[MAC] OverSight - Know When Someone Tries Using Your Webcam/Mic - Free

Moved to Forum: Original Link

FBI Director James Comey recently warned that we should all place tape over our webcams. ‘OverSight’ takes a different approach. Instead of requiring you cover your webcam, it’ll notify you anytime someone attempts to access it, or your computer’s microphone.

This app for Mac will notify you if someone is using your webcam or microphone.

    whats the normal price?
isnt there an LED on all macs that shows the camera is is on?

    • OverSight is released today for the first time;

The malware might access Mac cameras without LED and on a microphone, there is no LED at all..

        Malware might disable this app..

          Malware might disable this app..

This might be Malware or it might be suspectable to Malware modifications. Maybe the FBI said that and is actually releasing software to make their job easier? Maybe we should all be less paranoid and exercise common sense?

I prefer tin foil over tape anyway, seems to keep them away….

I personally feel that if anything is going to incriminate you, it's your computer's microphone being tapped, not the webcam:

    • No light on the microphone to indicate recording, and I have not heard of any evidence that people can disable the hardware light on webcams (possibly a government backdoor could do it with input directly from the hardware manafacturers, but still, no evidence)
    • Recording and streaming from the microphone could be done at a minuscule, unnoticeable bit-rate with next to no CPU overhead, where as streaming and recording video to an external server requires far more CPU and bandwidth
    • Voice recognition software vs image recognition software that would be used to automate sifting through collected data are at far different levels
    • Webcams often suck, and require good lighting/good recording environments. True that microphones prefer quiet environments, but unsure if that matters that much

I personally feel that if anything is going to incriminate you, it's your computer's microphone being tapped, not the webcam:

Not just the PC microphone. You have microphones in cameras, phones, mobile phones, speakers, products like Google home/Amazon echo etc, smart TVs, intercoms that work through apps, alarm systems, cars and so forth….

  • Not quite sure what the point of more software would be if these hackers can get in without triggering the hardware light

    • The hackers are probably doing generic malware and would not be customizing it for the OverSight. So it is just extra level of protection, if OverSight is to trust.
OverSight is a popup notification, not Led light ;)

      • My point is that some hackers are good enough to get around a hardware notification which is deeper in the workings than any application (especially 3rd party on a Mac). Look up ring3 vs ring0 and also remember that Mac OS tries to keep programs confined as much as possible
