ADSL2 Modem Router Recommendations

Hi Ozbargainers,

I'm looking for a ADSL2 modem router for my house. My current modem router is a $20 D-Link N300 model that doesn't quite cut the mustard. Briefly:
* Getting quite a lot of interference (15+ other SSIDs) on 2.4 GHz, dunno about 5GHz
* Internet speed is around 14MBit/s as reported by the modem,
* Modem is at the far corner of the house,
* Walls appear to interfering with Wi-Fi,
* Very few AC devices,
* 10-15 devices using Wi-Fi,
* NBN might be coming (according to the 3-year plan FWIW, planning hasn't started in the actual rollout map though)? Stated technology is HFC,
* Not willing to switch to cable at this time.

Willing to pay around $200.

Any suggestions?

    D7000 will suit your need and budget.USe CTech20 to get it cheaper

    I could say its wifi coverage at least 2x stronger than my old Billion NX7000 (not too sure about the model no.)

    I use the Netgear R7000. Its only a router. but you should be able to use with your existing modem. you could get it with modem as well but its more expensive.
    Also if you are using all 10-15 devices at the same time the 14mbps internet connection could be the bottleneck.
    2.4 GHz has more range than 5GHz.

    • +1 for the R7000. Bought one last year and it's been nothing short of amazing.

      • R7000 doesn't have a modem.

        You can (should be able to) put your current router modem into bridge modem where it will act just as a modem and pass everything to a router such as R7000. Another device is the ASUS AC68U which is more or less identical in hardware specs and also highly regarded.

        There are versions of these routers with slightly different model numbers that also have an onboard modem meaning it can act as one unit.

        However with 10 to 15 devices using the router it'd be better to consider higher performance (more cpu and more expensive tri-band wifi) routers - or since you are getting into the same price range now even low end Ubiquity enterprise equipment although only consider this latter option if you are somewhat competent with setting things up.

      • Did you guys physically wire the ISP modem router to your netgear r7000 or are they connected wirelessly in wireless bridge mode?

  • Had to go through a similar decision recently.
    WP forums recommended using the existing modem but pairing it with an Asus RT-AC68U ($190 with the CTEC20 sale)
    Have had this set up for a week and can't believe the difference it made

      Being somewhat New here I am amazed at when people ask for info, people still think it acceptable to respond with as little info helpful as possible by mentioning just a brand of something instead of the model which will be beneficial to the OP in resolving their query!

      I think this forum should institute a sin bin………

          I dont mean to be rude, but shit, it does not take much to offer some informative advice, if you have it…..

  • Asus DSL-AC68.

  • Dlink 2890AL. Had it for 18 months and works well covering 2 storey house. Reliable

    Have had Netgear(1), Billion (2), Viper(1) and Fritzbox (3) previously which are not a patch on the Dlink 2890AL

    If it is on the opposite side of the house, there could be an issue caused by the construction of the house too… an older house with solid/brick internal walls will eat most WiFi signals. Also rf from a microwave or other electronics in the house can play havoc. Depending on how your house is wired you might be able to look at ethernet over power.
    If that isn't an option, something as simple as a range extender which can be plug and play and work quite well.
    On a tangent I've got cable and previously had adsl 2+ so do have a spare modem or 2 (netgear n600) depending on your location I might be able to loan for a test

    • I am in the inner east suburbs of Melbourne, but I've already ordered the R7000 anyways so it's all good.

      • That's actually funny, I'm outer eastern Melbourne burbs. If it doesn't work, I have a spare netgear range extender and also a ethernet over power adapter as well sitting in a drawer. I ended up running cat5 cable round the house to solve the issues I was having.
