Lawn Mower

Hi there.. am looking for lawn mower. Would be first time owner so don't know much. Here are some of points:

  • front yard and backyard both around 170sqm each.
  • I would prefer electric (wired or wireless) as I think they are low on maintenance, but for some reason everyone saying go petrol. Thoughts?
  • No urgency but as eBay sales are going on so not sure if should miss it. Any known bargains currently?
  • Budget <$300

Are these good products:

I would recommend to just pick up a 2 or 4 stroke second hand mower from Gumtree for ~$100. There are heaps on there.

    • I wouldn't.. people who are selling second hand lawn mowers are the type who leave them in the rain all year and no zero maintenance on them..

I got a lawn mower from supercheap about 2 years ago (it has honda copy motor).. cost about $190 and does not miss a beat. If you change the oil every 10times u mow and spark plug once a year the thing will go for ever.

mind you the lawn mower I had before the above cost 3 times as much and didn't do any better job then the $190 one.

      • Get a 2-stroke Victa. No maintenance requied as the oil is in the fuel. Just check out the condition before buying second-hand.

I have a Ryobi 36v battery mower. It will do approx 200m2 of lawn on the 5ah battery, provided I haven't been to slack and the grass is too long. That is 200m2 give or take 5m2 of actual grass to mow as measured, not a rough estimate. A battery mower is likely to cost you significantly more that $300 to get a decent one and you would probably need two batteries assuming you have 340m2 of lawn.

Corded mowers are OK, but the time you spend rolling out the cord and rolling it back up is equivalent to the time you would spend on maintenance with a petrol mower. I depends on your lawn a bit on how efficiently you can run the cord around the yard. Our old house had a decent layout that worked OK, but the new house was more 'challenging' and I found the cordless on Gumtree for cheap.

Petrol might be best for a large lawn.

    • you must have thick/tall grass
i can do my 150sqm on the 2.6ah with enough juice to also do the edging and finish off with the blower.

I did note the smaller battery seems less powerful for the thick grass also, but I couldn't get the whole lot done with the smaller battery, even without the thickest grass. I've still got two batteries, but typically use the big battery first and it doesn't run out.

  • Buy and Honda and you'll never buy another mower
