Australian Post - Postage Price Increase Now Effective (from 3/10/16)

Australia Post has put in effect some price changes that started yesterday (3/10/16). They mainly increased the charges for international mail, express parcels and standard domestic parcels, but have kept stamp prices the same - $1 each (or $0.60 for Concession card holders). Here is the excerpt from the announcement page below:

On 3 October 2016, we'll be adjusting some of our prices. This change will impact:

  • Selected domestic parcel products & services
  • Express Post
  • Selected international letter products & services
  • Domestic & international Mail Redirection and Mail Holding services
  • Unaddressed Mail services

Price changes are never easy for anyone. We want to reassure you that the domestic basic postage rate of $1 (60c for MyPost concession card holders) > will remain the same. As will our discounted seasonal Christmas card rate for domestic and international cards during November/December.

Pricing updates.

From memory, a standard <500g parcel post used to go for $7.45 and after the change is now $7.60. Also, a medium international letter (<250g, rest of world) used to be $7.40 and is now $8. I certainly got a shock when the cashier told me it'll cost me an extra $0.15 to post a standard parcel yesterday.

Sure, the price increases may be small (or absolutely substantial if you're a OzBargainer like me), but this only adds to the growing number of concerns for Australia Post's flow of business - announcing their changes in a creeping manner in order to keep a low profile. I believe this will build up to a big crash of some kind, maybe as notable as the closure of Masters or the like.

What do you guys think?

I'd be happy with price increases if the service was decent. I know your post was more about sending parcels but I pay AusPost to deliver things to me and they simply (and literally) don't deliver.

Twice in the last week they've been hopeless with delivering parcels.

Parcel 1 - Tracked parcel with specific instruction for parcel to be left on premises if house is unattended. Was home that day and waiting for delivery but get a text saying my parcel is awaiting pick up at the local PO. Check tracking and apparently there was an 'unsuccessful delivery attempt due to something about unable to access premises'. There are no fences/stairs/animals/other danger at the front of my home (and doorbell was working), and nothing has stopped other drivers from coming to my door. Checked my mailbox and no card was ever left there.

Parcel 2 - Same scenario but no text, family member was home and checking tracking and saw another 'delivery attempt' and 'awaiting collection'. Checked mailbox for note (nothing) but went to pick up at the local PO showing the tracking. The pick up card was just delivered with the mail later that afternoon.

Both parcels were small and light (Parcel 1 would fit in mailbox, 2 would not), but it just seems I have super dodgy (possibly illiterate?) or lazy posties who seem to think the delivery address is the local PO. It the item was big/bulky/fragile I would understand and not mind, I'd probably even prefer to pick it up myself, but their service most of the time is hopeless.

I've raised many complaints in the past with AusPost and nothing changes.

Whenever I shop now I actively try to use another delivery service if the price difference isn't too big.

  • Is this a scheme to squeeze online shopping and prevent competition for the established retailers? Well I hope my tin foil hat will protect me.

Sendle … cheaper … don't have to leave house. \o/ Screw Au Post \o/ \o/

  • We post heaps of stuff at work, usually around $300-$1000 worth/parcel. AP constantly loses our parcels, or complains the address was incorrect hence they didn't deliver the good. (It wasn't incorrect, they have delivered to the same address twice prior to the incident, we also double checked with Google map before posting). AP apparently doesn't use Google map.

Even though we use express post for our goods (due to the nature of these goods) but they won't even guarantee "next day delivery" for us. When we questioned them they simply said it was "something they strive for".

So ready to move on from AP as soon as there is an alternative!

I recently sent an item to a customer worth $400. It was on the truck that caught on fire on the Hume Hwy. Auspost's response: "Good News, we can offer you $50 compo"

Since that incident, I've been using Sendle a lot more. Quicker postage times and like others said, I don't have to leave the house
