  • I got $200 credit for sticking with Origin for Gas and Electricty with much better rates than Momentum

    • did you just bluff and say you were going to change?

      • No, I actually did change to AGL, and the call me back with a better offer so I cancelled the transfer…

        • def gonna try.. been thinking about changing from Red Energy anyway. Thanks

          @Da dpG:

Call Red Energy, tell them you've seen better offer elsewhere, and ask them what is the BEST rate they can give you…

I got 42% off electricity for 1 year, and 26% off gas for one year and $200 credit…

    • What rates are you on with Origin?

Percentage means nothing, need to compare real rates

        • @TheMasterChief:

Yep, their rates are on their websites and I did the comparisons based on my usage…

Nobody else came close, especially with the $200 credit as a bonus…

        • Thank the lord for people like you. Percentage does mean nothing. But it's a nice marketing shortcut.

With electricity, the geographic distributor that you are under will factor into your rates, so direct comparison between you and a mate may not be be possible (although it may give you a ball park). For instance, my extended family have a holiday house that's unused 90% of the time. My mum uses very little power. However due to the distributor - the power bill at our holiday house is actually higher (yes when we're not there) than at my Mum's place where she lives day to day).

just grab your last year usage stats, put them in a spreadsheet, and compare how much you would have paid under all the current 'deals'.

I found that with the Origin discounts they were giving me, nobody came even close after I factored in the $200 rebate…

        • Yes, that may well be true. My point is more about comparisons between two people who quote numbers at each other.

Personally I have heard Sumo Power are good. I'm sticking with Powershop though.

It gives an idea on the % discounts that are available. Obviously you need to do your own actual comparisons…

        • Is it for NSW or VIC?

        • @ddhh:

          VIC

Just be wary that some providers provide less clean energy than others, I've had traditionally yellow lamps turn red because they didn't properly filter the electricity before delivering it. Buyer beware

Isn't all electricity received to your premises from the same source regardless of the retailer you chose. I guess unless you signed up for one who brings a diesel generator around to power you up.

There is generation, supply and retailing. Momentum is part of Snowy Hydro (the generator), so they do produce cleaner energy which can be bought on the market by the retailers to satisfy their customer needs.

But as other posters note, all the electricity coming down our power lines is the same - it's just where its created from that is different.

I did a LOT of research and Momentum came out on top pricewise. Of course everyone's requirements is different. They 'recently' jacked up their gas prices which was my biggest selling point but not enough for me to make moving worthwhile. As above, published rates is one thing but if you call and put the squeeze on your provider you will typically get a better price. I did that with Momentum for an additional discount on my power.
Note: Their online interface is pretty basic but ok for intended purposes.

  • Considered them, but agl came out cheaper.

  • Im with dodo duno if it is worth changing.

    • in my area they were only marginally cheaper than dodo. So probably not worth the hassle.

      • Powershop started out good, then when the rates change I got shafted.

  • powershop is better with $75 credit and no contract, referral for them in wiki.
