Type of sunshade/awning to install

Hey guys, so summer is rolling around and time again where my room gets to a billion degrees.
My room faces the afternoon sun and literally gets about 6-7 degrees hotter than anywhere else in my house due to no insulation etc. I already have white out curtains which don't really help. I'm looking to get a shade/awning of some type to stop some of the sun and not sure what to look for.

Thats a pic of it and my room is the one where i dodgily put the car sunshades on to try help.

  • anything to stop the sun hitting the glass

    do you own or rent?

cheap option is shade cloth, can be erected in summer, removed in winter

as already said, the sun can't touch the glass, awnings are fairly permanent and ugly IMO

    move expensive https://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Ffreedo…

  • We own so can do anything and to be fair function is more important than looks at the moment. I think at the moment the sun only ever really hits half of the glass anyway but the heat is coming from the sun hitting the pavement which radiates heat up.
Even after the sun is gone i can feel the heat coming up from it. I hose it down every once in a while but need a better solution. I've used a small thing of shade cloth which didn't really help too much and the wind pushed it alot so i'm thinking a full one which goes to the ground although not too sure if that'll help since it can't cover the whole pavement.

  • what about window tint film?

  • I think a shade sail setup is your best option.
You can get them in a variety of shapes to best fit your needs, more durable than shade cloth, and if installed with adjustable cable tensioners you can take down in Winter. See:

    Or this:

  • You need to stop the sun hitting the wall as well as the glass. I used a roll down shade awning on our old house which helped keep the sun off.

  • I use bamboo outdoor blind thing from bunnings. Very cheap, tree to spot online but can't see it. Hangs by 2 hooks. Does a great job with our house, where the back is way hotter than front due to poor insulation and lots of glass.

    • Is it tied down to anything?

      • Mine is mounted under a shade cloth blind that was there already. So the shade cloth blind holds it in place. The shade cloth material is useless, but bamboo blinds do the job.

  • I'm not sure exactly where the sun goes down but I would put some hooks in the ceiling of outside, either next to the door or in front of it, and hang the bamboo or whatever was being suggested out there. As someone else said - you have to stop the sun hitting the actual wall.

As for your ongoing problem, i'd buy a massive pot and something deciduous to put there.

I'd also paint that white roof area with new white paint

  • I think Reflective window tint film worth a try, cheap easy and may be quick fix too.

    ebay

  • Thanks for the suggestions will try the tint since it's cheap as hell, hopefully it doesn't look too suss. Going to try to find foliage like bamboo which I can also put up too.
Just wondering would I also be getting heat from the roof being hit with the sun? Trying to pinpoint where most of the heat would come from apart from the windows and the pavement.

    Cheers

  • Any idea which type of window tint film is the best. Not sure if the stuff off ebay is going to be great.

  • How did you go clinton?
