    Vodka is Russian for water.

    • +5

Actually voda is Russian for water.
However I agree that vodka is quite close to voda.

      • voda is Russian for water.

        Vodka liking I will be

      • +2

        Вода

        ;)

      • The just k turns the word into a diminutive, so vodka still means water. Or literally "little water".

  • Is this any good? Not sure if I trust their site reviews.

    • +8

Had it 2 or 3 times before, really like it. Nice and smooth, goes down easy

    • +2

If you like Russian Vodka, this is one of the better ones. Not quite as good as the Gold version but still good.

    • +3

Depending what you want, not usually as good as a 40% one, this being 38%, but better than the 37%'ers!

      • +7

I used to drink 40% one straight off the bottle back home in my motherland, all vodkas go well if they are chilled…$5-$6 or $50-60….
Actually one mix for USSR nostalgia followers.
Take a glass of beer - take as much as you can in one sip.
Then the polar bear comes - top up the glass with vodka.
Then take as much as you can in one sip again - so the polar bear goes away.
Then top up the glass with beer again.
Continue your conversations with that young eastern european lady.
        Спасибо

          We called it ЧПОК

    • Yeah, I wonder how it compares to Absolut, which is priced at about $5 more. Still, my favourite of them all is Ciroc.

    • +1

Despite the typical cash in, Vodka is not Whiskey and not meant to be fancy. Standard is a basic many Russians drink it brand of Vodka. Cant be all bad.

    • +2

Silver medal at the 2015 San Francisco Spirit Awards (along with Pinnacle, Skyy, Smirnoff - all more expensive).

Russian Standard Gold was awarded a Double Gold, but much more expensive.

Finlandia awarded Gold in 2016 and on $32.90, so that would also be a goer!

Every time there is a vodka deal I point to this review:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/wine/5770943/10-vodk…

Basically nobody can tell the difference between vodkas, including the experts. So buy the cheapest.

On the plus side this vodka rated well, but not as well as the one that was half the price.

    • What a shame we can't get Glen's Vodka here in Aus, I would have liked to try it.

    • +31

There is a definitely a difference between Vodkas.

      • +11

        Especially the morning after!

      • +1

Agree with RtN. Tried a $12 bottle of vodka with mates a few years back… Safe to say we haven't had it again since and hopefully will never have it again.

      • +5

No doubt, but the problem is the experts can't reliably tell the difference between a cheap vodka and an expensive one. Some cheap ones taste very good and some expensive ones taste awful. This applies across all wines and spirits, there is not a clear correlation between price and quality. A whole industry had been constructed around convincing people that there is, and a whole bunch of suckers fall for it. Tell them which is the most expensive and they will tell you which is the best, don't tell them and watch them squirm. It's so enjoyable to watch.

        • +1

I can definitely taste the difference between JW Red and Black though

        • so is there a chance id like black even if i couldn't finish a bottle of red

        • +3

Look at what is required to make it and you know how much is hype …..at least whisky needs barrels and ageing ……vodka ……One of the easiest and cheapest spirits to make.

        • +1

          @Icecold5000:
and Black vs Double Black 😁

        • +5

@Icecold5000: Whisky is different. It actually has a flavour.

        • @TripleCheesePizza:

Yes, the quality from red to black is quite substantial. I'm getting into bourbons like Makers mark which are a cut above Jim Beam (which I would never drink) so its worth having a look at JW black to see if tastes better to you.

        • +1

@Icecold5000: Then look for Dickel, the black label is easier to drink than the more expensive cream label. Dans has both, about $50 a bottle. Both are good though, if you like that Christmas pudding, chocolate and citrus flavour in Bourbons. A bit Wild Turkey, but much nicer. Its still in 750ml too so its bottled OS.

    • +1

I guess this is mostly true but I've had some really terrible Vodkas that aren't drinkable. Not as bad as a bad rum but still bad.

On a side note, Tag Maple Vodka. There's a vodka you can definitely tell the difference with. Tasty as and it's cheap at Dan Murphys.

      • TAG No.5 Frosted Maple Vodka 700mL $29.90 is 35%.
Russian Standard St Petersburg Vodka 700mL $31.00 is 38%.

        • +1

Tag 5 is good. I tried the maple and another of the maple (plain) both I rated as good vodkas. Worthy of the $25 I paid at a BWS some time ago

        • +1

@albanyson: I like the tag maple and the tag honey and ginger. The tag vodka on its in own was very average for me..

