    • You work in your free time? What?

      • That's saved for sleeping

        • +4

yep some ozbargainers will waste several hours to get $1 refunded. its like when a shop runs out of 5c coins and your stuck behind the customer and checkout staff who fight over 5c change - do you realise how much of your time 5c is worth?

    • +7

I cannot believe you just made this comment, that's a good 3 bucks down the tube.

  • -5

Don't leave any pubic hair behind as my sister in law found in her order.

    • +4

How do you know it's not goatee hair?

    • Pics.

  • +2

My local wants the secret to remain…..

    • My guess is that the store is too stingy to employee an extra person for the tour and giving out some food.

  • The managers do a fantastic job!

  • +16

omg my shift is on that day, so excited to be seeing some ozbargainers
omg if you say ozbargain ill slip a burger or two in your bag

    • +1

same on chrome … Worked in IE though..

      • +1

        Is it opposite day?

        • +3

Today IE team will have a major celebration.
          Unless
it turns out that ms IE bought kfc to give such an offer on such designed website that only IE can run it to prove themselves.. probable!

    • same here, i got a feeling it will be sold out already ..

    • All fixed now

  • +12

    Date night sorted.

  • +1

My local (Randwick, NSW) is not included in offer. Every KFC within a 7km distance of CBD is apparently already booked out. Found a few available bookings in rural Victoria.

  • +3

I get the feeling the listed stores are the only health inspector approved. Hahaha

    • +1

I don't think so… My local KFC which gave a girl brain damage through salmonella back in 2005 is open for a tour!

      • Shhh, don't tell everyone. They'll all want extra salmonella added.

    • My store is listed, for some strange reason and the kitchen hasn't been renovated for over 10 years, everything is so old.

  • Thanks! Just booked in now~!!!!Granville!

  • I just got the last spot in Keysborough. So there is still hope

  • just booked Clayton VIC one! Last spot!! Ain't I lucky!

  • +1

Thanks. Remember guys to bring out your OzBargain personality out during the tour to score as much free food as possible. So last year instead of getting 2 Original Recipes, Regular Chips and Drinks, I got the 2 Original Recipes, Large Chips, Large Drink, Twister and a Original Fillet Burger. Was a great meal.

Hoping I can beat that this year. Wish me luck :)

    • +1

      how?

      • Officially its only a burger meal. Unofficially, the store manager may be more generous. The one I went to a couple month back let you pick anything off the menu.

    • What is this 'Ozbargain personality' you speak of? Do you suggest that we should act like TA's and ask whether we can get a good deal on the KFC uniform?

      • +1

No, the 'OzBargain personality' is when you demand lots of free chicken, and when they say no you threaten to report them to the ACCC.

    • How did u score that? What is "OzBargain personality"? lol

      • By OzBargain personality, I mean like say stuff to the tour guide that will allow you to get more food then officially you should.

Ask yourself the question 'What can I say or do during the tour to score more food?'

        • "I like your eyes"
          "nice shirt"
          LOLLLL

    • didnt ask for more, but my granville KFC gave each of us (total 3ppl only) 3 pieces orig recipt, large chips, frozen mountain dew (we asked this one), dinner roll, mesh potato. Me & my husband r super happy.

p.s. last time in diff store we hv 2 pieces meal each.

  • +1

Went last time, was kinda interesting. The chefs were obviously good at what they do. Store I went to shouted whatever lunch we wanted up to an ultimate box, which was nice of them.

Be sure to give them some quality feedback for their time, because theyre probably pretty new to the tours thing too :)

    • +1

yep, being nice to them and also bringing out your OzBargain personality goes a long way in getting extra food.

  • +3

Last year my booking for 2 people got cancelled by them, and they gave me $25.90 KFC voucher as compensation :D

    • +1

      Oddly specific monetary value.

      • Nothing on the menu worth 25.90

        • +1

          What about $12.95?

        • +1

@Alzori: Wicked Wings Dinner Pack: 12 Wicked Wings & 2 Large Sides for $12.95.

