2006 Piccadilly Hills Chardonnay Dozen $150 Per Dozen ($12.50 per bottle) w/Free Freight Save 55% off RRP @ Winedirect.com.au

10

A good aged Chardonnay is tough to come by these days. Those with the patience to get a hold of one in it's infancy are impressive indeed! This Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills has plenty of stonefruit and creaminess with quality French oak and fits the bill of a textural Chardy. Recommend not drinking this one ice cold. If you put it straight from the carton to the fridge for half an hour to forty five minutes, it will be perfect serving temperature. Food pairing screams for a creamy pasta or some seafood.

  • I'm cynical on this deal - are these well made? It seems odd that an ageworthy white would be sold off this cheap.

    • it's probably an ok deal. 2006 was a warm year in that region. It is one of the best areas in oz to grow Chardonnay.

    • you are well within your rights to question it. To be frank, I had to ask the question also. The wines themselves are indeed well made, it is made by the Hartley Family. They made their money elsewhere and don't require the cash flow each year and therefor find themselves selling the wines when they feel it is at its peak. The fruit they source is of great quality and they use quality French Oak, the result, a delightful aged Chardonnay.

      • No worries. Here's a review to vintage 2003, hope this might be useful to someone:

          Yeah, right! 😆

  • Aged chardonnay. Be very careful!

Piccadilly hills is one of the best places in South Australia for chardonnay, but isn't even top 10 in Australia.

    In no particular order:

Tasmania, Yarra, Macedon, Mornington, Margaret River, Great Southern, Gippsland, Geelong, Beechworth, Henty.

    • found a review of the 2003 vintage, I had some recently and found them to be similar. http://huonhooke.com/label/128444#communityReviews=sortBy%3D…

      • Interesting. A very positive recent review. But the style is very dated (South Australia!)

Maybe good if you like the style (old timers and those who like big reds and don't usually drink whites (quite a large demographic!)

        • It's actually quite funny, it's a bit of a boutique crowd that like the complex, buttery Chardonnay's, not to everyone's taste. But when we get one in, there are plenty of people that like it. If you don't like that style of wine, doesn't make it a bad wine. If we all had thee same taste, there would be one variety of wine and we would all drink it

        • @Dboc1987:

          Large demographic = popular!

        • @tightwad:

I know haha. I was merely pointing out the fact that it is one of those things that people don't usually scream out for it, but when it becomes available, it sells like crazy. I have done many tastings with people that weren't very happy with it, largely because they were Pinot Gris or Sauvignon Blanc fans. Different styles for different people.

        • @Dboc1987:

          Barossa shiraz, too.

        • @tightwad:

Oh everyone loves a good Barossa Shiraz!

        • @Dboc1987:

Not me! Unless it doesn't taste like Barossa shiraz 😊

        • @tightwad:

          Let me guess….. Heathcote? haha

  • No more free information 😊

    • haha fair play, was getting a little bit of a Victorian bias based on the quote below :-P

Tasmania, Yarra, Macedon, Mornington, Margaret River, Great Southern, Gippsland, Geelong, Beechworth, Henty.

  • Tasmania? Great Southern? Margaret River? Please name a another Australian cool climate chardonnay regions not in Victoria.

  • Pemberton comes to mind?

    • Pemberton, Great Southern….

      • ah apologies, yes it does
