Maximising Credit Card Points Earnings

Ok, I will admit I am a serial points hoarder, Have been doing it since I first got a credit card,

What tips (no matter how trivial or time consuming ) do you guys have have to maximise points. Lets include some legal but possibly "dodgy" ones too :)

here are mine
- Have an Amex card that has higher rewards than your visa or Mastercard but never pay extra to use it
- have the visa or mastercard that gives you the highest rates
- Put absolutely everything on credit card if possible eg rent, shopping, groceries, bills
- when going out with friends, put the entire food bill on your card and receive cash from them
- ask any relatives or friends who pay stuff on cash if they have any expensive bills to put it on your card and get cash
- if your friend/family is buying a car or furniture, either put the whole amount or even the deposit on your card if the merchant allows it
- if you are receving a refund for anything, try and buy it on card and receive it back on cash (some merchants dont care or dont check). I have my savings account linked to my credit card so present my card, and use savings for refunds if they allow
- if work requires you to buy anything , pay it on card, receive cash
- enrol in to flybuys/woolworths programs that gives you points on top of your purhcase via credit card
- take advantage of credit card sign up bonus points

anyone else got any good ones?

  • Do you send your points to an airline loyalty program?

Qantas Epiqure has good deals on wines sometimes with QFF points ranging from 5-10k.

    • I dont do any flying for work and only use cheap carriers so I dont get any status so I ve been with Qantas Program, Im not sure if virgin or krisflyer or another one is better… but im happy to change if It worked out beter?

how much do you have to spend to get a 10k Qantas point, that would be great

  • I also prefer Virgin points with ebay purchases than 1% cash back.

  • We pay full price daycare on our card and use child care rebate (50%) to help pay it back.

    • years ago i paid for soemthing on finance, but they required a $6k deposit ,
so I gave my credit card, and when finance came through, they sent me a cheque for $6k,

      Was pleasantly surprised!

  • Out of interest, have you been able to use your points at all? Or just building up hundreds of thousands?

yes, did 2 x business class return trips AUS - Europe - USA - AUS
      one next year too :)

      • Very nice!

Upgrades from economy or outright business redemptions?
        Which airline?
Do you have frequent flyer status?

Sorry for all the questions. I had hundreds of thousands of points up until a few months ago. I was building them up over about 2 years but found it hard to find international business/first class qantas redemptions. I don't think booking economy with points is worth it due to the taxes.
I booked return business to Perth (only domestic that is worth it I think).
Then I also upgraded from economy to business on a LAX-Melbourne flight. So good! But the only reason was because my mate is platinum- first in line for upgrade requests

          my personal opinion,

apparently upgrades are the best value for money, but its like winning the lottery if you can get one

so I did outright business class redemption, did USA return
I have absolutely no status so I booked about 3 months in advance and it was the last avaiaible seat.

i havent tried booking upgrades before because if I cant do it, I cant simply refund my economy ticket, so im just going by what others tell me,

Id recomend you do round the world or one world network, I also wouldnt use anything local,

I still have enough points for one more business class return flight, I could save a bit more and do first class, but thats a long way away

        • @hellohello123: thanks for the tips! Did you earn points to Qantas and book through them? (ie didn't transfer points to another one world airline etc)

I earnt the points all thorugh credit card purchasing and it was linked to qantas FF program,
I booked through qantas and just did a return flight as I had some to go for 2 weeks, apparently I could have done it far better by visting other countries but I had to go to usa and back shortly
