Just a tip, I've been a Hulu subscriber for a few years. You can buy Hulu 12 month subscriptions from eBay cheaper than the monthly cost. I think they bundle them with TV, DVD purchases and people sell them off on eBay.

    • So you obviously like the content? :)

      • +2

Yeah, use it mostly for new TV shows, sometimes older ones. Cast it to the Chromecast. We also use Netflix but that's become limited to Australia & US ever since Getflix (and all of the other smartdns/vpns) have been blocked.

Ads are actually funny to watch. I guess Getflix's Hulu server was in Wisconsin because we kept getting political ads from both candidates. Also lots of drug ads with lots of side effects.

That's what hit me when I went to the states for the first time. The prescription med ads are hilarious. Every drug is potentially deadly.

It's basically all the new NETWORK (not cable) shows within 24 hours of screening (except CBS). There's quite a bit of cable content on there too like Comedy Channel (Daily Show, South Park etc) and some other cable content which is often about a week or two old (eg MTV, Spike).

Obviously it's more useful between September - May when most of the new content is released.

They also have some original content but it's fairly hit and miss (I did enjoy Deadbeat though).

    • Can you still get them?? I haven't found them on EBay for a while now.

I used to buy them for about $40-50. But haven't seen them for over 6 months.

      • Last one I bought was in July 2015 for ~$52 AUD for 12 months and 12 months in May 2015 for $30 AUD (I think there were a bunch of eBay promotions at the time. My Hulu account says it's valid until July 2017 so won't have find out until next year.

    • People also buy the cards with stolen credit cards and sell them for cash.

    • You can still do this now can you….without the subs being stolen accounts or setup with stolen credit cards?

A lot of the legitimate sellers are no longer selling on eBay.

I wish you could, but you cant buy cheap subscriptions from eBay, Aliexpress, dhgate etc anymore, not for months. I have to pay full rates via my Roku account.

  • I thought Groupon deals posting were meant for EC only..

  • Can this be used for existing users?

    • New users only sorry!

  • Commercials

    Pass.

    • They also offer commercial free for about $4 a month more.

    Hulu is inferior to Netflix

Last time I trialed Hulu, the advertisements ran every 10 minutes . Mostly an annoying Geiko insurance or something

    • +1

They have a commercial free version now.

Also totally different beasts. Hulu gives you all the new shows now, Netflix is more like the video store and you have to wait a year for that content to appear.

I find subscribing to both gives me almost everything I need in my TV watching schedule.

      • Even with both you are missing out on CBS shows for example NCIS & Big Bang. And for example, Netflix has none of the Marvel catalogue in the US/Australia region. The whole thing gets kind of frustrating when you are trying to do things the ethical/legal way.

        • It does. You can't get 'everything' so no point trying. Besides I only have so much time in a day to watch TV. These two services give me more than enough choice.

It's a shame CBS are being difficult though and not signing up to Hulu. I'm not paying almost as much for their single channel service as I do for Hulu's better catalogue.

        • Netflix has none of the Marvel catalogue in the US/Australia region

          Age of Ultron
          Ant-Man

Just a couple off the top of my head :) Not exactly extensive, but they're still there

  • How do you get past hulu rejecting your credit card or paypal for not being US based?

    • I just kept trying different cards until one worked.

      • So you got it working today?

        • +1

I got it working about 2.5 years ago. Same problem existed back then.

I originally signed up using a Load and Go card which I put the address of as a pizza shop in Delaware. Eventually I just changed it to my CBA debit card and it let me.

      • Mmm Sadly none of mine worked.. any other tips?

        • Buy a prepaid (US) card?

        • @Lukian:
I used my 28 degrees card, Iused a bogus address.

        • @Lukian:

Yeah looks like that might be the only way, cheers.

        • Try Load and Go Travel card from Auspost (not the regular one, the travel card). When I went to the US to stay with my fiance for a few months, it worked with his address. I'm not sure if it still works though, but it definitely used to. ( July 2014 is when I was using it)

I don't use it any more since travel cards rates are bogus and the Qantas one is way better than the Load and Go anyway because it also nets FF points. EDIT: Just tried Qantas Card, it doesn't work.

        • @ceebee:

Funny you mention the Load&Go cards, I actually have one and tried it, but it didn't work. I guess either I got unlucky or something has changed.

        • @mishrael:

That's very strange, I just tried mine (I found it, it was still valid) and it worked with a US address and looks like I'm subbed to Hulu now. Is yours definitely the Load and Go Travel card version? As far as I know the regular Load&Go Reloadable is different and does not work.

But they may have changed the Travel version now, when did you get yours? As I said mine is from 2014. Perhaps ones after that are different.

    • Have you tried this site to buy giftcards? https://www.mygiftcardsupply.com/shop/hulu-gift-cards/

      • Not yet, I'll take a look, thanks

  • +1

The new shows have started on Monday or was it Tuesday? Anyway, thanks a lot. This allows me to enjoy them the legal way.

  • Has anyone heard of or tried Directv? Is it similar to Hulu? They always seem to have specials.

    • That's a satellite company like Foxtel. I think they have a streaming service but that would just be streaming of channels as opposed to Hulu which is streaming of individual shows.
