Google has finally released their phones for this year replacing the Nexus line, Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL.

List of specs http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8345&idPhone2=…

Nothing super special, but it's great that the Pixel XL has a 3450mah battery, usb type C, snapdragon 821, and apparently a great camera; but we'll have to wait for reviews to see if it's that good. Storage options are 32GB or 128GB

Free unlimited cloud storage for photos and videos (including 4k videos) for Pixel owners
Automatic Updates - definitely not a fan, especially since it installs in the background

Received top marks from DXOMark for it's camera.

Pixel (32GB) is $1079
Pixel (128GB) is $1229

Pixel XL (32GB) is $1269
Pixel XL (128GB) is $1419

Just saw on Facebook that Telstra have it exclusively. Pixel 32GB with 10GB data is $99/m.

Just added the same poll as on androidpolice.

i'm pretty sure there will be an option to turn off/limit automatic updates

  • +46

Wow what's with the new pricing!? I love my 6p but definately not worth an upgrade for 1400$.

    Pixel:
    32GB: $1079
    128GB: $1229
    Pixel XL
    32GB: $1269
    128GB: $1419

    • +28

Wow, even if I didn't recently get the S7 Edge, I wouldn't buy it. No at those prices anyway.

      • +2

I was hoping it'd be somewhere in the $7-900 price point. Price it right for the competition, but not high enough to price yourself out of the majority of the market.

        • +3

A $7 phone with those specs would be awesome ;)

        • @Exeter: That it would. Ofc, I meant 700-900 though.

      • After owning a 6P, S7E, and Note 7, i wish I never wasted money on Samsung. I admit it is expensive, but hey so is apple products…. and considering Note 7 is $1400 new anyway….

    • +16

I was waiting months for this phone but I can't afford paying that much! I'm still using my Nexus 5.. Might have to pick up a different phone.

      • +2

i was holding out with my nexus 5 until last month when i got an GS7.
Glad i did, with these prices.

        • +11

Apart from the miserable battery life and mediorce camera the Nexus 5 has been serving me well since release.

Thry should just release a Nexus 5 "SE" with a newer SoC, bigger battery and camera at a low price and call it a day imho.

        • @StrayfireX:
          Isn't that the 5X?

        • +1

          @jason3w:

Don't get me wrong, I think the Nexus 5X is a good phone. Bought two for my mum/sister. However I still use a Nexus 5.

I love the smaller profile of the Nexus 5. It's just small enough for single handed use. No massive bezel. No camera bump.

When I heard the leaks for Pixel 5" all I was hoping for was a device that was similar in size and design to the Nexus 5.

      • +4

I'd suggest the Nexus 5X is a good alternative unless you must have the latest hardware. The 5X still gets prompt Android updates and has a much improved camera than it's Nexus predecessors, not to mention it's much cheaper now.

      • Pickup a Nexus 6P… They've been floating around recently at ~$450-$500.

I still love mine a lot.

        • I just purchased a Galaxy S7 Edge for $746 through the eBay 20% off promo.. so that's just over half the price of the Pixel lol :')

    • +3

Can't wait to see how fast this phone drops in price….

Who is building the phone for Google?

    • +1

It was literally made to compete with the iPhone, so it makes sense that Google would try to price it the same as an iPhone (whether that is right or not)

      • +3

That make some sense but it will make more sense if google price it cheaper than iPhone if they really want to convince the iPhone user converting to Pixel, as well as to prevent other android users converting to iPhone.

        • But if it has simular specs as an iphone and is competing with an iphone why price it lower? if they price it lower they admitting its an inferior product.

        • +2

@suicine94: So anything cheaper than something else in it's category is automatically inferior???

    • +4

Ths pricing is almost identical to Apples IPhone 7/ 7 Plus phones.
      They're dreaming!

    • Google are hoping to compete directly with Apple, whether they do or not, I dunno. But the pricing is exactly the same..
      iP7
      32gb $1079
      128gb $1229
      iP7+
      32gb $1269
      128gb $1419

    • +1

Why the wow? That's exactly how much the equivalent iPhone model costs. Are you suggesting the Pixel is an inferior phone?

      • -3

        Yes

        • +5

Is your sentiment based on fact or fanboism?

        • -3

          @elektron:

          Fact

        • @elektron:
Of course it was fanboism - next time plz don't ask reciprocal questions !

  • Wonder if the telcos will get these on plans?

    Edit.

