Any ideas on where to fly from Melb on a budget xmas holiday?
Or any suggestions on cheap travel ideas over the 2 week xmas break?

2 adults only.
Will I need to book campsites if we decide to do a roadtrip?
Anybody hired a caravan before and what was their experience like?
Campsites or hotels will need to be booked for that time of year.
A road trip doesn't have to be in a caravan or campervan. For example you may just want ocean view accommodation for a week somewhere along the Great Ocean Road.
You could also hire a cabin. You can definitely still find spots, look into it now and book ahead. You often need to pay upfront for one night's accommodation if you ring to book.
My husband and I drove around Australia on our honeymoon, and rocked up to places and booked in as we went (powered site for our camper trailer). You can't assume that you'll find a spot in the peak period though!
Make a list of all the possible places you want to go and slowly work your way through to find one with a vacancy. You can do it on the way, particularly if you are okay with an unpowered site, but if you're looking for a cabin or onsite van, you're going to need to book ahead, I would expect.
Cheap flights and Christmas time don't go together. I suspect the cheapest flights will be from Avolon Airport to Gold Coast, Sydney, Hobart or Adelaide on Jetstar.
Often it's cheaper to fly on Christmas day itself. And if you can fly back closer to mid January it will be much cheaper than early January.
Here's two searches to give you an idea of flight prices:

Otherwise a road trip could also be a good option. Presumably you're taking one or more adults/children with you?
