Telstra $40 Mx BYO Plan - 7GB Data (5GB +2GB Bonus) + $1000 worth of Standard National Phone Calls (New Services Only)

230

Telstra has increased the data allowance for the Mx plan from 5GB to 7GB.

Same as previous Mx deals - 12 month contract, online exclusive.

From live chat it seems the bonus data expires once 12 month contract is up.

Good for those requiring Telstra coverage.

  • If you're out of contract you can also sign up. Swapped one of my numbers over a couple of weeks ago.

    • If you're out of contract it can be worth jumping in the 24x7 chat and talking to disconnections to see if you can get anything better than what's on offer.

Did that not long ago and got the $70 plan for $50 a month with bonus data (to 13GB) to match what Voda was offering at the time. Also included another free years of Apple Music and caters to the fact I like the Telstra network. 12 month arrangement.

On Whirlpool there's a bunch of people in a Telstra Post Paid thread that have negotiated at various price points for deals that surpass advertised offers while talking to disconnections.

Free NRL is all I care about :-)

  • comes with Apple Music ;)?

Keep in mind that bar the little extras Telstra throw in, Boost's $40 prepaid option still gives you 5gb plus 1gb bonus each weekend, unlimited calls, unlimited sms etc, and that doesn't require a contract at all and is still on the full Telstra network. If you set auto recharge up, it recharges every month on the same date extending the period of the credit.

This doesn't seem like that great value in comparison tbh! I can appreciate some may love the allure of discounted movie tickets, and Apple music however 🙈

      Except:

Telstra Min cost $480 for 12 months.
Boost Min cost $520 for 12 months (Up to 28 day expiry or next recharge - so minimum of 13 payments in a year)

Also, auto-recharge on the same date is useless given that this is a 28 day renewal. (ie Up to 28 day expiry or next recharge)

Hi, I think you have misunderstood my post.

If you set it to auto recharge, Boost have confirmed that it extends the expiry period to the entire monthly period. So if it's 31 days in a month, and you have it set to recharge on the 1st, it will go the whole 31 days etc from 1st, to 1st.

Thus the Boost minimum cost is 480 with auto recharge, or 520 without auto recharge.

The 28 day expiry is a minimum and so only applies if you don't have auto-recharge.

        • Actually I wasn't aware about the 28days being extended to a month for auto-recharge.
          Will look into that.
          Cheers!

        • @Tiggrrrrr:

          No problem.

It was discussed recently on their Facebook page somewhere. I couldn't find a link. However I put my parents on to it when the 28 day thing started and there has been no issue! I did confirm it with Boost in private chat though

        • Hmmm thanks for the auto recharge info, been with Boost for 4 years and somehow missed that point.

        • No problem.

It only happened when they swapped to the 28 day thing, and they only admitted it once I gave them the biggest blasting on Facebook.
Ideally, they don't want people to know about it as it's in their interest.

Managed to get this plus 2GB extra (9GB total) plus $100 welcome credit via live chat with a recontract. Don't be afraid to push!

Thanks, got both my wife and I on the same plan.

  • People need to jump on live chat, because I did the same and I pushed and pushed, this deal from face value and non-negotiation sounds nice, but I went on live chat and managed to renew for a 12 month BYO for $45 a month and I have 13gb of data.

    • I guess you have leverage when you are an existing customer but not so much for new customers?

      • Yeah, that's pretty much the main thing, sorry I should have noted that, you can achieve better plan if you're an existing user.

    • Well done on getting it to $45 a month, lowest I could get was $50 a month for 13gb

From my experience on live chat they seem to only budge if you're a current customer looking to re-contract or just out of contract. For those that are coming from other providers they don't seem to want to budge at all.

I told them I am on optus prepaid but they still offered me 10gb/$50 a month straight away - (discounted $20 from the $70 Mx Plan).

They also confirmed Mx plans still include Apple Music too which would have sold me if I didn't use so much data elsewhere ..and if Optus didnt offer 10gb/$40 already.

I will try again later and report back if I get an improved deal.

