I Have Spent 2 Years Creating 'gasbottlerefills'. a Website to Help OzBargain Members Find Cheap Refills/Swaps in Australia

Hi fellow OzBargainers!

I've spent two years creating a powerful tool for you all.

www.gasbottlerefills.com/

These are the reasons I created gasbottlerefills:

I am nearly 80 years old. My wife, Barbara, and I are 'grey nomads'. We travel Australia in our motorhome for 8 of the colder months each year.

Our first major trip was from the East Coast to the West and back via the Nullarbor. We had no idea in advance how much gas we would use, no idea where to refill (we did not want to swap our new bottles), nor how much we would have to pay.

As it turned out, we refilled our 9 kg bottles FIVE times at an average cost of $36.00.

I decided there had to be a better way. So I started a Facebook Group called 'BBQ Gas Bottle Refills' and invited grey nomads and others to join, on the understanding that within 6 months they would report on at least one location where they refilled or swapped and how much they paid.

The idea went gang-busters! Within 18 months there were 3,000 members and 1,200 locations.

Our second big trip was up 'The Centre' and down the East Coast, thru some of the priciest gas country in Oz.

This time, because we knew how much gas we were using and where we could get it cheap, we were able to refill SEVEN 9 kg bottles.

This time the average cost was $19.02 … a saving of almost $17.00 per refill.

On that trip we told fellow travellers about our Facebook site. Sadly, the majority said they didn't like Facebook for a variety of reasons I won't bore you with here.

So Barbara and I 'bit the bullet' and spent a considerable amount of our retirement savings having one of Aust leading web design companies build us a classy website.

Eventually, if we build a big enough audience, we may be able to re-coup some of our money through advertising.

If not … well, at least we are doing something to help others … and that's really all you can do in this life.

I'd like you to check the website out … www.gasbottlerefills.com … but please … be sure you also look at the menu item "Great Travel Tips" http://gasbottlerefills.com/great-travel-tips/

That way you will get a whole lot of information not readily found in the "Find Cheap Gas" section

If you find any issues with the website, or know any locations and prices we don't have, there is provision on the site for you to tell us about them. I'd love to hear from you!

Best wishes

from an old bloke, known to his mates as

Ranndy Stone.

Approach them as a site sponsor when you have sorted out the issues and have a bit more traction.

        • Gravy Lol … Two steps ahead of you on that one. I am a retired Advertising Agency man!

A great idea… and well done on bringing that idea to fruition, it's no easy feat even if someone else is handling the website design.

Once you have the Australian site humming along nicely you could probably upscale it to NZ, Europe, USA.

The site is down at the moment so I'll just go by memory on what I quickly saw this morning on my phone and make a few suggestions, whether they are easy for your developer to implement I'm not sure but there are lots of plugins available for wordpress sites. Some of this stuff is perhaps adding too much complexity, but worth a thought.

As someone else said, sorting by price is quite important, but then travellers may also likely want to choose a store based on the following info which you might consider adding later down the track:

Distance (which I think you already have, roughly based on postcode). Suggest possibly working off current GPS location from phone as well as an alternative to postcode and town name. There are databases available that convert GPS co-ords to postcode I think, not sure how much they cost though (got the feeling that at least one may be free).

Elevation from current location (or an elevation profile). For those towing larger vans etc. Buyer may not want to use a store that is close but up a very steep rise for instance. I think that Google maps has this info available now, you may be able to tap into that. Edit: Yep… try https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/elevation/i…

Ease of access / long vehicle parking.

Turnaround time, some stores will fill on the spot whilst others may only fill at certain times of the day or expect you to come back in a few hours. Which can be a pain if you are just travelling through and don't want to hang around.

As far as the design of the site goes, looks great but I found the listing took up a lot of vertical space on a phone, might want to have less details shown by default but have user able to drill down if they want exact address or poster details etc. Or perhaps listings that unfold/expand when you click them.

If you are not already doing so, it might increase site participation if you give posters/spotters increased recognition the more they post or update their pricings, whether by little digital awards or star ratings, or medals, ranks etc.

Not sure what you are using for ads offhand, but consider using something like www.buysellads.com to supplement existing ads, without having to go out and source advertisers yourself. You then set a figure as to how much you want to charge advertisers and see if you get any takers.

Sites such as www.fiverr.com and www.upwork.com or www.freelancer.com might also help in sourcing providers to get some jobs done for low cost, fiverr.com is especially worth a look as people are willing to do quite a lot for just a few dollars in some cases.

Good luck… and great effort so far. I love the idea.

Hey, great site Ranndy Stone. It's an inspiration that you are still coming up with innovative new solutions at the age of 80. Awesome! Love how you set it up so that the community of 'nomads' help keep everything up to date as well.