So i went over to gsmarena and they seem impressive enough. I would like to see the eis in action on the camera but yeah for some reason i like thw sound of it.

Cant wait for gsmarena to do a full review.

    But that price though.

    • +3

      Only Telstra

    • +2

      That chin though….

      • Woah

  • +6

Look its a nice phone but it doesn't turn me on like the LG V20 does… Also the $1400 price tag doesn't justify the cause..

    • +1

I'm starting to seriously consider getting the V20, but still have no idea about the price or release date for that.

      • +1

Pre-orders overseas start end of October however like the v10 I don't think it will be released in Aus. Grey import it is then!

        • Will it support our phone bands than?

        • @Captain Howdy: LG Australia apparently is releasing it in Australia come November. Will wait and see what happens.

    • +3

I think they should have a budget line (nexus) then this.

I dont think people can justify the price.

  • +17

Hahaha Google. I'm not fan of Apple or iPhone but this price from Google is shit. Anyone here going to buy this phone?

    • +20

Of course someone will buy. Some members are rich, but not as crazy as whirlpool members some of them like ceo level rich.

      • +2

Agree. Someone will buy it. But I can't see point in price tag of $1000 on Google phone. You can get similar specs for half the price. And Google phones are not the only one with android…

      • +10

Yeah tell me about it. Everyone on Whirlpool is on $250k+

        • +6

What I should be on whirlpool I'm on $250 a year, wait sorry didn't see the k bit best I stay on ozbargain as I survive on free and cheap stuff now .

        • @mr_asstight - yeah but all their kids are on the Jobs board and Education board talking about how they can't find anything, so that money has to pass down as an inheritance later on! :P

        • +1

Everyone on Whirlpool claims to be on $250k+

          Fixed.

    • +2

And this is why phone plan of 24 month contracts appeal to people.

I cant for the life of my drop anywhere near this price for a phone in one hit. And to make things bad you know when your life is in a mobile is until you realise all you electronic gadgets pale in comparison to costs.

      My laptop less then 500.
      Gaming console less then 400.
      Smartwatch 200.
      …. etc.

      • +1

but you have the cheapest laptop, console, smartwatch…. and comparing it to the most expensive phone…. from the other technology you have you should compare it to a $200 smartphone.

If you wana compare apples to apples it should be

        Laptop $3-4k gaming laptops
Console $1k (ps4 pro with PSVR)
        Smartwatch $600 (apple)

then smartphone of $1.3k is ok.

        • Wouldnt purchase a crapple device thanks.

Then again my laptop was state of the art once and it cost a pretty penny.

These days i couldnt justify the price of some things

      • +1

I cant for the life of my drop anywhere near this price for a phone in one hit.

If it makes you feel any better; and not wanting to come off as bragging in any way; but there are many of us who could easily afford it but would never pay it. I can think of plenty of better ways to invest $1k+ than a smartphone…

You'll find a lot of the guys buying flagship phones are also the same ones whinging about not being able to get into the property market…go figure. ;)

    • This is what people keep saying about the iPhone. It sells. It's because you make it expensive, then it will seem expensive. That is enough that people will pay for it.

Mind you, with my terrible plans I used to spend more than this in 24 months, now i could buy the phone and stay on my current post paid plan and still be under $2k for 2 years. Meanwhile get S7, IP7 or Pixel on a plan now and you pay over $2k for 24 months.

  • +34

Wow that price…. google now become an apple fanboi?

    • +8

Not an apple fanboi, because they got the 3.5mm audio jack!

The price will drop sharply once sales decline.

      • Apple jack.

I think google love the idea that there are millions of stupid people that will buy an apple product no matter what price and what its missing…. just because apple say jump.

        • +2

          @MrMcHairyHead: yeah nah

        • @MrMcHairyHead: I can afford two apples but prefer oranges with root ability

        • -7

@MrMcHairyHead: Android fans are really showing their immaturity and childishness by down voting me for simply saying that some people have good reasons to prefer Apple.

        • -6

@Hotkolbas: Or maybe some people actually use Reachability, Handoff, Continuity, iMessage, a granular permission system for every single app, full phone automatic nightly backups, 3D Touch, iCloud app data sync, Hey Siri, Flyover, Apple Watch, a UI that wasn't designed with the size and information density of a Fisher Price toy, and having a phone that isn't the size of a tablet.

        • @MrMcHairyHead: android fans understand how much of a see you next tuesday steve jobs was. And if that isnt anything to go by you need to look into more closely.

