  • Hmm what am I missing - as a non phone tech enthusiast who has a sony xperia z3 - how would this compare? on paper the 3gb RAM is akin to the xperia z3, however my 16gb internal storage is bugging me. Not to mention this runs android 6.0?

My only questions are on paper are all the specs miles above the xperia z3 - which is appears to be? Or would the quality and things liek the camera lens be trumped by sony given their quality in producing camera lens?

Last but not least 4850 maH battery is way larger than sony's. I can't see the screen size, but being a phablet i'm assuming it comes up well above 5.5" and so although comparably larger battery life, would this drain alot faster than the sony?

More importantly how safe is buying chinese brand phones these days if they are android OS based in terms of being preloaded with nasties or any potential vulnerabilities due to the whole 'from china' thing? Is that just an overblown paranoia thing? I've never rooted or jailbroken a phone before so wiping something would be unlikely - I would be using the software out of the box.

edit: can anyone comment on the bands? i'd be using amaysim network (optus) essentially.

    • actually I looked up the phone and it's 6.44 inch screen, given xperia z3 is 5.2" and the samsung note 3 which i've picked up at the borderline of a decent large size phone (to enable better browsing/functionality in terms of screen real estate) is 5.7" this phone must be frigging huge at 6.44"!!

Might not be for me, although there are various other xiami phone deals I notice in the last couple of days. Not sure if anyone has a recommendation. I think heading to the 6" that oppo does and below (but still larger than the xperia z3) would allow decent screen space for better emails, browsing and consumption, however is there any xiaomi phones that would come with the larger battery in that screen size and these sort of high specs?

      • I'll recommend the Redmi Note 3 Pro. Go for the Special/Global/International/Taiwanese version which has the B28 band

      • +1

The phone is great if you consume content more than make phone calls. No B28? Makes no difference to me as 4G where I work is more than fast enough and my home is in a 3G only area. Is it big? Yes. If I talk for half an hour does does my arm start to get a bit numb due to the size and weight of the phone? Yes, but I honestly don't mind. The battery means I don't have to worry about the battery going flat anytime soon and did I mention the screen size? :) Also, it's still small enough to fit into my work pockets without any difficulty.

        • I hate holding a phone to my ear for long periods anyway. If I'm going to be on the phone longer than 3mins than I'll plug in a headset. I'm a big fan of the phablet + BT headset combo.

        • @macrocephalic: yup got a meizu just for that reason.

      • I don't buy any phone larger than 5" or it would make it too hard to try fit into the pocket.

    • Battery won't drain faster as has more to do with the 1080p resolution. The battery in Redmi Note 3 is a beast too. You'll be fine and I'd say you'd see better battery life even.

As for the nasties, if you buy a global variant you will be ok. this is cos Xiaomi flash the ROM with a whole bunch of languages apart from English plus Google Play preonstalled. The shrink wrap should still be on the phone box when you get it.

Where problems arise is when someone doesn't buy a global variant and the seller has decided to open up the box and put their own ROM on it claiming that they've added Google play etc. If you want to go down this avenue, sure you can add Google play yourself, but tell them seller to NOT touch the box and phone at all.

      • It's best to reflash the phone with a genuine Xiaomi rom as soon as you get it.

        • +1

Mine came unopened and was the genuine ROM haha

        • @adrianhughes1998: Even if it looks that way, I'd still flash it. It's pretty easy to shrink wrap a box. Plus you'll be sure to have the latest version.

        • +1

@macrocephalic: I suppose. I checked all of that on their forums that it was latest edition, did virus scans on PC and on phone itself. Just as careful as you are haha.

  • it's a big screen and would definitely make data consumption fun but too big to fit into pockets unless you wear pleated pants. Downsides are the supported bands on 4G as it doesn't have 28 (700mhz) which i enjoy in my area, and the 2nd sim uses the memory slot so can't have dual sim and extra memory. also not sure if the 2nd sim does 3/4g or not as 2 G is getting turned off soon. in regards to bloatware, if it has an international rom it will be clean. the chinese apps we regard as spyware are actually populat apps in china, eg china uses wechat and westerners use whatsapp, we use ebay china uses taibo, they also have their version of facebook.
Future os support ….. with chinese phones they tend to bring out new models to go with the new os so not sure when it will see android 7, still waiting for android 6 for my redmi note 2 which they promised and are now quiet about, so that phone will be going to ebay.