    Great job!

kwbvstum - yes, doing this over the past two years has taken 20 years OFF my age! OMG if only I really was 60, What an exciting time ahead for me then. As it is, after the stroke in 2012 I am just grateful for every sunrise I see.

Doesn't work for me on IE11, Edge, Firefox or Chrome. I have ublock origin on Chrome and Firefox, but IE11 and Edge are stock. I can click the links but no search box is visible anywhere. The 'report errors' box doesn't come up either.

Looks like a great concept though. I forwarded it onto my 'grey nomads'. Good luck!

    • +2

I think part of the site has fallen over since yesterday due to higher than anticipated visits.

    • +1

yeah Chrome & Firefox here no ability to search & the Oz map isn't clickable. But I guess that is a hiccup.

  • +1

great site - can i ask one thing - can you do a post on your site about how to check how much gas is left in your bottle? i have no idea and just wait to it runs out — - and hope that its at the end of a bbq or think its close.. i suppose if i'm getting it refilled it doesn't really matter does it..

    • +3

Pour boiling water on the bottle down one side (I think this works better in the shade).

Wait a few moments and the empty part of the bottle at the top will dry quickly, the bottom of the bottle with remaining gas will remain wet and you should be able to see the gas level.

I think this works because the cool gas at the bottom dissipates the heat from the water quickly thus cooling the metal before the water gets a chance to evaporate, the top section stays hotter longer and the water evaporates off quickly.

A great idea and I hope it works out well for you. Maybe it's a temporary glitch or the fact that I'm using Firefox 39.0 (don't want to upgrade to the latest version), but I can't access any of the information. Your help text says "Under that is the text box “Enter Postcode or Town Name”". I don't see that, and can't find a way to select my area of interest.

I am also a grey nomad, but by sea instead of by road. I have 4kg stainless cylinders on board so would not want swap 'n go, and 9kg cylinders won't fit in the storage compartments. Does your site cater for these? Is there a date field to show when the price was recorded?

One of the difficulties of gas refills when travelling by boat is transport, as they can't be taken on a bus or taxi. As noted by Gravy, turnaround time is useful to know.

    • Dabbler68 - No the problem is not your your browser. It is simply that OzBargains is so popular and successful that my website was not set up to handle the unexpected volume of hits we would get from OzBargainers. Due to circumstances beyond my control, we are unable to get things fixed until tomorrow. Funny isn't it … hardly anyone knew about my site before Friday so could never have got the information it contains anywhere else … but now they know about it, I get insulted (not by you) because they CAN'T SEE IT.

website is too busy for simply showing where you can get gas bottles..

from what i can see the whole website just seems to be spam supagas ads and no actual way to find "cheapest" gas???

    • +1

Website is currently broken due to influx of visits.

      • Gravy Thank you for your support. It really hurts after all the work I have put in that I have to suffer insults like someone else here has dished out here

        • I'm not insulting you, I suggest putting wordpress into maintenance mode until the website is fixed so people don't get confused when it isn't working.

        • +1

storyteller - I am nearly 80 years old. I have so much to learn. I don't know how to do that or even that you could or I would have

        • +1

The OzBargain 'hug of death' (yes, I stole that from Reddit).

        • +1

No problem, but the best thing to do when you receive comments like this is to not reply straight away as you will most likely always be in defensive mode. Take 5 minutes then come back to any negative critique with a fresh view on it as there can be some important info you missed when reading it the first time. I know first hand how hard it can be to bite your tongue initially though.

Remember that things can move fast on the internet and whilst this can sometimes be in your favour, at other times it can bring you to your knees.

@Gravy: Thank you Thank you Thank you. I went to the link you provided and 5 minutes later I had "SITE UNDERGOING MAJOR MAINTENANCE" on screen. I have a grin on my face like a split watermelon

        • +1

@Ranndy Stone: Yeah… its not rocket science is it…. but if you don't know where to look, a little hand holding can certainly make life a lot easier.

You should probably put a message with estimated time of restoration .. "Check back Tuesday for the lowest gas prices in Australia" or whatever date you think you'll be up and running.

    • -1

      negs for constructive feedback

    • storyteller - you are SO WRONG as you will see when the website is up and running again. I will accept your apology then

      • +2

Huh? I went to your website and all the pages had broken wordpress tags and no way to use it like you said in the OP. Only content on the pages at the time was ads for some gas company.

        but ok.

        edit: it's still broken http://iforce.co.nz/i/mdwyymjp.cqt.jpg

        • +1

Yeah, I'm kind of with storyteller. I don't really see how his comments were particularly negative. No reason to get so defensive. Everyone here is only trying to make the site better :).

Slightly off topic - how does Grey nomads day look like? Do they keep travelling or driving during day and camp at night? I am really keen to know this. None in my family has ever done Grey nomad trips.

