$1.49 iOS/Android App: Surge Defender (Was $2.99) for Uber Travellers

Surge Defender helps you find and book an Uber ride at the lowest possible surcharge rate - at any location, any time, anywhere in the world!

Simply choose your location, how far you are willing to walk for the lowest surcharge, and the type of Uber ride you would like to take. Then with a single button click, the surcharge rate is locked in and the final booking confirmation is performed in the Uber app.

Why is this app a must have? The Uber app at peak periods may present a surcharge to entice drivers onto the roads. For example, a ride booked via the Uber app, with a surcharge of 1.7x, may cost you $30. Alternatively, using Surge Defender, you could discover that 20 meters from you, the surcharge is only 1.3x. If you took that rate, your trip would have only costed you $23. That's a saving of $7! The savings are even higher when Surge Defender finds you a surcharge of 1x.

So change the way you book your next ride. Don't overpay. Ride smart. Beat the surge!

How can you be SURE you'd get the "BEST / CHEAPEST" ride?

Paying an unethical developer to mislead, eg, slowly adding
pennies / traveled Km, every week or month… Who'd notice?

'not saying it happens here or elsewhere, but it's possible…

    • +1

Because you can see all around you what the Uber prices will be. So the best/cheapest will be shown.

    • +2

I don't think you understand how Uber works.. This is just a scraping app that will check values around you and then book a ride - Uber will bill you the rest - the app developer can't add any charges as it's all handled by Uber.

In saying that, Uber will be killing off the user's account that is in violation and this app will die.

      • +3

Its not scraping at all. It uses an Uber API they provide and encourage to use. So all the data is live and accurate :)

        • +3

Oh and yes, no 'extra' pennies are added on top of the Uber price. The prices are the same as shown in the Uber app.

      • just a scraping app

What is your problem with computers loading web pages?

    • +1

The booking is actually made through the Uber app. How can the developer add "pennies / traveled Km" and to what? Your comment makes no sense.

    • How can you be SURE you'd get the "BEST / CHEAPEST" ride?

It's fairly transparent. this app shows you where the uber rate is surging and where it isn't in your vicinity. Then you start up the uber app as usual and book an uber but set one of the non-surging locations as your pick up spot, and walk over there.

  • No Android version?

  • Why is this not called Surge Protector?! For serials.

    • Indeed. I thought it was a tower defence game.

    • Given some users have microwaved their iPhones to unlock "special features" do you really want them buying an app that they believe will protect their phones from lightning strikes?

  • Android app still shows 2.99 :(

    • Starts tomorrow :)

      • +1

Then why not wait until the discount is actually live?
Otherwise it simply leaves some of us feeling that this is more about 'promoting' than offering a 'deal'.

        • I set the post's start date for tomorrow…assumed it wouldn't show up until then. Was surprised when comments were already coming through. I'll know that's the way it works in the future.

        • @loudmiceapps: Could you just start it now?

        • @elitistphoenix: Ok just set it now! Could take some time to propagate to all users so check every now and then. That delay in rollout was the reason why I set it for a future date, but enjoy! :)

  • wouldn't the app be meaningless if i needed to leave my exact location at a exact time?

    • Most rides arrive in ~5 minutes. This is plenty of time to walk to the corner or down the road. And Uber bookings can be made anywhere, it doesn't need to be your exact location.

      • yeah i get that. but i mean if i was to get one for myself for where i am for a specific time rather than to inconvenience myself (since the whole basis of uber and the concept of uber is convenience), then whats the point of the assistance of the app? so its only purpose is to tell people what area is surging to what degree?

btw when it surges i just call a taxi. longest wait has been 10 min around Melbourne CBD and Brunsy. heres a trick, call both silver top and black cabs. first come first serve and they don't charge cancelation.

personally i probably wouldn't pay money for this sort of app as its only showing me information that i can see for myself from the uber app, and other than that i think it kind of defeats the purpose on the concept of convenience. others may find it useful though.
        good luck to you.

        • Working on this I noticed that prices change quickly and the difference between locations was often great. So having a way to see that is what this app does. Using the uber app, I never moved the pin around randomly looking for cheaper rates. Some people are happy to pay for that convenience. And yes, some people won't which is fine.

But this app works in another way than just searching nearby. Most people find they get lower rates after waiting a couple mins and letting the app check every 30 seconds for new data, rather than trusting uber will notify you immediately of the lower prices (which I doubt they will).

For specific times, requesting a ride for a specific future time (at a certain surge) is on the roadmap. It requires more infrastructure than just a simple app, eg. server, etc. Unfortunately I'm unable to commit to that unless this gets any traction and usage.

          Cheers for the feedback.

  • App looks great, looking forward to having a look at it. FYI the link to your privacy policy doesn't work, goes to a protected Wordpress address!

    • Thanks! Hmm strange…app store or play store?

      • From the approval stage in the Uber app. (iOS)

        • Updated. Cheers for notification! Hope you save heaps on your rides :)

        • @loudmiceapps: Thanks, no worries. Best of luck with it!
