  • Usually $99 from MSY, but at it's original price of $99 I instead picked the TP-Link AV1200 Gigabit Passthrough starter kit instead for $109 delivered from Futu_online. Testing them using the TPLink utility, they seem to be talking to each other at 100mbps (when connected in a two-storey home).

But this is a pretty good price for a AV1000 kit, although it lacks pass-thru, its small enough that it won't block adjacent power sockets. Usually for $67 bucks you can only get AV500 ones (eg TL-PA411KIT).

  • Any idea how the data travel out of the house?

  • Will these be any effective when used in a house with over 35+ yrs old electical cabling ?

    • I am not sure the age of the copper is that important, one thing to keep in mind is where you're going from and to maybe on different circuits, if they're on the same circuit this will not work. But see my note below about this D Link model.

    • You most likely will experience degraded performance. The extent would only be known by testing.

  • I had D Link model and since upgraded to TP Link Gigabit pass through (http://www.tp-link.com.au/products/details/cat-18_TL-PA8010P…)

In my opinion this particular D Link model is unreliable, I needed to reboot (repower) the device every week to 2 weeks. It froze regularly and drove me bananas. The TP link gigabit model has so far (3 months) not needed a single repower.

    • Thank you. I will look into this.

  • I went to the TP Link 1200 model a few months ago, maybe only had one disconnection.

    Had alot before…

  • I've got a couple of these and they work well for me, I have also had to 'reboot' them on occasion, but only once or twice over the last year or so.

Contrary to what I previous poster has mentioned, they can block adjacent sockets dependent on the shape of the plug. :(

As someone else has stated, you need to make sure the two sockets are on the same circuit. Easiest way to do this is plug a lamp into each then switch off / unplug your fuses one at a time, if the lamps go off at the same time you should be good to go.

Cheapest I've seen up till now is Kogan at $92 delivered, but they are currently out of stock.

At this price I am definitely buying another pair!

fyi powerline adapters can still work on different circuits if not blocked by RCDs or safety switches. eg separated by fuses, and not on different power phases.

      • Fair enough, I'm no sparky. You lost me at RCD :)

Will 1000 gigabits stream YouTube ok? ;)

Buyer beware this AV2 model is only SISO mode, which is not much faster than AV500, espesially when nosie increasing. When considering with many other factors, better to buy the MIMO one like the TPLink 1200 model, except you have tested and satisfied with AV500. From what I knows, most of the users in Sydney get very limited speed/range from AV500 devices.

  • I have an Asus router upstairs. Unfortunately the wireless signal in the downstairs bedroom is weak. We want to use an iPad downstairs.

To get a good signal, I'm thinking I could use one of these to send information downstairs. But then I need a wireless signal for the iPad to work. So I needed to plug in something downstairs to generate a wireless signal. Would appreciate any suggestions on what to use for this.
