Thought this was a decent price. I've just gotten a DSLR and wanted to try out a new lens without breaking the bank - reviews say it's good for the price.

  • I've got a MFT to Nikon G speedbooster. Would this act as a 'G' lens? (I know the AF wouldn't work in any case)

  • For full frame?

    • From my research it should work fine with full frame cameras.

      • Thank. Do you know if this has image stabilization?

        • Nope they don't

listed product details is APO version. the one good guys sell is NON APO version.

the red ring in front of the lenses differentiate the APO vs non APO version…

      • Yup you are right for some reason thought was APO
        No image stabilisation for both
So it even worse than what I thought :p

For $120 you would not expect a top range lens and if it gets damaged I will not cry too much. The Canon equivalent is about $600.

I have a couple of expensive-ish Canon lens and a couple of cheapies. The better lenses show their value in marginal conditions, but for 90% of what I take you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. My $150 50mm Canon takes great photos in low light conditions and often comes up better than the more expensive lens in natural light.

Sure if you are blowing up to a great percentage or need speed in low light at the extreme of the lens, the cheap ones will show their flaws, but I am not printing posters.

If someone wants to know whether they have any use for a longer lens, this would be a good one to experiment with before hitting the credit card. It is not a good all-round lens (not wide enough) but I wouldn't rule it out for someone starting out.

@Public21: the 50/1.8 is a simple fixed prime, so of course it's going to be sharper when compared to other zooms. Doesn't really apply to this.

This one will fit full frame cameras (DG is forn FF while DC is for cropped). The APO version has a extra layer of coating at the front element compared to this.

Good price. As DCXpert is selling it for $180.

For zoom, either buy cheap (like this lens), or buy expensive (canon l/Nikon g/ tamron/sigma eqv). If someone asks whether this is a "good" lens and what's the "difference" compared to the premium stuff, this lens will likely satisfy tha person's need.

No point wasting money buying "mid range" lenses that's neither here or there.

  • At those apertures and lengths, this is only good for outdoor shooting during daytime?

    • Yes, but who is using a slow 70-300 at night? If you're shooting long exposures on a tripod at night the speed isn't an issue anyway.

A word of warning to those considering this lens, i have it and use it time to time with my Nikon D7100, the focus for general is painfully slow and the focus hunting for macro is even worse. As a first lens in learning Macro its great, BUT you get what you pay for. And the focus motor in this lens is loud and i do mean LOUD.

Hope this helps give some general feedback to this considering :)

    • How's the image quality?

  • wondering how do you guys manage to get $119.20? i dont see any local pick up menu ?

    • +1

The Nikon version is still showing that you can pick it up. No luck with the Canon one - managed to get it yesterday fine.

Weird, maybe they're almost out of stock…
