++ through a browser. https://www.rollapp.com/app/notepad%2B%2B
I should warn you though, without a solid internet connection you will find yourself flailing. Most important thing would be ping I assume.

        • @voolish: thanks voolish

        • @bob123456: bring it up with the processor. Just use caret.

If he asks, state you have a suitable application in the chrome ecosystem called caret. Say you cannot afford a new computer now. If he doesn't buy the line, stand your ground and state you would like to raise it further.

Or spend 450 for a text editor?!? The world is mad!!!!

        • @voolish: just use caret and copy/paste into this tool if required!!!

        • @Newplace: makes sense i might just do that

  • +3

get one with an SSD, i repeat SSD.

    • +2

      whats a ssd

      • +2

instead of the typical normal harddrive, an solid state drive (SSD) is much faster and quicker, its on the quick quick. its like the comparison between a normal regular car to super car or hyper car, yes theres that much difference. just get it bro, makes the load up times much quicker, wakes up from sleep much quicker, loads microsoft much quicker, no more waiting to respond bullshit, on the quick quick.

        • Thanks

        • +1

@bob123456:You will not find an ssd at that pricepoint.

It's like looking for a economical small car, but you want 19 inch mag wheels.

I would recommend finding a second hand laptop and installing the ssd separately

        • +1

@bob123456: I'd rather have an i3 and a normal HDD. I can handle a 1 minute boot time and 10-15 second load time to get into an application. But the entire computer waiting on the cpu, nah.

        • @voolish: oh ok what does the entire computer waiting on the cpu mean

        • @bob123456:

I'll give my take on this- basically, if you're using it for CPU intensive work like Photoshop/video editing, programming etc, an i3 (or better) would provide more of a benefit than an SSD. If you're just browsing the web, using MS office, or even light Photoshop, you likely won't notice the difference. You'd be needing to spend upwards of $700 though to get a 2-in-1 w/ i3.

        • @donnot: oh ok makes sense thanks

  • +1

I have one of these 2-in-1's and it's very snappy, certainly faster than any of the Celeron (N3050/3060) based laptops that flood the entry level segment. Only have the 2GB version, and the one in the link is the 4GB version, which will help a lot (when mine slows down, it's because of the lack of RAM).

Only thing I don't particularly like is the shallow key travel and low-actuation force required for the keys. Doesn't really affect my typing speed too much, but I could see some people being annoyed by it.

Battery life is insane, and the screen is great.

I take back that back! Have found a much better 2-in-1. This. Pentium N3700 CPU, which is far better than the Atom, 3x USB ports (as opposed to one on the X2), Ethernet, and likely much faster storage. The 64GB model sells for ~800 elsewhere. Only downside being that it isn't detachable like the X2.

    • +2

Thanks so much I'll get the 2nd one

  • Whats your opinion on this one everyone http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-V3E71PA-X360-310-G2-Pent-N3700…
    its 800 everywhere else

    From my experience:

    Aldi(Medion)<Acer<SONY<HP<Dell<ASUS<Microsoft<Lenovo<Apple

Generalised for sure based on my personal experience, but anything below Dell I would avoid. lenovo are having a good online sale at the moment: http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/deals/current-offers/deals-of-t…

I had a Lenovo thinkpad for 4 years at work, was bitterly disappointed when I had to return it, t'was a workhorse. I've just received a top of the line Dell laptop, and already the trackpad is malfunctioning.

May not be helpful full but you just missed this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/269739

I picked it up a s it's excellent. Also a few points that I wanted to make but couldn't be bothered answering comments in case people think I am being narcy

-I have never heard of anyone needing a new computer to run a text editor. Seriously? Can it run in Linux? It probably would through WINE. If so use a VM to run Linux, or find an old netbook that someone is giving away

-People on here complaining about processors, but the linked computer above has a celeron and with a clean install it's been very snappy with its 4gb and SSD. It's also FHD IPS, has 4G LTE. Not the best example in the world of a keyboard if you are typing all day, but neither is most tablet keyboards and afaic this one is pretty good (and is backlit). 3yr warranty and Pro version of windows in case you need to connect to a domain

-regarding brands, usually Acer is cheap, I will attest that the build quality is usually not up to some more expensive brands, but it depends on the unit. If you are like me and retire your computers after years of use in nearly mint condition, then you will be absolutely fine at least 9 times out of 10 with any brand. If you chuck your notebooks around or they tend to screw up, then maybe dont get an acer

I found a review of the HP G1 which is similar to the G2: http://www.notebookcheck.net/HP-x360-310-G1-Convertible-Revi…
Basically the screen sucks it's dull and the keyboard is terrible. Also it's a gloss screen which may be an issue for you depending where/when you are using it.

    • Thanks

  • Have you considered Dell outlet? Dell outlet Latitude laptops are very cheap compared to their rrp, and they're basically like new and have full dell warranty as if it is bought new. http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product… Have a look at some of the configurations, and when your ready to purchase you can just start a live chat to process the order. Just keep an eye out every few days so they post newer stock on.

    here are some of the good ones as of 23/10/16, DFO-3701116LT , DFO-3787075LT , DFO-3792366LT , DFO-3741898LT , DFO-3787981LT

I believe it's a clearance sale, because the 450, the smaller version of the same thing, just sold out last night.

    Good luck.

Edit: Check DFO. Some decent prices there.

    • Thanks

  • I think if Notepad++ is all you are going to be using it for, no point paying more for a Core processor.
For yr pricepoint, a Celeron N3710 processor, 11 inch screen, 128GB SDD (quiet, fast, energy saving) and 4GB RAM can be very easily obtained (with some change even).
IMHO, 14" and 15" r a bit chunky esp if u r lugging it around all day.
With those specs, a Dell Inspiron 3000 may suit u. The only gripes are that the things a bit plasticky and the screen aint the best. But from a price performance perspective it's pretty good.
