Help with iPhone Activation Lock: Bought on Gumtree and Seller is no contactable

I bought an iPhone 6s via Gumtree and picked it up last week but after I restore and update it to the latest sw, i was stuck at the Activation Lock screen which require the previous owners icloud details. I tried to reach out to the seller but it seems to be off; went directly to voice mail. I went to the apple store and they just ask me to reach out to the seller to have it unlocked.

Anyone has any solution or know where i can resolve this issue ? Thanks.

Any reason to think you weren't sold a stolen/found iPhone?
AFAIK there is no alternative besides the rightful owner unlocking it.

  • I was given the box and all the accessories; did not think it was a stolen/found iphone. Will have to be more vigilant in the future ..

    • maybe email the owner of the icloud account to find out if its stolen.

I did but there was no response too. I suspect the owner sold it to me, report it as lost to claim insurance on it … or at least that is what I gathered from reading other forums.

    • Unfortunately, this is now a common occurring scam.

Do you have any proof of purchase made?
Like an ATM receipt, or video footage?
I would contact the police… if you don't get your money back, at least you might be able to prevent them from doing this to someone else.

    • What would be the point of that?

Why wouldn't he just sell the phone so gumtree buyer could use it?

seller paid insurance then sell, then claim as lost, he got money and get replacement.
buyer lost money and get bricked phone

        • Oh bugger. Got ripped a new one from a stranger. Socks big time

        • I was asking what reason why would the seller have not just taken off the password lock. He would have got money from the seller and a replacement from insurance anyway.

I wonder if this will give a clue to if the phone was stolen

For the benefit of anyone else who want to buy second hand iphone, always ask the owner to do the following before parting with your cash: 1)sign out of Find my phone 2)Do a Erase all content and setting.
The reason for point 2 is that if point 1 wasn't done properly, the seller would not be able to proceed to point 2.

OP: This is a feature of iOS, to prevent theft and stolen phone. Assuming that the seller may have genuinely forget to sign off his icloud account and he/she doesn't want to tell you his icloud account details so you can unlock it, you can ask the seller to do it remotely by signing into icloud.com and remove the phone from "find my phone" list (First ask him to erase the device then remove it off his icloud account, after that you can activate it).

  • I've already did inform the seller but have not heard back.

Anyone had similar encounter and manage to resolve it via 3rd party icloud unlock provider?

I found some on ebay, not sure if they are legit.

The third party unlocker is useless to you, because they require the phone's existing Apple ID details – which is what you're missing in the first place.

Don't get too aggressive with the seller just yet, there is still a slim chance they legitimately forgot to remove it from iCloud. I've forgotten to do this (once!), the buyer rang me on his way home, brought the device back, and I unlocked it and apologised profusely.

If the seller is still unresponsive after some polite enquiries, then you might start asking them if they are interested in charges of fraud.

  • why didnt you check it when you bought it?
