Incorrect Shipping - Can Seller Charge Additional?

Hi

I purchased some goods in a brick & mortar store for delivery. Full payment made, for delivery the next day.

Next day, I got a call saying delivery cost would be more than double the original cost due to an error up on their part and I had to pay the additional.

Just wondering where I stand?

Thanks

i'd say they are covered by errors and omissions, even though the sale is final. i think you have three choices.

    1. get a full refund.

    2. ask them if its worth the bad publicity that they would get by you telling your friends, and get them to absorb the cost.

    3. pay the additional and tell all your friends (and name them on here).

its a pretty silly thing for a bricks and mortar store to do in this day. how much are we talking anyway?

Shipping went from $100 to $300 - not double as I originally thought.

That's also them sharing half the "actual"/cost listed on the website

wow, can i ask what kind of items are you purchasing? is it bulky furniture or heavy items?

generally they should know how much delivery would be.

Are you saying its $600 for delivery?

Some dining chairs and yes it's $600 overall.

@brian88: Are they being delivered from Iceland or something? I've had couches delivered for about $50.

How far are they being transported?

@coin saver: 6 dining chairs for how much? Sounds like they are travelling interstate.

I'd do it for $100 for a couple of suburbs away. Know anyone with a trailer, ute, wagon? You could probably put a couple in a hatchback and make a few trips for less.

pay the additional and tell all your friends (and name them on here).

That's like eating a whole meal in a restaurant and then complaining something was wrong! Makes one look like an idiot.

why make this an issue? just ask them for a full refund. then buy the item from their competitors.

It's more a question out of curiosity than anything

Full refund or original quote - if there was a mistake they should eat the cost.

Stick an advert on Airtasker. Someone will do it for about $50 if the store is local to you.

id actually like to know what the legalities are here too, if you've paid and everyone agreed on the sale, how legally binding is that contract, seems way to open to scams to me that they can at anytime simply say "oh no its more now"

obviously if you went in and threatened them with the legalities they'd just keep the items and say see you in court, 9.9 times out of 10 its not going to be worth it but still it would be interesting to know

  • I'm assuming that the "B&M store" is in the same city as you? $300 delivery seems incredibly exorbitant for some dining chairs?

I would be asking for a refund, although I'm quite curious where it's being delivered to? I know that rates for bulky items for rural areas are quite high.

  • The chairs are going interstate so I understand why the cost ended up being greater than $100. I asked how much postage was and they knew at the time as they quoted me straight away.

They had my delivery address on the invoice and I even confirmed this by asking timeframe before paying..

For the record, I did pay the additional for 'subsidised' shipping costs to get it sent.

    • its irrelevant to your rights but would you have paid for it had you had this price to start with?

i would assume you were under no obligation to pay, and i find it really rude that they even told you to pay knowing they were the ones that stuffed up.

  • What freight company did they use?