    • Interesting article. Surprised the grey goose scored so poorly

      • +2

Most of the cost in Grey Goose is in the marketing, not in the flavour :)

      • Only habibs and bogans at the Ivy (Sydney) drink that stuff.

    • I have tried various vodkas and would say there are differences, but most vodkas are "good enough" even at the lower end of the price spectrum. For example, I think Red Square vodka (made in UK) is lacking in flavour, while Russian Standard, Stolichnya, Wyborowa, Luksusowa, etc have a wonderful 'bready' flavour.

In terms of hangovers, every vodka maker tries hard to exclude fusel alcohols out of their final product, uses multiple distillations, filters through carbon, etc. People's perceptions of which vodka will give you a hangover and which won't are heavily influenced by the price tag alone.

      • I am quite partial to Finlandia and find it very sweet. However I tend to drink vodka straight with no ice.

        • really like the Finlandia

      • Could argue that Vodka isn't supposed to have flavour. Just highly distilled and filtered ethanol+pure water.

        • Technically vodka is not meant to have flavour, but skilled distillers will add just enough tails to give it character.

If vodka was just pure water and ethanol it would be rather dull, and a hilarious joke on people who buy premium vodka. Hint: pure ethanol costs under $1 per litre to make. Add spring water to dilute and you're looking at well under $1.10 per litre. The rest is tax, marketing hype, and packing, in that order.

    • +4

      do not buy the cheapest.
      you will regret it.

    • +1

I do not agree - you can taste the difference between a reasonably-priced vodka and the cheapest. Cheapest tastes like metho, even when mixed. Disgusting.

It's crappy that a lot of vodkas have dropped their alcohol content - at 37.5-38% it will freeze (if you like freezer vodka, which I do).
Absolut is supposed to be 40%, but it freezes.

A good, reasonably-priced 40% abv is Zytnia Extra, a Polish vodka. And one of the few potato-based vodkas you can still find fairly easily is Luksusowa.
Stolichnaya is also still 40%. I've also found Wisent Bison for ~$35, but not often.

      • Agreed. Stick to the Polish Vodka's. They know how to make it properly. And there is such a huge variety. 10x better than that Stoli and Smirnoff / Finlandia crap.
A nice wisniowka (cherry) or meidos (honey) vodka is superb.

      • You should probably check the temperature of your freezer. I've never had absolut freeze on me across 4 different freezers.
Of course if your freezer is getting down to well below -18°C then it can freeze even premium vodka. Everything has a limit.

    • +1

It doesn't say nobody can tell the difference.
It just says some cheap vodkas can be quite good.
Doesn't mean every cheap vodka is good.
Doesn't mean every expensive vodka is shit.

And while in Europe, the price difference between a cheap one might be 5€ vs 30 €, here it's rather $25 vs $40.

Considering the vodka in question was rated #2 in this article and it's on the lower end of the vodka price range in Australia, it's still a good deal.
Unless you manage to score some cheap Scottish Glenn for $25 somewhere down here.

  • How does this compare to Stolichnaya?

    • +2

Well for us when the Standard came out in Australia, it took over Stolichnaya and literally became the standard.
It is the better Vodka but not by very much.

      • Peace Duke drinks Stolichnaya at the peace door ball Gov.Nuke party

        • +2

Are you off your head on this Vodka? I do not understand.

    • Bought this and 6 x 1L cocobella coconut water.

      • or 2 of these for even cheaper per bottle :)

  • How does this compare to Zubrovka Bison Vodka?

    • It won't.

  • I haven't had heaps of vodka brands, but this is better than Smirnoff Red and better than other cheapo ones I've had.

  • -2

I dont like this, skyy and finlandia is much better for a couple dollars more imo.

    • +2

      Is that you Pauline Hanson?

neg all you like, i drink like 3 bottles a week. Have tried nearly all of it. Just some educated advice : )

  • pure vodka taste like poison ImHo. It's okay when mixed with lemonade and what-not though.

    • Try indian tonic water rather than lemonade.

  • +1

Best bang for your buck by far. Good neat, Good mixed. Winning all round.

  • This could be the last of the imported vodka we'll get if Hilary is elected.

    • +1

      eh?

    • Dan Murphy's stocks vodkas from Australia, USA, Italy, Russia, Netherlands, Poland, UK, Sweden, Finland, Vietnam, Canada, New Zealand, just to name a few. Not sure how Hillary is going to block the imports.

      • I think he means she will start a war
