  • Is this a good ratio?

    • if you plan on using them for flights …sure as you can't do this with flybuys

if you want to get gift card via velocity ..no unless you wanted niche gift cards etc. (e.g. you can only get coles group gift cards via flybuys redemptions)

  • +2

I recently booked Gold Coast to Melbourne and used Flybuys points, around 23,000 points and then used Velocity to book Melbourne to Sunshine Coast and that was 15,500 points. So I see Velocity as better value points wise. Hope this information helps

    • +10

The standard conversion rate is 2.3 FB points to 1 Velocity. With the 15% bonus it's 2:1 FB-to-V

So perhaps the flight booked on FlyBuys was actually the better deal?

    • +4

Yea as railspider has pointed out, I fail to see how your example highlights Velocity being better value.

It may be overall (maybe for other routes), but your example in fact indicates otherwise.

It's also important to consider how much in taxes you paid.

      • Probably earn rate? Much easier to earn velocity points than flybuys

    • Why don't you use a like for like example? Sunshine Coast is further away than Gold Coast. You can't compare the two.

  • How can you book flight with FluBuys?

  • +8

It's surely cheaper to use FlyBuys points for $10 off at Coles and then just get a sale fare on Tigerair/Jetstar. Not the same as Virgin, but personally I would much prefer to do it that way.

    • +2

I think it very much depends.

If you are able to obtain >1c/pt value out of your Velocity points, then it's probably better to have it in Velocity. However, this very much depends on the kind of route you're planning to book and the relative cost of the airfare you would have to pay in cash.

An example would be SYD-MEL. I'm finding the cash cost of these for peak periods are increasing to ~$110 one way (not including check-in). Velocity redemptions are 7800pts +$21.11 including check-in luggage. If you use the valuation above, the velocity redemption costs ~$100, so you are saving.

If you don't fly peak periods, then of course the valuation would be different as the cash fares would also be cheaper.

Of course there are other non monetary factors such as availability, but as a base that's how you could do a quick comparison.

    • Jetstar and tiger don't fly between myself in Brisbane and Perth (Where my family is). So along with my velocity credit cards, this works out great for me. Though tiger will be flying the route come next June i admit

      • Yes Tiger is launching BNE-PER flights from June 2017 and fares were on sale for $99.

Alternatively, Jetstar has direct flights from PER to Coolangatta which is only 100km down the road and ironically costs less to get to on public transport.

You may also want to check out the OzBargain Classifieds. Heaps of people selling their return AMEX flights for $250-350.

        • +1

Tiger and Jetstar are mostly evening flights westbound and red-eye eastbound, so times that don't suit many people. VA have several flights each day but very rarely offer the lowest fares classes on the morning flights which are the most popular, whereas paying with points is the same on any flight for which non-revenue seats are available. One of the best uses of points is travel at short notice when discount classes are not available but non-revenue booking class is. A good reason to have points in your a/c if this scenario is one you may find yourself in.

        • @GeeZed: The AMEX flights are on Virgin.

  • +1

So.. 20000 points would be $100 worth of groceries. 100 bucks is a good price for BNE to SYD. BNE - SYD is 11000 velocity points. So, with this deal, 20000 flybuys gets 10000 velocity points, so it is close to a wash in terms of value.

    • +1

BNE-SYD 11000 points or 7800 +$20.79 which is better value. Where velocity points are really useful is for bookings close to fly date. For instance looking 2 days ahead to this Saturday the lowest cash price on VA is $145 but velocity rewards fares are still available giving the velocity points a value of around 0.16 each.

      • +3

Or for booking more expensive flights; business class MEL <-> SYD is 15,500 velocity points + 20ish taxes but retails for around 700ish. For those trips the velocity points give much better value.

        • +2

Value is relative to what you would be prepared to pay in cash from your own pocket. If you wouldn't be prepared to pay $700 then you are not getting $700 value by using points.

        • @GeeZed:

That's very true; I wouldn't be willing to pay $700 for it, but I would be willing to pay more than the $100ish that it might cost in economy. The point isn't that it's worth $700, but that it may well be worth more than $100 and that value is up to you.

        • @elyobo: curious - how much more would you be willing to pay for business class for a flight as short as a SYD-MEL?

        • @GeeZed: I'd say that value is more relative to what you would purchase normally. I'd rather get a Coles gift card because I will shop there more often than I fly with Virgin

…that being said, now that they're linking up I'm more likely to fly with them!

  • ANy chance to transfer velocity points to David Jones amex?

  • Did anyone get the offer that says spend $100 at Coles to earn 1 status credit with Virgin?

    • it's applicable to everyone when u link your cards. - 250 status credits to silver ($25,000) and 2 eligible flights taken so don't see much benefit for it myself.

      • Good for self employed people that charge the expense back to the company.

      • +3

it is a max of 10 per month, so 120 in a year, status credits expire after a year anyway, so you will never make it to silver unless you fly extra.

but I think this is one of the first times you can earn status credits without flying so I am not knocking it(think the other time was a virgin money credit card promo)

        • +2

don't get me wrong i'm not knocking it. it's amazing that it's actually available and i'm sure plenty of people will get good use out of it :)

    • Yes. The way I read it it was a feature open to everyone?

