Do Many People Go On Cruises Here?

Looking for a relatively cheap way to travel around Europe, I got on a deal recently via vacationstogo on a Celebrity Cruise around the Mediterranean for next month. It worked out to be about $99 per person per day over 14 days, including all meals, taxes, excluding gratuities, in an ocean view stateroom. I was the in progress of posting the deal as it sold out unfortunately.

Just wondering if anyone else gets on the last minute cruise deals here and have gotten any bargains, recommended ships, etc? Do you use vacationstogo or other sites?

Holland America has an older crowd, but the food is amazing

I wish they had cruise deals for solo travellers. Would love to get a bargain in Europe or USA but they are always twin share prices.

    • Hi, are you male or female? I don't really care that much. I'm female and as long as there are boundaries, I couldn't care less. I'm looking for a cabin mate out of Sydney to take advantage of cheap November and February/March fares. I will only sail Royal Caribbean. Do you want to start a dialogue on this?

There were a few good last minute deals posted towards the end of last year. I think most people are looking at Australia and South Pacific cruises rather than ones farther afield.
Cruise guru and ozcruising get some good deals.

    P&o good enough for me!

Three deals in the last month suggests that it's relatively active. Not too many positive votes, but there's some interest.

Ozcruising do charge credit card fees, this changed at the beginning of the year, they also don't do anything other than book the cruise on your behalf, their service is almost nil now, still good if you are ok with that. There are lots of sites that offer cheap cruises, Cruiseguru is one that doesn't charge fees. There are a lot of pages on facebook that are very active in cheap cruises, as well as a dedicated forum on cruisecritic.

I've cruised a bunch of times, mostly from sydney. I did a europe cruise a couple of years ago, but after travelling around the rest of europe on trains on the eurail pass, I must say I found the time we were on the cruise to be really disappointing because you only get to spend a portion of the day in ports. with how easy it is to get around europe on the train, I'd never cruise that area again.

I did a 22 night cruise around Europe / Mediterranean 2 years ago. It was awesome. Celebrity will be fantastic. Princess are fantastic. Holland America are a step down, but do a really good breakfast buffet (8 different eggs Benedict derivatives). Have been on 6 different cruises to all parts of the globe.

    My tips:
On the first night ask at the main desk if you can cancel the gratuities. Then tip crew your own way. They also accepted beers!

Take note of the tour options, do them yourself. On the Europe cruise we got straight out and on to the trains. Really easy rail network to see the real parts of Europe. Other places, pay the operators cash at a price you dictate (around 50% or less).

Drinks, I picked up wine, beers and Whiskey in Monte Carlo. Walked straight on, no issue with security scans. They simply asked to give up any alcohol at a desk 20m down the corridoor (I must have forgot). This may vary with cruise lines (Holland America and Princess no problem).

Weigh yourself when you first get on, and then again at the end!

      Great advice! Thanks

I did a princess last year and loved it.

I've seen entire forums dedicated to the lengths people go to smuggle alcohol in - I'm surprised to hear you got on so easily.

      • I've never had an issue anywhere on any cruise. I just literally carry on a six pack by hand. Got to try a few local brews, and share them with your room guy. Only leaving Australia they checked my bag, which only had an allowed bottle of red anyway. In Villa they once asked me to hand in my duty free down the passage. So I gave them a bottle and left the other 2 in my bag. Just be friendly and it's all good.

  • Would definitely love to go on a cruise when I retire in 20 years time.

  • I published a deal just a couple of days ago regarding some crazy cheap prices MSC are offering for 2 to 3 day re-positioning cruises in the med (from $69 pp AND no port charges): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/266817

Have cruised with them before, and can recommend.

There was a 20 night cruise around the hawaiin islands, then through tahiti, on to Fiji, then New cal and Oz for under $2k including flights to hawaii and 2 nights in Honolulu. With Royal Caribbean. Literally on now off memory. So maybe this time of the year is cheap.

I enjoy cruising to beach destinations…done the standard south pacific islands twice. I love it for a summer holiday.

I'd hate it for something like Europe or basically anything other than a island/beach trip where i want to use every minute if the day to see and do things…meet ppl,go to different places, build my own itinerary. (Except maybe places like Alaska <3)

Whether it's for you depends on the type of traveler you are, what you enjoy and how old you are eg it's a great way for older people to travel when things are taken care of.

I thought that. But you get out and about all day and come back and everything is done and all your travel is done while you sleep. I admit that Europe was full days for 19 of the 22 and you need to be reasonably fit. We did an open jaw flying into London, then Barcelona, cruised to Venice then Greece via the med coast and then flew to Paris and then home. Flights were around $1500 with Etihad and the Cruise was $1800 (oceanview). Train tickets to places like Aix on Province/ Sorrento / Cinque / were around €6. So not bad value either. The little places were great. Be careful with Rome. I only just got back in time with a 5km sprint! (trains only ran hourly on the return leg)
