New bed on the cheap?

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a queen bed set up on the cheap. I think it's reasonable to not want a second hand mattress but I know as an ozbargainer, I should suck it up.

So with a budget of under $500 for a mattress and base (ensemble or sturdy bed) I'm thinking I will look on gumtree for a second hand base and buy new for the mattress. I've had a look around Dreamland, Super Amart and Fantastic furniture in Adelaide and the cheapest are around the $300-400 mark but I've also seen cheaper ones on ebay for $200. Is eBay beds a bad idea? Am I truly going to notice a difference with the cheaper beds? I know I should try them out in store first.

    I think buying a mattress is one of the biggest investments anyone can have. You spend so much time on it and the impacts a bad mattress can have on your back and quality of sleep leading into work/study performance can be huge. Cheapest solution I recommend to family and friends is an Ergoflex memory foam mattress, you can pick up a queen for around $900ish. Then grab any bed frame off gumtree for under $100.

    Because of hygiene I suggest against even a 2nd hand ensemble unless its shop soiled or demo. Find a good 2nd hand bed frame instead.

    Have you tried around your local, unbranded place? In Sydney there is a place on parramatta road called beds and beyond and it sells really nice mattress around that price. They don't have to pay franchise fees for the branding and it is a small family business. There must be something similar around yours??

      Yep there is, I was just about to suggest "Makin Mattresses", if you check the reviews there are some unhappy fuss pots but I have several mattresses from there and they are all great.

      I have purchased two bed frames from eBay and it's a mixed bag IME. One was junk the other was excellent.

      OP have you checked the price of an ensemble in comparison to a mattress and frame?
