Second Hand Family SUVs - Opinions

Guys,
We have ~$13k to spend on a family SUV for our young family (three kids). We are thinking a Kluger,Mazda CX9, Hyundai Sorrento, Subaru Forrester, Territory etc. Preferably we are after a 7 seater. Does anyone have an opinion on the best value for money in the second hand market. Any assistance is appreciated.
Thanks,

  • Why do you need a 7 seater for 3 kids?

In laws come and visit quite regularly. Easier to move everyone around with 7 seats.

      • Those aren't proper 7 seaters. Territory for one has the most useless boot once the third row goes up…

        • Which ones aren't proper 7 seaters? Kluger is, CX9 is, Territory is. Pretty much all 7 seaters are going to have a tiny boot space with 3rd row in place, just some are better than others.

      3 kids?

three young children in the second row can be more than a handful. stick one in the back and pull down the armrest in second row will help keep the peace.

      • It only takes one extra person brought along and you need a second car. We've got 3 kids and the seven seater is great. Very regularly have an extra or two along, we can bring grandma easily (she doesn't drive). Helps other parents out too as we can transport their kids to/from parties/sports etc no problems.

If you are looking at a 7 seater check the baggage space with the third row in use. We couldn't fit a stroller in the captiva and had to strap it on the roof. Our R51 pathfinder is a lot better. Would recommend it, but aware that it is a 4wd 'truck' and not an SUV.

not a 7 seater but plenty big enough for three kids - 2011-2013 xtrail. check for the base ST model.
and the boot is huge and has a drawer as well.
back seats adjust/recline so enough from for the passengers.
    servicing is cheap too.

we have one, wife loves it.

  • Are those cars on the list within the $13k budget? If so, would pick the CX9 everytime. Although the previous models aren't as fuel efficient as the new ones.

  • Tarago / Grand Carnival. You'll only fit dwarves in the 3rd row seating of any of those you listed.

    • Sorento 3rd row is much better than others listed.

      • But still not ideal for actually travelling. Short distance sure, plans to ferry around more than 5 people no

Note that $13k doesn't buy current shape Sorrento, it'll be the old shape

i got a used Mitsubishi Grandis for 15K. not an SUV, more like a Honda Odyssey, but a great 7 seater. Adults can realistically sit in the back.

Not sure how old you'd have to go on the models you suggested, but Mitsubishi's seem to depreciate really quickly so not too old

  • I have a 2013 outlander 7 seater. decent car. 3 row is quite reasonable - could suit adults for short rides.

    Kia Carnival or Honda odyssey

  • Dads old Toyota Prado had rear fold up seats, no idea of its age but maybe look at one of those as well.

Prado for $13k? Lol might get an early 00s model with 300,000+km

      • yeah, probably. Dads is pretty old, but they went around Aust a few times in it, thing is still super quiet no rattles, think its done 280k km.

  • Sorrento is Kia, not Hyundai. Was it Hyundai Santa Fe?

    • Yeah, but under the skin the Sorrento is the same as a Santa Fe. Hyundai and Kia are same company.

  • Toyota Supra and a trailer.

  • Well for that kind of budget,
    SUV
    Holden Captiva.
    Ford Territory
    Nissan Dualis
    Suburu Tribeca
    Dodge Journey
    Nissan Pathfinder with 260000k

    People Movers
    Toyota Avensis Verso
    Kia Carnival
    Kia Rondo
    Peugeot 308
    Citroën C4 Pacaso
    Hyundai iMax

All of these are 2008 onwards.

I would personally stay away from anything that doesn't sell in great numbers as spare parts are gard to find.
Holden Captiva is cheap and plentful for a reason and not a good one.

    Best of Luck.
