You have to really like your TV to go for this one (pricey) . A simple explanation of what it does:

Upscales video to output 4k.
Improves the picture.
Pretty much does for the picture what an AVR does for sound. I pretty much think if you're going to spend heaps on sound you also need to get this sort of stuff.

The calibrator (and software):
makes your TV show the correct picture. Corrects colour etc.

You can pay someone to come and calibrate your TV (some better TV's allow this), but that's a one off procedure. Though you could pay for a lot of those for the price of this device.

Lots of models available. They have some that output 1080p picture for US$1599 (refers) or new from US$2199 right up to the US$7199 with loads of inputs and outputs.

I have the (similar) DVDO iScan Duo (which only does 1080p) with the same calibrator as included in this Radiance package and it took my Panasonic plasma (considered the best TV when I bought it) from pretty average looking (I thought) to a very realistic and much improved image. The calibration runs on a laptop connected between the processor and calibrator which hangs in front of the TV. It's very automatic - you don't need to be very technically minded to work it.

What makes the Radiance the best video processor?

The Radiance is first and foremost a full-featured video processor designed from the ground up as a user-friendly addition to a quality home theater installation. It offers the following:

Up to 4K UltraHD (2160p at 60Hz) video processing and proprietary Lumagen No-Ring™ scaling

Modular I/O allows upgrading to new HDMI technology as it becomes available (some models only)

  • I'm totally misled with the word "FREE" in the title.

    • Well, they call it free. Given the price it is a bit of a cheek.

  • If you're happy with 1080p here's the package I have for US$1499 (plus shipping and import duty no doubt)

I can recommend the Darbee DVP-5000S for US$199 too (it's built into the Radiance).

    Any deals on Monster Cables?

    • Hey, people spend heaps on the audio component of a home theatre, why not on the video? You might think this is in the realm of the overpriced BS Monster cables, but it really does make the picture far better than standard. I was really disappointed when I first got my Panasonic TV. The colours were all over the place (compared to my previous TV).

        why not on the video?

        1. You can do the same calibration with a $200 device and a simple guide.

        2. You can buy an expensive TV with a good picture instead of a (one hopes for the sake of wallets) cheap TV and a $5000 video processor to improve the image.

        3. Monster cables have been shown conclusively to do nothing at all unless one is using them in a room that requires cables lengths that almost no one at all uses due to most people not being multi-millionaires and owning their own cinema size media room. So almost everybody spending money on Monster video cables is a fool who has educated themselves via Monster marketing, salespeople or both.

        • A processor also improves the image in real time, but it would be interesting to see if it could improve the picture of the latest top level TV's (like OLED). You can also calibrate separately for each input.

Also a $200 device isn't going to produce as good a calibration as this one (though it would probably be well worth it and a hell of a lot cheaper). Manual calibration is not simple.

        • Can you point me to a 3D LUT for $200?

I think I did it "on the cheap" when I set up my projector with an Eecolor 65 point cube (http://www.displaycalibrations.com/eecolor_order.html), but that still cost me $US299 plus shipping. I then added the Darbee to the chain (http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=14914).

On top of that you will still need a colorimeter and software. The x-rite i1d3 will cost you a little under $AUD300. You can use displaycal as a free software package (personally I ended up buying a license of lightspace).

        • I think that was why Steptoe made the Monster Cable remark - suggesting that this Radiance processor is a similar overpriced, non improvement on the garden variety version. This shows a lack of knowledge of the area.

I can think of worse ways to spend 6 grand, but only because I am a very imaginative boy

If you're thinking of buying this or have actually bought monster cables then see your GP about a mental health checkup. Autism, OCD, among other likely problems. This is not a joke. Without help it will just get worse

    • Ok, so it's not the kind of money you would spend in this area. That's a personal choice surely? We all could think of things others spend what, in our opinion, is a ludicrous amount on things.