      • I just tried to price match an offer coming over from Vodafone, no budge at all. Wouldn't offer me more than what's advertised. I even mentioned ozbargain and whirlpool to no effect

      • Something to consider is Apple Music is unmetered on Telstra now, so if you do use a lot of data elsewhere Apple Music on Telstra might help in that regard since you won't have to budget for streaming.

  • Chances of getting on this with 12 months remaining on my $50 byo plan?

    • Low I assume given you have a year to go and this is a 12 month contract, so Telstra gains little. Worth a go anyway but generally reconstructing that far out involves some cost or signing another 24 month plan. You may get lucky but.

  • Will this work moving from Telstra prepaid?

    • Try live chat but quite possibly. I imagine it's in their interest to lock you into a contract.

    • Yes. I was on prepaid and got this deal.

    • I am not getting any budge at all. At least one of the consultant was a bit more open than the rest of the consultant I chatted with (that doesn't read off the standard scripted customer response). His like getting lots of enquiries (presumably OZBers) and asking for $20 discounts off L plan and feel bummed out. Oh well, doesn't matter worth the shot. At least I still have heaps of starter pack to finish off…

    • Yes it does work. I just switched 10 minutes ago and also got the $10 student discount. So $30 all up.

  • What the key to negotiating with livechat? I'm prepaid looking to contract and can't get them to budge from the advertised offer

  • On Live Chat I ended up with $40/month for 8GB, a $50 one-off credit and 6months of Apple Music. 12 month commitment.

I just finished a 24month iP6 contract and had already received 12months of Apple Music previously.

    • Yep same here 8 gig $40.00 per month $1000 of calls unlimted sms/mms 12 month contract total $480 with 6 mths Apple Music Actually the $50 byo plan
      less discount

    • Yeah I've had two consecutive 12 month memberships now. On the $70 plan (paying $50 with some other adjustments)

  • I think we will give them a call this week. My son signed up for the old deal with 5GB 2 weeks ago but it took till Thursday this week to get the phone service connected…over 6hours spent on the phone and in store with them to get sorted. We had planned on phoning this week and saying they could credit us for all the issues and a 180km round trip to their store to finally get sorted, but pushing for this would be a better deal for him. Fingers crossed!

  • They matched the 10gb of data optus were doing for $40 for me on chat. Wouln't give me apple music though lol. But i am happy with 10gb.

  • Live chat is telling me that with MX you cannot keep or port your existing Telstra prepaid number.

They're offering me the M plan discounted to $40 / month for 5 GB but not good enough, IMO

    • Seems they were talking rubbish (more keen to push the M plans rather than MX?)

During MX order process I could enter my current Telstra number with no issues.

    • Try again with another rep. I just switched from Tel prepaid and got a $10 student discount.

  • Has anyone managed to change to an MX plan while keeping their existing Telstra number?

    • Yes, from Telstra prepaid. And got a $10 student discount (didn't even ask for the card through live chat). So I'm assuming they have room to move.

  • If you buy $30 telstra starter packs you get 6.5gb per month with no lock in contract on PP+ plan.
You get 3gb of data on activation (1.5gb day + 1.5gb night)
Then you use your $30 credit to buy more data plus packs (1gb for $10 or 2.5gb for $20)
The only downside is you get 7 days to use each data plus pack you purchase and you'll have to port out in each month to continue.
A good alternative if you can bothered to do this or if you can get the starter packs at a discount.

  • Sorry to dig up an old thread, I managed to re-contract to the $40/7gb option through live chat, however checking my account this morning it's monitoring my usage as 5gb. Has anyone with the 7gb option noticed this? Is the 2gb bonus added on to the end of month or have Telstra just stuffed this up?

    Cheers

    • me too, just finish talking, and even talk to supervisor and no offering better than that. anyone can get success deal? need update plz.

      • Just got off with live chat(disconnections), enquired about recontracting to this deal despite not being a new service. Instead they offered me the $50 M plan with an 3GB bonus and $10 off. Works out to be $40 a month for 8GB.

        • just did one too, $50 with 12 GB data, which is discounted from $70 L plan and extra 2GB data.
