What Is Margarine Paper for?

Can someone please explain what the waxy paper on top of margarine is for? I don't know why it's there. Google doesn't seem to know either.

It doesn't seal the product, so it can't be to protect it from germs. Come to think about it, most tubs arnt even airtight. That seems strange for a good product in this day and age.

Please enlighten me

It keeps the surface from drying out, and the product from sticking to the lid.

    • Agreed, I'd imagine it stops a crust forming as well.

I think it's merely an artifice to make you associate it with the waxed paper covering butter, so you think it's just like butter, and not coloured hydrogenated oil.

It's a substitute for butter paper. :) But what the first poster said. Also it's not always there.

    I can't believe it's not butter paper!

  • You wipe your bottom with it to get your body used to whats about to come out……..

What is margarine for? I thought it was rated among the worst inventions of last century.

  • Duh…It's for licking the excess Nutella out of !!!

  • If it wasn't there the top layer would turn a funky colour and people would complain/return it. You can see this for yourself if u leave a chunk of butter out exposed for a while.

The Margarine Paper is for spreading the news.

    • Oil the news that's fit to spread? Or should that be spread to fit?

      • Spread to fat

  • I don't know but I like peeling it off when I open a new tub.