    • +1

It's under the offer section in your Flybuys account:

Use your flybuys card when you shop at Coles, Coles Online, Liquorland or First Choice Liquor and earn 1 Status Credit for every $100 spent, up to 10 per month.^

Velocity Status Credits help you to reach or maintain a higher level of Velocity membership giving you access to the best of Virgin Australia’s premium products and services.*

The higher your membership level, the greater benefits you will receive such as Lounge access, Priority Check-in and additional baggage allowance.

You will be able to link one member of your flybuys household to a nominated Velocity membership and this linked person will be the recipient of the Status Credits.

^Spend excludes tobacco and tobacco related products, charity donations and gift card purchases.

*Velocity members also need to fly on Virgin Australia marketed flights to earn Eligible Sectors in addition to Status Credits to upgrade or maintain a new level of membership. Find out more about the Status Credit and Eligible Sector requirements for Velocity membership levels.

      • And on certain things, you get bonus points (i think silver gives you 25% extra, gold 50%, and 75% for the last one)

      • do you earn status credit If you book flights with Velocity points ?

        • That's a no, unless they have a specific promo to do so (last I know of was 2013)

        • Actually you can earn status credits for an 'Any Seat' redemption, but these usually cost a lot more points than the standard rewards…sometimes worth doing though.

          https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Earn/StatusCre…
'You will earn Status Credits when you travel on eligible fares with Virgin Australia and our airline partners, plus on eligible Any Seat redemptions'

  • So, I've tried to link my velocity account, but it says it's already been linked to another flybuys account… like, huh? (Ok, I have 2 flybuys accounts, but this is my first attempt at linking?)

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    • call up and fix it up

  • So for the gift card is it worth transferring to velocity points?

    • Nope

  • For all the posts asking "is it worth transferring to Velocity for gift card OR flights". In my optinion, NO it is not…..There are cheaper ways to earn Velocity points, in most cases your better to take the $100 gift card for 20,000 Flybuy points or use the flybuys points to book flights directly.

The game changer with the Flybuys and Velocity link is getting 1 Status credit (Max 10 per month) for every $100 spent each month.

    • correct on the status credits… can get up to 120 per year for not flying, which up til now hasn't been possible.

i've been dumping all my points from various sources into velocity as i'm not far off getting some return business class trips to europe, the cash value of those things vs the points cost is much, much different than the mel-syd economy calculations… so it depends what you're 'saving' for i guess!

      • I'm thinking of doing the same with Amex, ANZ and Citi Signature into one velocity account for Europe (guessing Etihad?). Have you compared with Asia Miles etc?

        • don't even know what Asia Miles is to be honest :D

i do a bit of flying with work, currently velocity gold & 230k points
i got an amex platinum card a few months back and those points go 1:1 with velocity (got another 35k in there too)

need to get around 460-500k to do return melbourne to london/paris in business for myself and my wife

and yep, etihad it will be!

        • @jaybo:
Might be something in this for you if you were thinking of going via Etihad https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/271570#comment-4102751

        • @tunzafun001:

thanks for the heads up - but i earn & spend everything in velocity points (all my work travel is domestic with virgin) so when i travel/redeem via etihad, it's actually via velocity :)

    • How do you make sure the status credit is earned with $100 spend on Coles? Is it an automated thing?

      • Link and swipe your flybuys and it automatically gives the status credits over to Velocity based on the multiples of $100 spent, noting its an accumulated amount, so spend 10 lots of $50 in a month, get 5 status credits!

    • +1

For me, I got 500k fb points. I am transferring it to velocity and convert to SQ miles ( SQ lover here ).
And the rest might go to etihad.

      • You can only transfer 138,000 in a calendar year it seems…
        http://www.flybuys.com.au//velocity#/

      • Same but I only got 50K Flybuys. So if I'm doing this rite, it's 2.3 FB points to 1 velocity. And then 1.35 velocity to 1 krisflyer mile?

  • Can you only link one fb account to the velocity account?
So if you have multiple fb accounts to take advantage of the various weekly bonus offers that will not work as you will need to use always the same fb account and your required weekly spend to get the bonus will keep growing.

  • Considering it based on txfing 18k FB (worth $93 apparently) + combining with 12k existing velocity points gets me return mel - syd anytime of day…
    [better than fly buys travel]

    • Above based on my incorrect assumption that points where 1 to 1 - they are not.

Ended up transferring enough so that I could do a return flight paying ~$20 each way, (as I would fall just short of completely free when transferring all my points)

  • This is only good if you need to use Velocity points for flights or upgrades.
I have velocity points from credit cards bonuses, but do not fly often. Redeeming them for gift cards is not really good value (flybuy points are better value for that). Waiting for velocity to have the 15% bonus on redemption for gift cards again.

  • Guys please give me some advice. I have about 22k Flybuys points. Is it worth transferring this to Velocity points?

    • It depends on your situation.

You will get some rough ideas if you read some of the comments above.

  • Anyone heard if they are doing the 15% bonus on transferring points from credit cards in November? (they have previously done this in May and November for the last couple of years).

    • +1

hey davo_4, if you have an ANZ Rewards credit card there is a 15% offer on now. It jumps up to 35% if you transfer across 60000 points (40500 Velocity Points) but I don't have the points to be able to do that.

  • -5

    Ozbargain is great.

I'm new to all these reward point shenanigans so I didn't know if this is a good deal or not.

Subscribed to see what veterans would say.

Consensus seems to be that it is not a good deal. Just learned something new!

    Unsubscribing now.

      wut ^

Appears the ratio is not good or at best neutral.
