VicRoads Fraudulent Registration on Vehicle

Hi everyone,

Please note I have had many people say to me "I told you so……you should have known better…..blah, blah…". And I have been beating myself up about my situation quite sufficiently and do not require further/additional ridicule. I'm finally getting my life back on track and would appreciate constructive advice only. Thx

Having trouble with VicRoads who have allowed registration of a vehicle in my name. I haven't resided in Victoria for over 12 months and my vic licence was surrendered/cancelled when I obtained a licence in another state. I also do not (did not) have any vehicles registered in Victoria for the past 6 months.

Recently I received several fines from CityLink (and continue to do so) for a vehicle I do not own or have personally registered with them. That's how I discovered that a vehicle had been fraudulently registered in my name. I emailed VicRoads (as advised after discussing the discovery with them) that such has occurred and requested an investigation be conducted and for the vehicle to be removed from my name.

When I followed up with VicRoads I was advised that I now have to send a Stat Dec stating that I do not own such vehicle. I don't mind that but am concerned the fraudster will not be held accountable for their actions. Any suggestions as how to proceed from here?

Background info - the above vehicle I believe was one that was owned by my abusive/violent ex. I kindly (stupidly) registered such vehicle of his in my name whilst with him. When I fled Victoria from abuse, he took the vehicle but would not de-register it nor could I remove it from my name. Neither VicRoads nor VIC Police could help me.

After many long months of trying to fix this as well as many, many CityLink, parking, speeding, unregistered vehicle fines, etc the vehicle ran out of registration and the police eventually removed the plates. Hooray.

But now I think the ex has gotten new plates and registered the vehicle somehow in my name. The a55hole has caused so much pain and suffering for me and my family that I would like for him to be held accountable for his illegal activity. Hope someone can assist ❤

Instead of thinking he re-registered it why not ask the place of registration.

Get it revoked and how it it possible it happened. Also let the police know too.

who cares if the offending driver gets dealt with - it won't help you to keep any kind of contact/emotional link to the past

do the stat dec and move on

get VR to put a note on your file, with your tel number, that if anyone tries to register a car in your name, they are to ring you to confirm this

+1, while everyone loves a good bit of justice, the goal is to remove the debt from your name, and then put steps in place to stop it happening again.

How much is the car worth? Report it as stolen, he would then be charged with theft of a motor vehicle and you could sell it to make some $$. If he doesn't want to be charged with theft he would need to explain how he managed to fraudulently register it in your name.

    • Would you take your own advice?
Would you make false claims to the police?

If the car is registered in her name it is her car.

It is not that wrong. If the vehicle was in OP's name and the ex partner took it without changing the registration to his name it can be considered stolen.
OP should have reported it stolen straight away and she would not be liable for all fines/etc.

Go to police now make a stat Dec and speak to them about situation and see what they say! I would also contact legal aid on Monday asap and see what they say. Must be actioned none to avoid any further issues.
Also, I am very sorry to hear what you have been through.
I assume you have something with the rego listed, so go onto Vic roads website and check rego to see what car it is!

I'm smelling an attempted vexatious ex-spouse claim here.

Sorry, but a lot of this story doesn't seem to add up…maybe things are different in Vic, but here in NSW a simple notice of disposal would have ended this immediately.

I'm sorry I can't offer any advice, but well done for getting yourself out of an abusive relationship
