Woolworths, ALDI and Telstra Mobile

Hi guys,
I was going to get a new iphone 7, but given the ridiculous price increases on contracts and the real lack of innovation over my 6 plus, I think I'll stick with what I have. I've always been with Telstra, as it is the only carrier that provides me with reception at my beach house, but I saw that both Aldi and Woolworths use the same network. Does this mean they use the exact same frequencies as the regular Telstra network, or do I lose some of the lower frequencies (and potentially lose connection at my beach house). Are 4G speeds the same? (Im happy with anything 30mbps or over). I'm currently averaging about $130 a month, but a lot of that is extra data. Im thinking of swapping to an 8gb woolworths mobile plan, as they seem to be cheaper than Aldi. (And I should be able to lower my spend to about $50 a month). Would I regret moving to the resellers? Do I lose anything that I can't see?

  • I can't tell any difference and am pretty sure anywhere with 4g is 30mbps+

  • +1

Slightly reduced coverage in outback areas and speed limited to 100mbps

    • how come those say "Carrier Vodafone"

      • Yeah, saw that, no idea. The second Sim is VF but the data is off.

  • They don't have the coverage of the full network, they apparently match the network coverage to their competitors. That said, I am with Telechoice (who are a Telstra MVNO) because neither Optus nor Vodafone have enough coverage at my house to make calls consistently.

Boost have access to all the towers AFAIK - as they're a fully owned subsidiary.

  • I don't remember so all of this could be wrong (someone did tell me once) but Telstra has 2 kinda of types of coverage, there is the normal one on telstra which is like 98.5 percent of the population or something similar in terms of range.

There is also the 98.9 percent of range which I /think/ was on the 850mhz frequency (at one stage they were calling it next G? Or way back CDMA).

As far as I know, Telstra always resells the 98.5 percent one which covers mostly everywhere except for specific rural areas.

Only Telstra and Boost has the full telstra coverage (I think Boost is owned by Telstra?) so if you want their full coverage you will need to go on either one of them.

Definitely a coverage map would help here through, there is lots of what I said that I'm unsure of so you may want to check online to see if I'm not talking bull lol.

But unless you travel through rural areas often, I have a feeling you probably won't notice much of a difference (someone plz correct me if wrong).

Not sure if its worth it, but would be great to get a friend to come up to your place to check their coverage with the plan they're on. Having bad coverage in the place you live is the worse.

  • For aldimobile, could just spend $5 for a sim and test it out.
