I just discovered that Norton AV/Symantec has debited my Visa with an annual fee of $139. I have not used Norton for over 3 years. I checked and found they did the same last year when I was o'seas. I have spent hours trying to contact them with no answer, including email and American chat. Can anyone help with advice on how I can contact Norton to request a refund and that they stop?

I recently purchased Malware-Bytes, both Anti-Malware and Anti-Exploit, and the email confirming payment said in one years time it will auto bill using same CC details provided. I did not opt for this, it was automatic on their end. I do have the option to amend this billing feature though.
It is possible this same thing happened to the OP.
Is it possible you have an online account with them?
You could go to their website to the account login page and select the forgotten password link and provide an email address that you may have used.
If correct you will get a password reset link to which you can login and investigate.
As for the refund part, the recent bill should be no issue, previous years I think consider it a donation to Symantec.
Hope this is helpful.People still pay for Anti-Virus software these days??
Can I ask what you use for free? Do you use any anti-malware?
I use Avira and Malware-Bytes, but open to alternatives that I am unaware of!Windows itself has gotten much more resilient to viruses.
But I've been using Windows Defender alongside AVG and Common Sense for ages.
It works fantastically.Although I did later upgraded it to Avast!, then to Avira and Common Sense 2.0
(I see Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky as viruses themselves)
Windows Defender has never rated above average with any review that I have seen.
Not being an expert when not one review ranks it highly, is enough for me to pass on it.
Surprised you use 2 AV's!You cannot go past common sense!
You dont like Norton, etc for how they do things?
I just did a search and Norton offering money back if ever hit by virus! Also, you know of and use Steve Blacks host file?
Norton's "virus guarantee" is like the guarantee you get from Officeworks and how they'll beat it by 5%.
They hope saying such a thing would allow for more sales, and it does.
Guarantee doesn't come from a superior product, they just invade and scan a lot more than other programs.
And they flag many things as false positives, to ensure they "kept their word".
However, if they can't stick by their guarantee then they will make a billion excuses.
And on top of that, even if their product fails legitimately and they do honour their guarantee.
Just realise them paying your money back isn't you getting a good deal… you're (barely) getting your money back.
Especially when there's heaps of (good and) free alternatives out there.
And the virus you find helps fill their database, and get a leg-up over the competition.
So if anything, you did them a favour, and sold yourself short… because major bugs, vulnerabilities, and viruses are actually a big deal. Our company personally lost $90,000 because of a cyber attack.
Imagine what the value is of the vulnerability on iPhones to bypass TouchID, which the FBI has been having a problem with over in the US.So in terms of protecting your computer you either need to enforce common sense, or you have to be vigilant in maintenance.
The problem with me is that I'm a very hard worker/vigilant and very lazy at the same time.I spend a lot of time researching, figuring and making something to the best possible thing.
Then I get bored and lazy, and never go through the whole research process and keep it upto date. How this relates to my computer use?
Well, I used Windows Defender when it was early and by-God it was great. Of course, we didn't have great free Anti-Virus/Malware options back then and it was Norton this and Norton that. So I stuck with it, even though I know these days its redundant. I also stuck with AVG for a long time, before getting Avast! even though AVG stagnated. I only updated from Avast to Avira around Aus day last year, and honestly that was way too long to make the jump.Even though the whole process is as simple as an uninstall, download, install… I'm just that lazy.
I heard about Host files ages ago (2012 ?) and loved the idea of it. However, back then it was more of a proof of concept (or maybe it was Windows) but it never played well. I spent a good amount of time trying to get it to work, but I didn't quite understand it properly. So I eventually quite, just went back to ad-blockers.
I think they might've matured since then, and maybe even a better alternative, I just never bothered to really go back to it. Besides, at that time I was also playing around with Linux so things like ad-blockers and malware weren't as big of a deal. openSUSE was really stagnated since then, and as I expected crapbuntu just got worse.
Would you believe that now I use OS X??
I would've never believed it if you asked me a couple years ago. But its been surprising me with its quirks. Then again I did get the MBP i5/8GB/256GB for ~$1600 when the going price was $2100. And my other laptop is on its last legs.
That's why I've been super-hyped about building a mITX PC, and so bummed when I missed my chance at those Lenovo workstation deals that popped up two weeks ago. Yet, I should go and buy or build one before the Windows laptop completely dies on me and I can't connect to my work's servers from home… but I'm lazy.In fact, I'm so lazy that I bought the OG Note as soon as it was released… and then didn't use it for 2 months straight because I truly hated using TouchWiz. After trying some different custom roms, I was fuming, such great hardware was dragged by annoying software. So I began modding and going through AOSP, and this was a boiler period because ICS was just dropped. And one thing lead to another, and with some brilliant peers over the Pacific, AOKP was born. And long-story short, life got busy and I got lazy, it was the best software for the device but I never maintained/updated the OG Note which is still stuck on ICS 4.0.3.
I'm just a lazy, stingy OzBargainer lol.
Stingy = No to Norton
Lazy = Steve Black's work well (accord to reviews), I haven't used it because I use my Windows laptop only for work/safe sites.@Kangal: cool. A little more of a response than I was expecting.😀 I have eused Steve blacks host file for a while now with a simple script to Auto download and update. Not sure how effective it is in reality as of course it has no logging, but as it has no overheads, it is more just in case an issue with malware bytes, it is there as a backup.
I use SEP from either my dad's work enterprise software agreement or the uni one, depending on which version is more current.
I suggest speaking to your bank - you've got more chance getting your money back from the bank, than you do from Norton imo.
I use Kaspersky total security, seems to work very well
I tell you what I miss before it got ruined, was VET antivirus, any good IT guru will remember that was the #1 in Antivirus for years
You most likely opted in for a subscription service, why should they refund you?
