Device to track heart rate when sleeping

Hello,

I am looking for something (on sale, preferrably :) ) that can help me monitor my heart rate when I sleep.
Looks like a fitbit type of a wrist band is the way to go.

I have never worn a wrist band. It appears the tightness of the band can effect the results it reports ?
What have people used to measure heart rate at night ? Any pros and cons of any devices ? What do you recommend ?

Cheers,

  • Out of the blue but why do you need to track your heart rate when you sleep ?

Got a sleep study done and do not believe the heart rate reported in the study. So want to track it myself. Cheers.

So you don't believe the study presumably run by professional people using professional equipment and instead you want to prove them wrong using wildly innaccurate devices made by nerds who don't give a shit about little things like "accuracy" because why would you when your selling non-medical devices to gullible idiots?

        • I believe the study - just not the interpretation of it. The GP has one version, the sleep specialist has another and a respiratory specialist another. Also, HRMs are barely more than a basic apparatus. Nevertheless thanks for contributing to this thread.

Fitbit sleep tracking is somewhat limited (essentially tells you when you've slept and not much else), but heart rate tracking is relatively good while sleeping. Tightness of the band affects the optical heart rate sensors like in the fitbit, but much moreso if you are moving or are outside. Sleeping or at rest should be accurate enough. I had a charge hr which I wore relatively loose

Something like the Jawbone has a contact heartrate sensor, so is more accurate but really only for outdoor and exercises activities.

Fitbits are a good option as they have continuous heart rate monitoring if that's your primary concern, new charge 2 would do the job well I think. I have a samsung gear fit 2 (my fitbit charge hr fell apart after 18 months) which is a better user experience from a band point of view but only takes your heartrate at regular intervals. Jawbone UP3 is a good option, and a bit more discrete than other bands, but is getting on a bit and doesn't have a screen (although the app is very good, my partner has one of these).

Don't have experience with any others, garmin vivosmart is pretty similar to the fitbit and worth a look too.

    • Sweet. Thanks for your response. I see the charge 2 and UP3 are probably what am after. Both of these are fairly pricey at $260 and $180. Would you know if any of these ever go on a sale/deal ? Any other cheap options that you may know of ? I think I just want to monitor my heart rate for a few nights so I get a baseline. Can one rent these things ?

        Up3 is $106 here.

Or as someone suggested below the mi band 2 seems to have posted deals regularly on here, or chest strap to pair to your phone. Might be worth lookinginto that if you're only after a small outlay.

Heart rate monitoring is something activity trackers do, but if you're not using it for anything other than this at night then for you its probably not worth getting one

You can get a HRM that you strap around your chest and they transmit to your phone either via bluetooth or ANT+
    something like this

Take a look at the Mi Band 2.

    • Thanks mate. Bought it.

      • No worries. I hope you got it from one of the recent sales here on OzB!

  • All the chest HRM I've used work better when the strap is wet. Will they work dry all night?

    • I have never had to intentionally wet it for mine to work. I wear it at home on the way to the gym and it detects it and record it.

I have never had to wear it throughout the night though
