Whats The Best Way for Me to Swap My Email Accounts

Hey Ozb's

I am currently on Bigpond and using the @bigpond.com email address. I am wanting to switch to another ISP although I can not seem to find an easy way to swap everything over other than contacting hundreds of sites/companies and asking to be swapped over to say.. a gmail account.

If I change from bigpond I assume that my email address will also have to change and I wont be able to keep any of my previous archived emails.

Cheers for the help.

This is why you should not use an email account provided by an ISP, it ties you to them. After you have set up you new mailbox, there is no other way except to notify everybody who you want to keep in touch with.

  • You may be able to ask Bigpond to keep it active for a little while. Or even just pay for that single email hosting. I haven't done this for years though, so not sure of their process these days?

To keep your old emails, sign up with Gmail (or whoever you prefer), and set up both accounts in Mozilla Thunderbird via IMAP. Then you can just click and drag all of your messages across. Might take a few hours depending how many emails/attachments you have.

Gmail has a background import faculty, which also saves on having data go down and up again.

      • Oh, even better. Do that then!

It took me quite some time to convince my parents to transition off their Optus email. I created a free gmail for them and asked them to use the new one in Outlook for all new emails and replies.

  • You can still keep the bigpond address even if you change ISP.

    • You can?
I was under the impression it was deactivated if you switch.

Free for 12 months, long enough to change all your contacts over to your new email.

  • https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/extras/telstra-mail may be of assistance to you.

Currently this is offered for free to customers with existing Consumer Broadband accounts.
This is also available to customers that are cancelling their accounts, but wish to retain their email address.
This is free for the first 12 months, then a standard cost of $79 renewal fee (per mailbox, per year)

Contact the team on 13 22 00 for assistance with this.

$79 a year for something you can otherwise get for free really isn't worth it.

huh. what a load of bull from them. their bigpond email page was the worst, things would take forever to load and couldnt even do a basic search properly.

when i cancelled my service with them , after 9 months i tried to get the credit back, and they said they couldnt do that until i completely closed the account and they would terminate their email service. which i said was fine as i dont even use it. I would ask the progress for it week after week and i kept getting the same answer of 'we are letting you use the email service for free but you cannot get the credit back unless this is closed'. three times i said, close it and give me back my money.

in the end i had to threaten, if they did not direct debit the credit back into my bank account (they wanted to send me a cheque, which they did to an old address that I havent been at for a year), i would take it to the ombudsman. That got them to wake up and get their crap together.

$79 for their email service is a joke.

  • My prepaid mobile sims are activated under my bigpond email address. I guess as long as you consume a service at Telstra, it's going to remain available?

BTW, here's an email backup solution you might want to try.

  • iiNet charge about $20 a year to keep your email address.

  • Ex Telstra customer here -

I switched to another ISP a couple of years ago and had multiple accounts with Telstra and was told that the email accounts would remain active indefinitely. Recently made a purchase online and found that it had somehow been registered against one of my old @bigpond.com accounts, logged in through the web interface and everything was still there and working.

    • I called up and was told that the email address would be a yearly cost to still have it active.
      Strange, :S

    • i might have been able to keep my bigpond acc indefinitely but they told me my account needed to be fully closed in order for me to get the credit back.

  • Not sure if this is still a thing, but my mum was on a dialup plan for years as it was the cheapest Telstra service that would let her retain her email address, I think it cost her a few dollars a month.

Have to agree with other posters though, dump the ISP address as you'll be beholden to them forever, and they could possibly cancel the service whenever they please.
