Best 5-seater SUV under $22K

Planning to buy a 5 seater SUV and would like the experts suggestion on this forum. My requirement is:

1) Low on maintenance
2) Only taking the car out in the evenings or during weekends
3) Good bootspace
4) On or after 2013 and prefer around 40K kms
5) Petrol
6) Auto

    • Just now updated.. thanks oscargamer

  • You can buy a BRAND NEW Mitsubishi ASX for around that, in auto and loaded

Best its Made In Japan with the strong warranty and quality

    • Best its Made In Japan with the strong warranty and quality

      but it's made by mitsubishi.

    • +1 for ASX

  • Low on maintenance

RAV4 in current shape (i.e. 2013 onwards) to tick this box.

Edit: Look for one with the 2.5 litre 2AR-FE engine in it, far better than the gutless 2.0 litre and horrible CVT. Example here (seller needs to learn how to take photos properly, lol). GXL with more fruit than the GX. Offer 'em a lower figure if it checks out ok.

About $23-24k will get you a VF SV6 Wagon.

Hands down beats any of the SUV recommendations that are about to come your way.

(This coming from someone with 2 kids under 5yo).

I've just gone from a wagon to an SUV and I already want to swap back!!

      I have 3 kids, 8, 5 and 3 and you can't beat a wagon.

  • +1

    Subaru XV

  • VE SV6

VF is not as good IMO

…seats not anywhere near as comfy in VF

    …hate electric parking brake

…seating position offset to right of pedals

    …looks

    …cheaper

    • I have to disagree on VE vs VF

VF - F&R sensors, blind spot monitors, auto-start on auto models (wagons), self-closing tailgate (kinda wank factor, kinda handy), MyLink>IQ

Pretty easy to get used to the electric park brake, especially as it gives you more room in the centre. Plus the VE handbrake, when up, looks hideous (imo)

And I much prefer the suede :)

        we'll agree to disagree :)

all your sensors and monitors don't make a better car, they only make a car with more 'things', that don't make a more enjoyable car…..IMO

        and suede…..really? ;)

        • we'll agree to disagree :)

We'll leave it at that, before you sneaky edited :P

  • Mazda CX3 Maxx is the sweet spot in the range and can find a few in budget.
Otherwise I personally own a VF like spacebar can highly recommend them, go for the SV6 as the 3L feels underpowered in the base evoke.

  • We picked up a 2014 GX RAV 4 for $25K with 30K on the clock. (6 months ago)
The only thing I don't like is the floor in the cargo area.
It has a deeper sides so if you don't fully load it, things slide around and drop into the deeper parts.
Our budget stretched a bit further and looked at new ASX, CX3, HR-V, IX35 and Subaru VX.
    My requirements were (In Order)
    Reliability (Including Maintenance)
4WD (Not necessarily off road capability.)
    Visibility from the driving position.
Driveabilty and comfort for trips over one hour.

  • OP, what did you settle on?
