I'll wait for a day, then visit their dumpsters.

    • They'll still sell them as they are "Best before"…

      • Don't know about other states, but definitely not in NSW.

        • Fair enough! It happens regularly in qld :(

I was curious, so just found this for NSW.

          http://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/fp/understanding-labels/…

Foods can be legally sold after a 'best before' date as long as they are not damaged, deteriorated or perished.

Still think that Dan's should state it on their website as the reason for the discount though.

I watched a documentary the other day called Just Eat It and it is amazing of the waste that goes on when something passes its use by, best before etc date.

Criminal in fact to see the amount of waste because of date or even worse something not meeting the right appearance.

MOA is gross even when not best before.

  • Why would you drink a Pale Ale that's probably 6 months old?

    • +1

      Why not?

      • Fresh is best. As soon as beer leaves the brewery, it's flavour begins to change. Light and heat speed up the process. Some beers last a little longer than others (dark beers and bottle-conditioned beers keep for a while) but Pale Ales and IPAs are only at their best for a short period of time. This beer won't kill you but at best it will taste bland or a little off, at worst it will be skunked.

        • Eventually, it becomes Vegemite.

don't buy pretty much out of date beer. it's not worth it.

  • Bought it for $24 a pack and it's a decent drop. Not my favourite pale but at this price it's fine!

  • This isn't my favourite Moa. It didn't taste fresh enough in the first place never mind after its our of date.

  • I think its great.
    Bought 3 cartons. Thanks OP

  • The original reason for IPA was that it had to remain drinkable after the long sea voyage to India, hence the extra hops.

Beer should have a best after date to discourage drinking it too soon.

Bought a case on the way to work this arvo. Should be nicely chilled by the time I get home.

because the hops acted like a preservative so they didn't die from drinking it, not because they wanted it to taste better after the voyage.

IPA is best drunk straight from the tank. There are a few beers which age well (some of the belgian styles, and sours) but generally any beer that is relying on the hops for flavour are better drunk as soon as possible.

      • I guess we shall agree to differ.

I find most, if not all (batch brewed) beers taste better after ageing. The amount of ageing varies and, as you imply, the hops do fulfil a dual purpose (flavour and preservative), as does the alcohol.

I have been happily drinking the Moa pale, thoroughly enjoying it and the bottles can be reused for my next batch of home brew so a double bargain.

Agree, well know fact that hop aroma and flavour diminishes rather quickly. Opposite for malt driven beers, longer the better (within reason)