    • -1

pyramid - yes it is off topic and destined to be axed by moderators. So if you have messages turned on I will answer you privately.

      • +1

I guess my messaging is turned on since few years. If you see it turned off, let me know and I will sort it out with mods.

        • pyramid private msg sent

        • @Ranndy Stone: Hi Ranndy, I know you have your hands full, so do not want to add to your load. But since you have already written it up for pyramid, can you please send to me as well? I am also very keen to know about the typical grey nomad's day. Thanks very much in advance.

        • @bluesky: Maybe we should have another topic of discussion for this. Am sure more will be interested.

          Cheers!

        • +1

@FindMeADeal: I have the same thoughts initially too. But seeing Ranndy is probably not getting enough sleep at the moment, dealing with the website and related issues, I felt it may not be quite the right time. But agree, many people are probably interested.

  • Site Undergoing Maintenance - not a good look :(

    • +1

Better look than a broken website. It's back up now though by the looks.

  • +1

Thank you all for your patience. www.gasbottlerefills.com is now up and running again

  • +1

well, at least we are doing something to help others … and that's really all you can do in this life.

    GOLD

    Cheers Mate!!

  • +3

This is excellent - well done!

Shame the bunnings prices can't autopopulate in… but this is great. I go through at least a bottle a month on my bbq (i bbq 3-4 days a week). I didnt even know of all these cheap, non-bunnings locations around me.

Good on you - well done! I hope you make a return on your investment. I get your humble attitude towards helping others, but sometimes you just want people who do something good to be rewarded for it too.

I've clicked all banner ads. Best of luck!

    (and thanks!)

  • +1

Thank you. and I wish I knew this website last week when my gas bottle empty in the middle of roast.

anyway good luck and wish you all the best.

I have cllicked on all your banner ad too :)

    keep up the good work.

  • +1

Can't actually work out how to "find cheap gas", do I click "find cheap gas" navigation item up the top? If so that is just returning a page with [SLPLUS]

    • aussiemillion you have to turn off your device and reload the website. Your cache is holding the cookies that were loaded while the site was down.

      • +1

I had the same issue and can confirm the cache is the problem. Using Firefox on Windows I clicked the refresh button. Rebooting the PC didn't do it, but refresh did.

Brilliant idea! Thank you for including the NT

  • +2

awesome effort. Inspiring and I'll show to my parents.
    I was curious:

    a. How was your website design experience consideirng I am assuming you are not technical. How much did it cost roughly?

    b. What process did you go through in order to find the design company? Just google or friend recommended?

    c. How do you populate the data? You manaually look it up and then add it?

    • +1

Very interested in this mate would you be able to share this info ?
      Thanks

  • +1

very innovative idea. applauds for the efforts. Good luck!

On a related note, does anyone know what to do with gas bottles more than 10 years old (I.e. end of life)? Where does one take these to be retired?

    • therog Several options: 1. Advertise them on Gumtree … almost guaranteed to succeed. 2. Find (on gasbottlerefills.com) a location to have the bottle retested and restamped. Average cost $35.00. Good for another 10 years. 3. Take it to a Bunnings store and swap it for another bottle … cheapest option if you have a Bunnings nearby.

      • Does the above still apply to a tiny camping gas bottle (which had a couple of rust spots from memory)?

        • therog Price a new one. Three options above not worth considering. Take to local council waste facility for disposal.

        • @Ranndy Stone: Thanks Ranndy. That was my thought. I've had a new one for a year or two already, but just never knew what to do with the old one.
Maybe that's something to add to the site? Let me know when the donation button is ready for me to thank you!

  • Has anyone got any idea how much is Masters charging for a refill or swap?

    • As owners of gasbottlerefills.com our understanding of the situation with swap bottles at Masters is this: if they have sold stock, they are not restocking. Any stock they do have is being sold at the normal price of $22.50 (8.5 kg). They are not interested in reducing price as gas supplier will simply collect unsold stock and empties when stores finally close their doors and credit the returns. This may differ store to store (and there are 80) but our understanding is this is the policy. All Masters have been removed from our website database but you will find plenty of other low price refills (as low as $12.95 for a 9 kg) depending where in Australia you are. Thank you for question. Ranndy_stone

      • +1

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. Love you work Raandy_stone. Looks like it is a spin of a dice with Masters, might as well goto Bunnings and save on the fuel cost! :)

    • Sorry - forgot to mention - Masters (and Bunnings for that matter) NEVER refill these days. Swaps only. Bunnings current price is $19.85 & $17.88. Most BBQs Galore are best for 9 kg refills while BCF is best for 4.5 kg refills (much cheaper than Bunnings or BBQs Galore)
