Printer with Scanner for Regular Home/Office Use at a Reasonable Price

Hi OZB,

I am looking for a printer with scanner feature for Regular Home/Office use at a Reasonable Price under $100.
Ok to have a Black & White one also. Also should have reasonable cartridge cost.

Your suggestions/comments are much appreciated.

Thanks.

  • Never seen a cheap scanner/printer laser combo.

Had a quick look at officeworks, and the only mono laser printer with scanner is around the same price ($200) of just buying the 2 separate…. which is what i'd do.

  • I was going to recommend a Fujitsu ScanSnap IX500 as your scanner. One you touch one of these you won't go back to a normal scanner.

But then I saw your budget. One of these are around $500.

Is an inkjet printer ok? I've been using an Epson WF-2660 for over a year now - does the job.

I'll provide a summary based on my experience:

    Pros:
    - price is pretty decent for everyday home usage
    - cheap to run, generic (unbranded) cartridges from ebay work a treat
    - cartridges are easy to install
    - has an auto-feeder for scanning and copying
    - has automatic duplex (double sided) printing
    - has wireless printing/scanning capabilities (scan to desktop/email)
    - has a decent sized paper tray
    - has built in fax functions

    Cons:
    - setting up wireless functions for the first time can be daunting/confusing
    - wireless scanning is painfully slow and tedious especially when scanning many docs

  • Thanks all
Just a quick one, is Inkjet more costly in the long term if i m doing about 20 pages a month as compared to mono laser?

Definitely. Ink will dry out, toner won't. Say an ink cartridge costs $20 for 500 pages. If you keep it in the machine, it'll dry within 3-6 months. That means you would've printed 60/120 out of 500 pages, which isn't worth it.

Toner refills would cost about $90 but will do 2000+ pages. Also there's no drying out with toner so you can keep it in the machine for however long you want. You might need to change the drum unit but the machine will alert you after printing 10000 odd pages or more.

I made this post, hope it helps!

      My recommendations:
      - buy a cheap laserjet for grayscale printing
      - buy a cheap inkjet multifunction for scanning purposes and occasional colour printing if needed

cheap inkjet for scanning/colour printing. You need to do your homework for refills.

cheap laserjet + refills for black/white printing

      Cheapest 2 options would be a $35 inkjet + $58 laserjet = $93

All printers come with half toner/ink so it'll last a while.

  • Thanks again Guys
After a bit of research i found Brother DCP 1510 to suit my criteria. Mono laser Multifunction around $100.