  • This is so cringe. What a way to spend Saturday morning

    • Indeed, almost pervvy! Standing with a bunch of strangers in a cramped kitchen dusted with secret recipe as the spotty manager bangs about the passion of his hungover, blue plastered staff on a Saturday morning, for Zinger and a fekin pop??? I'm in!!!

  • +3

I used to work at a KFC (Dec 2010)
Any questions just ask if you're curious, assuming they haven't changed anything.

    • How is the gravy made?

      • +1

        2 forms.
1st is powdered form. Usually used as a backup.
2nd is from the chicken fines. When you prepare to clean the deep fryers, you first drain most of the oil out into a trolley thing that recirculates the oil, there is a filter there and a sachet of filter powder). After you drain the majority of the oil (maybe 80%?), in the bottom of the fryer there's a cylindrical pod thing with the heaviest remaining oil/sludge. This is poured into a screen filter so the burnt solid crumbs/bits from the frying process is discarded. The heavy sludge bit is your gravy.

        Potato mash is all powder.

Chicken is delivered daily, although the chicken cooked on the spot is usually delivered 1-2 days before (nothing wrong with that though).
Also they have "random" inspections to ensure cleanliness was ensured.

        • Ahh… how often are they cleaned?

        • +3

          @eug:
          Twice a day
There's a cook (and cleaner) in the day to arvo, then a second one takes over after.
The cleaning happens at the end of the shift ready for the next person to start.

        • @cwongtech: Ahh, that's good to know! My friend showed me a video online that said it sits there for 3 days, at least in the UK.

        • +2

          @eug:
Just to clarify, the cook is the cleaner as well :P

        • +2

@eug: We freeze the left over gravy mixture from the fryers and that is what's left a couple of days. After that it get's dilluted into boiling water

  • I have a feeling I will be the only person attending the tour at my local. Nobody seems to use the 'internet' or technology generally here. The gulf that exists between store attendant comfort and skill level regarding the 7-Eleven fuel app in my area and those in the City of Whitehorse, for example, is considerable.

  • Damn, they've now made it ages 16 or over for the tour!!

My kid loves getting to check out what goes on at his local, wonder if they'll let it slide??

    • +1

You can give them a call beforehand, I'm not promising anything but they could be nice.

  • +1

Thanks, being meaning to do this every time it's on, will be good to check it out. My local kfc is awesome

    • Yes it is. Wish I could buy 2-for-1 zinger burger (via express) and free chips/drink from survey.

  • Can i go to the same store 2nd time ,will they be ok ?

    • Have a hair cut before 2nd visit, they wont recognize you.

    • they would love for you to join them again

    • I picked another store, slightly further away.

    • -3

Why would anyone go on the tour a second time..?

      • +3

        Free Food?

    • Yep, they'd love it because it means you were happy last time.

      • Ok thanks for the encouragement..will there 2nd time..i like free quality food

  • Are there any available?
Ive searched 30km surround sydney, all 'Booking Closed' even before 2 hours of '24 hour before public'

    • Mona Vale

    • Its 5 per store. It get Ozbargained fast.

    • Muswellbrook

  • Will I get to see chicken with 6 wings and 4 drums? How excited will that be!

  • +2

I did the last one. I eat more KFC now.

  • The URL above does not help in finding nearby KFCs. Does anyone have the eventbrite URL for 2016 Open kitchen ? Thanks

    • What you talking about? Click on that link, type in your postcode or suburb and it will list stores nearby that has Open Kitchen.

  • +1

KFC kitchen tour? You mean ozB meet-up.

  • Still a couple stores around SE QLD with vacancies

  • Damn I got a call two days ago asking me to confirm if I would be able to show up. I was at work so I was kind of busy and just confirmed without giving it much thought. Does anybody here know if its alright to attend this as a couple or is it only for individuals? Also, i'm pretty sure I was told to show up by 10:15 but I'm not a 100% :(

  • +1

Went to 401 Swanston st store, was told by manager she never heard this activity. Well done KFC :)

    • +1

Same issue - went to Vermont, suspected something when i walked in the door due to the lack of humans, asked at counter and was feed a similar line - they wouldnt do it during store hours etc blah blah.

