[Makeup] Make Me Pretty for Cheap

Hello ozbargainers,

I'm wondering where you guys/girls buy your makeup stuff-thingies. More specifically, I am looking for the Bobbi Brown range which retails upwards of $80 at DJ. $80! O.O

Cheers,
JJB

p.s:I'm naturally pretty and have no need for makeup. Asking for a friend.

pps: How much do you spend on average on makeup?

I buy them at DJs (sorry, not that helpful, especially since I get staff discount). Big fan of Dior. And yes, Bobbi Brown is pretty expensive. A quick Google says StrawberryNet sell Bobbi Brown? What does she want that's $80+? Not everything in Bobbi Brown is that much …

    Makeup for yourself? Or wiki?

      Neither. For the SIL.

Have you had a look at makeupalley.com? I really like their reviews and they have top picks for cheap prices. Also really good to have a look at people's reviews of super expensive stuff and laugh at how badly they don't work. Eg la mer

Good luck getting any Bobbi Brown stuff for cheaper than DJ's prices. There are some grey imports like Kogan and Strawberry net, but imo the tiny savings is not worth the possibility of getting old stock and waiting for ages.

    use charcoal for eyeliner.

How much do you wear? I buy mineral makeup because my skin is sensitive, and other than mascara and eyeliner I would spend less than $100 a year on it. Powder, eyeshadow, blush etc lasts more than a year.
Maybe another $60 on eyeliner and mascara. That's really not alot of money?
Good Mineral makeup is not cheap, but for me it's worth it.

What brand do you use? I assume you use mineral powder foundation?

      • Wiki uses covergirl outlast 3-in-1 in shade 857 for when she wants more coverage. Otherwise she uses the l'oreal bb powder in medium on top of her daily face cream. Not sure if mineral or not :/

Not cheaper but maybe more value?

I go for the DJ Bobbi Brown counter make up "lessons" (more like the girl recommends colours and does your make up for you) when there is a special occasion. Lasts 45min each, costs $95-120 and fully redeemable on their products. Usually get about 2 products with a small top up payment.

    • This is a good idea. A lot of the makeup counters at DJs like Dior have these sort of offers. Best to call up your nearest counter that sells that brand (e.g. DJs Parramatta don't sell Bobbi Brown) and book an appointment ahead of time so that there's someone for you.

Does she have to use Bobbi Brown cosmetics? I find their colour range quite limited and they don't really have a lot of foundation colours. I used to buy all these premium brands but never really made any effort to compare the quality with cheaper options and consider how the products actually worked for me. I would buy an eye shadow just because it's Chanel and came in a pretty little compact and never really use it, then two years later, I find it buried at the bottom in my bottomless makeup bag, still pretty full and I have to bin it then. After I got married and had my son, I started the culling process.

Now I use Revlon Colorstay foundation in Buff and it is THE BEST foundation I've ever used. It works better than Bobbi Brown, MAC, Estee Lauder, and anything you name. I wait for Chemist Warehouse to have a 50% off Revlon sale and buy a bottle then. I don't buy multiple bottles and keep a stash either, they will go off before you open it. I buy different powders every now and then depending on if there is a sale or not, but my staple one if I run out and need one quick is the MAC Mineralize. Same goes with blush, I use Paul and Joe but if there is a sale and I can test the blush and I like it, then I might get a different brand. I always use Stila Lip and Cheek Stain for my lip colour. I keep an Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer in gold, and that's my daily eyeshadow. I only ever keep one other compact with a couple of shades in it for special occasions. If I buy a new compact, it's either because the previous one finished, or it is time to replace it for hygiene reasons.

I don't buy much from Strawberrynet any more as their product quality can be unpredictable. Mecca recently did a price overhaul for a lot of their products to match overseas pricing, so that might be a good start. Still not as cheap, but a lot better than before. Sephora also has a big range and reasonable prices. Other than that, you can try BeautyBay for brands you still can't obtain locally. In generally I only use a foundation for special occasions, my everyday coverage is just a BB cream. I use Kate Mineral BB Gel Cream. Since this is a Japanese product, eBay is your friend.

The bottom line is, you need to find the product you're really happy with, and use it until it finishes. Don't get lured into all the ads about new spring trends, autumn trends and winter trends. I love makeup and I believe that wearing the right makeup to accentuate your looks also shows respect to the people that you're meeting, but it should never be something for you to hide behind and turn yourself into someone you're not. Embrace who you are and pay attention to what truly works for you, not because of a particular brand or some marketing ads on TV.

+1 to MAC Mineralize (I use MAC Mineralize Skinfinish)

      • Yeah that's the one. I just use the normal one, Light Medium. The limited edition Mineralize Skinfinish can be weird sometimes with the extra shimmer and all.

    • Thanks for the detailed response .Much appreciated :-) She has golden-toned skin and has yet to find a more affordable foundation that is both yellow based and dark enough for her skin.

      • Has she been to Priceline where they might have those foundation computer thingys where it can tell which foundation best suits your skin?

        • She has. The ones they've suggested don't suit her once she tried them on.

I think a lot of brands don't do yellow bases well at all. Bobbi Brown is actually one of the better ones but the price for a jar of foundation from them is quite outrageous really. MAC does yellow really well too, so I'd recommend your friend try one of their shades, something in the NC range. If your friend has quite even and smooth skin tone, then I would suggest get a really sheer foundation or just go with a tinted moisturiser or BB cream. Your skin will thank you and it looks so much more natural as well.

        • She uses mac nc42 in winter but it's a bit too light for her to use in summer. Nc44 looks orangey on her. She uses the shade 'honey' in Bobbi Brown for most of the year.

          @Jar Jar Binks:
What about this website? http://www.matchmymakeup.com/ I just found it on Google, seems to show you matching shades from a whole heap of other brands.

Bourjois is pretty yellow, they don't go very dark go may she may fit into their darkest shade.

        • Thanks.
