Is that any ways to avoid moving costs for Telstra Internet ?

Hi there, we signed a two years cable broadband plan half a years ago with Telstra. But finally we bought a house and moving in two months time. We are happy to move Telstra to our new house and wonders oz bargainers have any ideas that we don't not incur any moving charges from Telstra? Thanks

Best thing to do is read the contract that you signed half a year ago. If it specifies a moving charge, nothing is stopping you ufrom calling them and trying to negotiate that fee down. If the charge is significant, you could offer to move to the next plan up on the condition they drop the charge, etc.

If there's no mention of a moving charge, then it's possible that they may class it as a "termination".

    Either way, read your contract.

You'll probably be charged a new connection fee of around $50 to $100.

You could call them and offer to sign a new 24 month contract if they waive the fee.

Recently had to move house and get both Cable & Foxtel moved to the new house - not cheap. It would've come to $350-$450 just for the move.

If you don't need a technition (as in, the house is marked as allowing for a self-install on their system) that will be the cheapest option. (Around $50 - $90)

    If you require a technition I believe it's $190+

The only way around these charges is if an issue occurs due to Telstra's error (has happened both of the times I've moved with them so far. This ends up with them crediting the install + downtime, and in our case, providing in-term mobile broadband data free of charge. This move ended up with 80GB on each of our 4G sticks - doesn't expire until 2018!)

I'd stick to calling their move team as opposed to doing it in-store. (The store rep said I wouldn't get connected before the middle of October, whereas the move team set the date for that same week.)

Lastly, ensure you run the address checker on both MyBroadband & Telstras website to make sure a cable service is offered at the property.

  • I think with the right attitude and approach telstra may help you

I have managed to move between properties when i had cable for free, I have heard some people just move, plug it in at the new place and don't say nothing to the big T, please dont be one of these people as it creates a huge headache for the next poor soul moving in

If it is a like for like installation, try plugging in your cable modem at the other end, if it connects up okay then you're in business, provide a change of address and you might avoid any costs

Provided the cable is working / installed correctly

I don't believe modems are locked to addresses per say as I have used my cable modem out and about (technically not meant to but for testing purposes I find this OK)

    • The service is locked to the mac address of the modem.

      • So usable anywhere
        Cool

I moved house last year and was in the same situation. I'm really cheap so this is what I did.

Step 1: Sign up to the cheapest no contract no install fee Foxtel plan (their technician was even available sooner than Telstra's one).
    Step 2: Cancel Foxtel
Step 3: Plug your Telstra router in
Step 4: When you've finished your house moving tasks, inform Telstra they don't have the right address. Don't even mention you moved house.

Doing it this way means = a much cheaper install plus you get Seinfeld and Spongebob reruns for a month!
Note: Your service isn't linked to a particular address. You can take your Cable Router anywhere there's a Telstra Cable connection and you'll have internet.