      Joke

I can only urge everyone else in this situation to lodge a complaint via KFCs website - only way the problem can be addressed.

  • +2

Next time, if you sign up, show up. It's nice to have a personal tour and all. But there are probably people that missed out due to the no shows taking up space.

  • +1

My friend made a booking for the Sunnybank Plaza KFC. Got there today… and found that they had shut down!
He went over to the one on Mains Road to see if he could squeeze in. Turns out none of the 5 who booked show up, so my friend had a private tour.

  • +1

Just attended the tour this morning. Some of the people in the tour were weird. You can tell they were there just for the free food and had no interest at all in the process.

Overall, it's an interesting experience. I still have some questions I didn't manage to ask. Perhaps someone who worked/works with kfc can answer this?

    1) Are the pressured fryer custom made for kfc?
    2) How long do u keep fried chicken in the warmer before they get thrown out?
    3) How much would it cost to get a franchise for kfc?

    • +1

Don't work for KFC but asked some questions.

      1) not sure if they're custom made but they're 75k a pop.
      2) chicken in the warmer all have a time label attached. Seems like they have a 60-90 minute limit before thrown out.
      3) most food court ones are franchised. Can be anywhere over 350k+ dependent on location and terms of the shopping centre etc

    • +1

      2) 1 hour for wings/fillets/tenders. 90 minutes for original pieces.

    • +1

      1) Can't remember, they have different time settings and temperature memorised to each number, I don't think they're custom made. We had circular cages (imagine a cylindrical bird cage) that had slots in the middle to hold the different pieces of chicken at different levels and ensure good oil contact. These cages would most likely be made specifically for those machines.
I think another store had a different type of fryer though.
      2) The manager is responsible for checking time tags on the trays, however, once, the manager told me to write new time tags on the existing chicken… After the set amount of time the chicken starts to get dry :|
The time tags are literally a piece of paper attached to those plastic clippy tags you find on the top of plastic packaging for bread loafs (like tip top)
Not sure if they've changed it.
You're supposed to clip it on the metal trays where the cooked chicken was held, so that theres a time tag attached to each metal tray of chicken.
      3) No clue

      • I was also gonna ask, sometimes I get chicken with bits of internal organ (liver?) stick to it. It's disgusting. Wonder what's that?

And the chicken pieces are getting smaller…is that bcoz chickens get slaughtered younger?

        • +1

I was also gonna ask, sometimes I get chicken with bits of internal organ (liver?) stick to it. It's disgusting. Wonder what's that?

You're supposed to pick them out as the cook, they're under the thigh piece.
Some cooks are lazy and say "oh the heat will kill off anything" (said the cook that trained me)
Bloody lazy employees. They could apply that logic to chickens that fallen on the floor, although I didn't witness anything like that happen because usually there's just one cook (me) during any shift.
Make a complaint to their manager or something.

        • @cwongtech: I've been on 2 tours (2 stores) and I learned something each time. The most stated tip is that the managers REALLY want to hear a customer's complaints. They can't fix something they don't know about. Both assistant managers leading the tours said this numerous times.

  • +2

i was the only one who confirmed by phone and showed up at the store :(
store manager told me she got extra staff to come in today in anticipation. they really need to do something about the no-shows stuffing it up for the genuinely interested, as well as the staff. i still think a refundable deposit is the way to go; clearly a free, delicious lunch isn't enough to get some losers to commit!

  • We weren't even offered a free lunch…the tour was great, well worth the trouble, but disappointing that some managers/stores are too stingy to provide as offered.

    • +4

You should file a complaint as even if they are stingy, officially you're suppose to get a zinger/original fillet burger, regular chips and a regular drink.
