AmEx Shop Small Guide Wiki Discussion

There have been a lot of questions, answers and useful comments scattered throughout Ozbargain posts over time about the American Express Shop Small promotions.

To help people find information or answer questions more easily I have created the AmEx Shop Small Guide page, which puts all the information together in one place where anyone can add to or edit it. As a starting point I have taken all the information I found in other posts and comments about places to top up Opal, Myki and Go travel cards, as well as added some FAQs that people have often asked in deal posts. I hope others will help continue to contribute and update it.

Please use this forum topic for discussions about anything to do with the wiki page: Questions you have which you would like answered and added to the FAQ; Asking for opinions from other people before making changes; etc.

Great work! The same questions come around each time, so a Wiki is a good idea.

    great work!

  • Cool. Next time Shop small comes around I might update it with fuel places.

Anyone know if there are participating retailers that aren't listed? There were several businesses listed in previous promotions that weren't listed this time around.

    • I couldn't find any fuel retailers in Brisbane in the September Small Shop and didn't see anybody mention any elsewhere.

      • I found a few in Brisbane last year. Also a few at Sunshine Coast.

  • Thanks OP. FYI we recently created a Shop Small product tag, all the deals and forum discussions can be found on 1 page there for easy access.

    • Thanks hamza

    • Pardon the noob question :-). So in the "Type a Tag" field, what sort of text can we enter into it and what does it mean? What are tags in OZB context? Thanks in advance.

It's not really useful in this case, but it's useful if you want to find posts that have a combination of tags. Eg to find posts tagged "Sandisk" and "SSD": www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/ssd+sandisk

        • Now I get it, the tags are the category tags when a deal is submitted? Is that right? If so, thank you. If I am wrong, please correct :-)

@bluesky: Yes, click on any category tag in a post and you will see

Menzies in Syeney - EzyMart shop seem to have closed down - went there at 2 different times but it wasn't open.

  • I read in the Wiki:

    Can supplementary cards be used?
Yes. Supplementary cards must be registered separately and are treated as completely independent from the primary card. Supplementary cards must have a different card number than the primary card to be able to be registered. Unfortunately, Westpac and CBA bank issued supplementary cards are known to have the same card number.

So I have this clear in my mind; if I visit Store A and get the 10$ Shop Small Credit …the Supplementary Card Holder who has signed up and have a different card # etc. could buy something at the same time at the same store and also get the 10$ Credit?

      Yes

  • A quick question regarding amex issued amex and bank issued, I read from the wiki that bank issued can be used for shop small and the statement credits that are posted can usually be used with bank issued as well. Is there any offers that amex issued amexs get that a bank issued amex will not?

    • +1

Yes. Sometimes only particular cards have the offers available (eg only Amex Platinum Edge Cards). However if the direct link to register is available then any card can be registered.

  • This place is no longer part of Shop Small (but they do still accept AMEX):
Central Park Newsagency 393 Wattletree Rd, Malvern East 9509 9842 Yes $0.50

Went there and topped up Myki, never got Shop Small confirmation Email and then checked shop small map only to realize it's no longer listed as Shop Small :( it was on last time, not sure why they took it off?! :/

    • Call them and ask. Last time that happened to me they still gave me the cash back.

      • I wouldn't expect Amex to give the credit if a shop is not listed as a Shop Small participant.

@thriftybunny, I've added it to the "Not working" list.

      • Hi Nobita, I did Email Amex, they just said it's not on the Shop Small map so no promotion was available, hence no cashback :/ no explanation on why it wasn't included.

        • +1

Shops are only eligible to be included in Shop Small if they meet certain criteria and agree to additional conditions set by Amex. It is probably no longer included because the owner decided not to participate and/or did not agree to meet Amex's conditions.

        • @Dacs: Thanks, lesson learned, it's always good to check :)
