Did Anyone Try Scratch Repair Kit and Did They Actually Work?

Some careless driver left a huge scratch (roughly from the middle of the front door to the middle of the rear door and 10-20cm wide) on my car which was parked in front of my house. I guess it will cost a fortune if I go to a repairer, so did someone used these repair or remover before? I wish I can make the scratch less obvious somehow without paying hundreds of dollars.

  • Same pain with our new car. Can confirm toothpaste does not work and doubt this works either.

Aldi was offering a "professional" scratch removal kit recently. Compared to others on the market this one looked reasonable. However, be warned these kits are only good for cosmetic scratches that have not gone right through to the metal. They also use light refraction technology so that in certain angles the scratch looks gone, but in other angles it clearly shows that you have attempted to cover up a scratch.

Pic if possible? …some scratches will buff out, scratchX is an excellent product for removing fine scratches.

A month ago in Europe I have used Turtle Wax Scratch Remover to remove a long, shallow scratch from a rental car. I was surprised how well it worked: the scratch gone completely, couldn't see it from any angle in full sun, also I could not see any signs of using it on the paint. HOWEVER two points:
    1) the one I used does not appears to be available in Aus, it was this one:
    http://www.turtlewax.co.uk/explorer/products/essential-scrat…
    2) if you check the above link, some people are happy with the results, some not - maybe it works better with some paints, not as well with others?

I found that a very similar (possibly identical, just packaged differently, the same company) product in Aus is "Turtle Wax Scratch & Swirl Remover", but I did not try it. See for example here: https://www.autobarn.com.au/turtle-wax-scratch-swirl-remover…

You can remove a scuff, not a scratch where the paint has been totally affected. A car polish will do that. Supercheap has a cheap line of car polishes from cut to wax. Get the cut and polish one and if it is only a scuff or paint from the other car's bumper bar it may work. If it is more than that or worst a dent, you may be able to make it less obvious, but you will not get rid of it unless you get it resprayed.

Something that big on a new car would need a professional job. Cant see any wonder product fixing it.
If it is only a light surface scratch then common car polishing wax may buff it out. If it is deeper then it may be a job for the pros.

  • It really depends on how deep the scratch is. Light scratch yes you can remove it. Deep scratch you need removal and repaint with those sample paints of the same colour.

  • Before you try a DIY job, get a few quotes from a mobile scratch repairers. They'll quote from a photo on your phone. Plenty of them around.

Lots of premium polishes (eg meguiars) are ridiculously expensive - eg $35 for 500ml. An entry level buffer will easily for $50+.

I'm guessing you can get it fixed for ~$150 from a mobile repairer.

  • I think this is a great video to understand the different scratches and how to repair them:
