does the school specify a certain range of specs like size, battery, wireless?

    • yeah i would pay close attention to the battery life. The longer the better. 5 hours is the bare minimum, 6 hours is better, but remember as the laptop ages, the capacity will degrade.

Most students can get by with a low-voltage processor like Pentium N3700 series, but for certain students who may do art / creative subjects and use Photoshop, Illustrator or Adobe Premiere, should get a Core i5 series laptop.

  • Thanks a lot guys, appreciate it.

No as far as I know school doesn't want anything specific.

    • what year is the kid in?
for years 7/8 probably the small and light 11" Dell which periodically drops to $320-330 during ebay sales.
for upper years may need a stronger processor.

Most secondary schools also require 5ghz wifi, so worth checking that out.

refurbished but light, 1080p, decent battery

  • Chromebooks are great for basic word processing and intertnet. Decent battery life, light and cheap. And, even better if your school uses Google apps.

  • now I know this isn't close to your budget but I am saying because of the features you should look for.
My son is in his last year (12) had an apple air for 4 years but was supplied by the school. (and bugger he just dropped something on it this week and broke the screen)

what is good and you should try to find similar is …
Battery life - lasts all day at school without a charge - kids are not allowed to charge at school (there wouldn't be enough power points anyway)
Size - 13inch screen , not too small (i think 11inch is too small) but over all the laptop is lightweight and easy to carry around to class, remember they have books to carry with it as well.
SSD and not hard drive, i think helps with its life and being bashed about at school a bit.

I suggest you spend as much as you can and get something that will last the life of school or close to it. You may find buying the cheapest you can find ends up you buying 2 or 3 in their school lifetime.

    • Adding onto this, if you're planning on going to uni as well, you might want to consider getting something with a longer lifespan.
I personally went from year 9 through uni with my 2011 MacBook Pro 13 inch. It's still going strong with no signs of slowing down.
If you can, at least try to find something powerful enough and with a solid lifespan