    • 2nd sim has 3/4G so it's still working if Telstra and Optus turns off 2G networks.
I have the phone and it's fantastic.

  • +2

Phone looks great, might try to find it at a retailer I can rely on to actually deliver though.

  • This is my ideal phone. However I fear that as soon as I purchase it Xiaomi will come out with a B28 Taiwanese version, then I'll regret I didn't wait a little longer.

  • Hmmm, tempted to retire my Note 3 Pro into my partner's bag, and I might upgrade (or is it a sidegrade?) into this.

    Tempting tempting…

/nah, will wait for the inevitable v2 of this.

    • It's a sidegrade. Ideal if you like a big screen.
Big screen is very good imo. this will still fit into most pockets.. You get used to it very quickly. I used to have a Sony Xperia Ultra.

    • +1

I was actually turned off by the build quality after seeing the review from Android Authority. At the 50s mark it shows that the screen actually detaches from the frame when flexed and this being a big phone surely will tend to flex when in your pocket.

      • It is bendable as Tech Tablets did the same in his review. Then again specs can't be beat for the price

        • Ah, I didn't see Tech Tablets' review on it. And yeah the specs and price are no doubt a bargain, just that unless a large screen is a must, the Redmi Note 3 Pro seems like the better choice especially the B28 version.

        • @nanoronline: yeah I have the Redmi Note 3 too and I love it. If they had a band28 version of the Mi Max I would have bought that instead in all honesty.

        • @nanoronline: what shits me though is that the other variants of the Redmi Note 3 have all received MIUI 8 update and the band 28 version hasnt yet.

        • @adrianhughes1998: You're not missing out on much. It's just a fresh coat of paint with some minor fixes. We're all holding out for the Marshmallow release.

        • @flaminglemon: already have Marshmallow.on this one. Would be nice to get speed improvements that's all

        • @adrianhughes1998: Ah. You've got the Special Edition. I'm totally jealous. :( I don't see why the rest of us can't have Marshmallow. The hardware is essentially the same.

        • @flaminglemon: I agree mate. I could understand Mediatek version having a delay but not the same hardware here. Xiaomi have been shit at doing OS upgrades though for most of their fleet.

But they are pretty good at doing the MIUI updates even for years old phones.

      • Funnily enough, in between posting and then editing my OP I found a review that mentioned this exact build quality issue, and that was enough to halt the temptations.

  • +1

Ordered, wife needs a new phone and would love a screen this size as she is mostly texting and reading on it anyway. Cheers OP

  • Banggood is selling one for $265. Any thoughts?

    http://www.banggood.com/Xiaomi-Mi-Max-6_44-inch-3GB-RAM-32GB…

    • That's a good price, normally I use bang good I opted for gearbest this time because of the DHL shipping and insurance options. It also stated it was the international version. Cash rewards If Gearbest doesn't work I'm bang good for life. Currently phone is in warehouse packed but not shipped for 2 days and I paid extra for DHL. Doubt it will get to me in 5-9 business days as claimed.

  • Update, Gearbest were actually quite helpful in moving the order along. It was stuck in Hong Kong for a while and the explanation given was that a 3rd party was the source of the delay. My fears were allayed when I realised the 3rd party supplies the Australian power adapter. Which was packed separately to the sealed phone package and loose in the postage satchel which was fine.

Im actually pleased Gearbest moved quickly. DHL were incredible and I actually received my phone today 31st October. Exactly 14 days from Hong Kong.
    So far so good :)

    • 2nd update Also this passed the Antutu check and came with the official ROM. It also updated over the air with the updater app to MIUI 8 with no flashing required.
