Is this an eBay scammer?

I've just sold an item on eBay today for around $150 plus $13 shipping. The buyer has paid through PayPal already.

Looking at their account they joined eBay today so they have no feedback. Their eBay user name is rerebvi.xuuky5o which seems odd. They have provided a PO Box shipping address in Blackwood, SA. Lot's of worrying factors!

There is an email address provided with the person's [email protected]. I've just emailed that address asking for an address for courier delivery (instead of the PO Box).

This seems awfully fishy to me. Should I just cancel the order? Can I do that?

  • From all the signs you noted, looks like a scam. Not sure why did you deal with him even though you were aware that it may be a scam.

They just purchased the item from my Buy It Now listing. I haven't sent it yet.

Will be interesting if they respond to my email. I don't think they could access it as the domain is rams.com.au not gmail or similar. The name they have used is the partner of a bank manager so I can always email him.

I just got badly scammed selling an item with untracked shipping. I think scammers look for $100+ items with cheap untracked shipping then claim it never arrived. Sellers have less than no rights at all.

Get this, they said the item was lost after eight business days of buying. You cannot know something is lost International airmail after that time.. Selling is so difficult as tracked shipping would have gone from $12 to $28 and then you get hammered for expensive shipping ratings.

They launched the formal ebay claim after 11 business days. That is ridiculous. ebay is the opposite of caveat emptor. 100% of the risk is carried by the seller.

The seller listed the item as bin. The item has now been sold and paid for. Do the right thing and stop wasting the buyer's time. Pack the item and ship it. Buy extra cover if needed and keep the lodgement receipt for six months.

They only bought it this afternoon so I'm not delaying anything…just doing due diligence based on several really suspect factors.

Agree. I created a similar thread to this a few months back, worrying about selling to new ebayers. Have now sold many times to people who register only on day of purchase. Never had a problem. I'd just post with tracking. Nothing to worry about I think.

What would not be fishy? A ten year old member id and 1000 fb? They could just as easy be a scammer.

Should I just cancel the order? Can I do that?

    Only you can answer that.

Why worry about things that hasn't happen yet or out of your control? Perhaps Gumtree would be a better marketplace to sell you widgets from now on.

It's less likely that someone with a solid positive feedback history will be a scammer than someone who joined eBay ten minutes before buying an item, has a nonsense username and a PO Box.

Why worry? Well I don't want the hassle of having a PayPal claim made against me for 'non-delivery' and having the money pulled from my PayPal account when there are signs that indicate that the person is probably not legit.

Can I assume that selling on ebay is a new thing for you, or that you haven't listened many items before?

We have two stores and had once upon a time five top seller id. Member id name, id age or fb counts isn't an indicator for who is or isn't a scammer. We found that scammers came in many different names and fb counts. Those that we thought were scammers turned out to be good customers.

This is why you keep the lodgement receipt. This is your seller protection against inr. The extra cover is your seller protection against snad.

Did your listing state that you won't ship to a po box?

  • If you are truly worried, contact them saying you have damaged the item when preparing to pack it and will therefore issue a refund.

Hi the member ID maybe just a guest account which eBay auto generated. If you want seller coverage I don't think you can send to different address than the one already specified by the buyer originally in checkout. You only can confirm. If you do specified no po box then you can ask to cancel and ask the buyer to repurchase with the strret address. If your item can be sent with AusPost Click and Send is better as you have copied of the actual address used in shipment. Don't use prepaid satchels and upgrade to signature required.

    • Thanks I didn't know that…never had a guest buyer before. That explains the random username and the 0 feedback.

  • What's stops buyer claiming item not in parcel even after using tracking and signature?

    • What's stops buyer claiming item not in parcel even after using tracking and signature?

      honesty, perhaps.

    • Absolutely nothing on ebay stops it. The fact that sellers can't even leave negative feedback means they underwrite sales and have to smile and take it. It's far too imbalanced. I would guess that 90% of ebay scams are by buyers due to the current rules.

  • I had someone buy from me with a similar ID to the one you mentioned. I too was worried, but I sent it as an untracked letter and a few days later they left positive feedback. They were a good buyer. Just remember everyone has to start somewhere. If you're that worried, send it with tracking. And get someone to film you packing it and handing it over at the post office.

Did you check money is actually in your PayPal account. Heard a scam when you got a fake paypal email saying money was in account, but upon logging into PayPal account payment is never made

    • +1

Yes I did check that…good tip though thanks

They have given you their work email address, [email protected] is definitely an employee for Rams, I would say given this it would be fine, what scammer is going to identify where they work?

    • Yes that's what I was thinking…and they have written back from that email now with a street address so all good.

make sure you ship to the po box.

  • Thanks all for your comments…really appreciate the OzBargain community!

The new member/random username is likely a guest account.

They have responded from the rams email so that checks out.

I'll be sending the item off today.

    Cheers!
