How to Add PS4 External Storage

Good morning fellow Ozbargainers,

I purchased a 500gb PS4 for my partner when it came out, however due to the massive game sizes and downloads, the 500gb has dwindled away. For his birthday I would like to upgrade it to 2+ TB (boring but we go for more practical 'gift' giving in our home) and I am not a very savvy with techy lingo. Is there a way to add on extra storage , while keeping the original drive that is in there? Could you point me to what i need to purchase that you have found reliable and reasonably priced - was hoping i could get something while the Ebay deal is still up. And also, if i would need to install the HD in some way to the PS4?

You will have to copy the data from the original HDD I believe…. This solution allows to use desktop 3.5" HDD which are cheaper for 2TB than some 2.5" 2TB's available and possibly faster speeds…

Edit: https://www.mightyape.com.au/product/nyko-ps4-data-bank-plus… This 'plus' version apparently allows you to use the old HDD too? Dunno how it operates tho…. :)

    • Ahhh i've bought the Nyko ps4 charger from there over a year ago and I saw the data bank was around $40 then, but seems like thats discontinued :(

If i have to copy over the original files… i might have to go 2TB + as spending over a hundred for just double space seems less worth it.

do you think the 4TB from this one would fit? I just dont want to buy the wrong one or something :)

https://www.mightyape.com.au/product/nyko-ps4-data-bank-plus… this one allows the use of the original and a 3.5 hdd aswell. The plus version replaced the older one so it shouldn't be discontinued…

Here's the description on the site:

"The Data Bank Plus allows the use of a 3.5'' hard drive in addition to the stock 2.5'' hard drive that comes pre-installed on the system. This is a new feature for the Data Bank Plus and allows the stock hard drive to still be used as storage. Switching between the two hard drives is simple and is done by the press of a button while the console is powered off. Typically, 3.5" hard drives have a higher read/write speed than 2.5" hard drives, which may slightly improve load times in some games and are available at higher capacities for a lower cost."

As for HDD Size it says: "*With the 3.50 firmware update for PS4 we recommend up to 4TB for models below CUH-1200 and for models above CUH-1200, we recommend up to 8TB." so dunno if that answers anything…

        • oooh that does sound good. bit worried to preorder incase there might be a problem which they ll fix at a later date, ill have a look at the tutorials after work and see which option would be the safest + most cost effective. thanks for your suggestion :)

    • oh wait, i do have a few desktop HD's around the house I could probably clear one and use that instead! Is it portables that are 2.5" and desktops 3.5" or does that just vary with each product?

2.5" are portables, ssd's and laptops….3.5" are the the big hdd's usually found in desktops and externals with power supplies

With the PS4, you'll need to pull out the existing HDD and replace it with a larger one. People often use the Seagate 1TB or 2TB Portable HDDs to do this, but there are many others you can choose.
As mentioned above, you'll have to back up the data onto a USB then proceed.

There are many tutorials online, here's one: http://www.techradar.com/how-to/gaming/how-to-upgrade-your-p…

    Good luck!

  • This is a pretty bulletproof option, if only 1TB

      offtopic…. I wonder how HDD's fair against a bullet….say a 9mm….

      • I always assumed that's why the 2.5" drives were measured in 7mm or 9.5mm sizes… so you know which bullets they are effective against.

        • now you are just boasting….. :P

      • Just search YouTube. Heaps of American gun nuts shooting up all sorts of tech.

        • Yee haw! cowboy or Yippee ki-yay!!!! Ma 2nd amendment right to defend against the robot overlords!!??!!!

        • @jonathonsunshine: She's a abacus??!!?? Look I know she is old and outdated but…… :P

    • Aaah, it looks like i would need to transfer the existing HD files into the new one, so i would probly look at 2TB and above. Wanted to buy 'the last of us' digital version that time and it was 50GB already :(

Depending where all your games came from you can probs just swap out the hdd and reinstall from disk. When they say transfer all your files, I think you have to do it to a third hdd. That can be a 3.5 though. Ps4 hdd to intermediary hdd, swap in the new hdd to ps4, then transfer from intermediary to the new one. Or you can just get new hdd and install all the games from disc again and let it do updates and patches over night.

Like others said, just Google it, it's pretty easy and won't void your warranty.