        • +2

@MrMcHairyHead: some people like the way apple ios works and some like the freedom to do it how they want.

I was using ios years ago but now im free.

        • +1

          How high?

  • +1

Was going to say that I'm buying one to replace my 5s. Until I see the price.

    • +3

If you love the size of 5s, you shall get an SE.

    • if you want to replace your 5s you should get a s7

      • +1

Not a fan of Samsung. If i'll go Android, I'll go stock Android :D

  • +1

Have been waiting for this. With this price I guess I will go with Nexus 5X then.

  • +8

Yeah definitely not worth it. No way in hell dies the price justify these specs. Glad this is not in the Nexus line.

  • +1

I just broke my Nexus 6 LCD. Should I upgrade to the 6P or just fix it at ~$250?

    The pricing broke my heart!
JB Hifi have their pricing on their website https://www.jbhifi.com.au/deals/phones/google-pixel/
Telstra has it on a plan https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/mobiles-on-a-plan/g…

    • +4

An upgrade would make more sense… for future-proofing and all. You might wanna consider a One Plus 3.

      • I'm tossing up between the 6P and the One+3

        • +1

The 6P uses the Snapdragon 810 aka firedragon. It might be a great processor but it is already a year old. It also has 3GB of RAM.
There are pros and cons whichever one you decide to go for. The One Plus 3 has the newer 820 processor and 6GB of RAM, a pretty healthy development community. Plus, the bang to buck ratio is quite enticing. I just think buying a newer device makes more sense than buying an older one even if they are priced the same or slightly different.

On a side note, can someone please help me understand how Google can get away with charging such a premium for a 1080p device?

        • @albert0pia: The same way Apple charges a premium for a sub 1080p device (iPhone 7)

        • +2

          @alwaysupforabargain:

Iphone has a much better resale value comparing to Android phones.

          Their service is also better.

System is (arguably) safer and more stable.

        • @victorheaven: True that! I do wonder what the thinking is behind the pricing of the Pixel phones

        • @albert0pia: not sure but I think the 6p handles the heat of the 810 pretty well, it's a huge metal phone after all. I'm thinking of upgrading to it now, I never really was taken by the pixel design and I'm definitely not getting one at these prices!

        • @Alzori: I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there have been reports of Android 7.0 on the 6P giving bad battery life. It might be something to consider before buying.
I personally think the 6P is a great device. I like the screen size and front-firing speakers more than anything else. What I can't live with is less-than-stellar battery life. I don't know what the best and worst case scenarios are regarding longevity but I love my 'flagship' phones to have at least 3500mAh juicers.

When will OEMs get it into their heads that flagship devices need big batteries to match their specs? Sadly, a lot of people seem to vote more with their voices (and/or rants) and not with their wallets. I've already got my eye on the Xiaomi Mi5s Plus.

        • @albert0pia:

As an owner of a Nexus 6P I can say that the battery life is on par with the iPhones which are the other phones in this household.

        • @albert0pia: I'm not having issues with mine. Can have it working all day without additional charging.

        • @albert0pia:

The same way Apple gets away with it. Charge outrageously for what appears to be a premium handset. People will still buy it. Consumerism

    • +39

Good, I can see you just spent over $1500 for your new iPhone 7 recently from Ausluck. same design 3 years in a row. really happy for you that you have made the right choice.

        • +32

It still cost you $1500. lol

        • +26

that's not how math works, you did indeed spent $1500 despite what your mental gymnastics tells you.

        • +1

@georgesc: lol hard on mental gymnastics part

        • +15

Actually you spent around $2k in a year.
You would have purchased the 6S for say 1500.
          You only received 900 back.
          You then purchased a 7 for 1500.
That would mean $2100 outlay in a year. Ouch.

        • @smashed: lol 6S does not cost $1.5k

        • @smashed:

but he's holding on to the 7S right now which has value of 1000 (2nd hand). so he spent $1,100.

        • @justcallmeboss:
I was guessing on the model but if he bought a 1500 model this time then he probably bought a large capacity last time.
A 6s may not cost 1500 now but they would be a similar price to the 7 when they were launched a year ago.
Next year his 1500 iPhone 7 will be worth 900 too. It's called depreciation :)

        • @justcallmeboss: Ye I got mine brand new 64gb for 980 4 months ago

    • +1

only the fan boys will love it

The fan boys are disgusted at the overpricing and aren't interested either.

      Nice one google.
