Need Help Suggesting Over The Ear Headphones for Glasses Wearer

Want to buy an over-the-ear headphones (don't like earbuds) that is comfortable for people who wear glasses like me.

The thing is with over-the-ear headphones, they hurts your ears after putting them on for a period, like an hour or so. Because they put pressure on your ears towards your skull, normally its ok, but sadly for people who wear glasses there are two hard rims between the ears and the skull, together they become the source of the discomfort.

So I am thinking if there is any over-the-ear headphones that do not apply pressure to your ears (e.g. hold their position via the headband only) or with big enough earcups to enclose your whole ears (i.e. pressure applies directly to your skull instead of over your ears), then it may be a potentially comfortable product.

Anyone has similar issue and found any good over-the-ear headphones?

I actually have the frames sitting above the earpieces. Doesn't impact vision at all and is far more comfortable.

  • Glasses + Sennheiser 598s = no issues.

  • The description "open headphones" is a vague term, some barely cover the ear whilst pressing painfully against the ear. I prefer large oval shaped earcups with memory foam + leatherette, can wear these types of headphones for hours with no problems.

I'd recommend would be the Bose QC25/35s - really lightweight, generously large earcups. Sennheisers above are also really good if you're looking for open ears.

If you're looking for a good gaming headset, i'd recommend Hyperx clouds, they're identical in comfort to the Bose QCs - incredibly comfortable (can wear them for hours) + they're a rebrand of actual studio headphones so they're okay for music.

Open means the speaker is exposed to air from the outside of the headphone which has implications for sound (particularly bass) and how annoying they are to people close by (very).

There is actually a term for what your describing but I forget it. The term to describe headphones that do not touch the ear at all is circumaural.

  • Maybe you're thinking of on-ear headphones? Those push on the ear, examples being the Bowers and Wilkins P5 whereas all over-ear headphones were designed with the intention of completely enveloping the ear, the Bowers and Wilkins p7 for instance. Depending on budget, have a look at the Oppo PM3 which are ~$400 if you look hard enough. Beyerdynamics also has a range of really comfy headphones with huge earcups, be sure to bend the headband of your headphones outwards to reduce clamp force on your ears/head, that might even be enough to fix you current headphones?

  • I wear glasses, and have Bose QC15's. No problems at all.
