Not related specifically to this deal, but I've just come back from Austria and Germany, where in ALDI/LIDL a 700ml bottle of vodka is 8 euros, or AUD$12. 700ml of Advocaat is 4 euros, or $6 (compared to $20 for 500ml here). Cigarettes are 6 euros a pack ($9). After seeing prices like that (and indulging more than a little) it appears to me that we're paying huge amounts of 'sin' taxes here. 7.5% off vodka is great, but when your starting point is $30 it's hard to get excited.

Booze in AU is cheap once you have been to SG.

      • Yeah, there are some places with much higher alcohol taxes than we do. Sweden is a good example, and likewise Singapore.

Taxes on your cigarettes pay for your community acquired pneumonia, your home oxygen, your antithrombolytic therapy, your stents and your coronary bypasses. Not to mention that taxes on drugs known to be harmful to the human body are used as a financial disincentive to reduce uptake of the drug and reduce continued use. Likewise for alcohol

I've seen more than a few patients seeking smoking cessation advice after the government raised cigarette taxes

That is indeed true. I don't smoke myself, but a friend does so I brought him some cigarettes solely in the interest of saving him some money. 50 smokes doesn't go a long way anyway for someone who consumes a pack a week. Why do people still smoke in Australia? It's so expensive! I honestly don't understand. I did see more smokers in Germany and Austria than I do here, so price does appear to have an impact. Yes I know it's an addiction and difficult to kick, but smokers make it sound like it's virtually impossible.

As for wine, we have an odd tax regime where it's based on price and not alcohol content. So a 4L cask of wine is very much under taxed while a bottle of Grange has far too much.

As to avoiding paying the tax, it's a little tricky with tobacco. Need to source the seeds and it's not like your locally nursery sells them. Alcohol? Water, sugar, yeast. Done.

        • Unfortunately a lot of black market cigarettes in box Hill, cabramatta etc. I think they go for something like $10 a pack. Shame the police don't do anything to stop this

  • Isn't it cheaper to buy from their ebay store with the 15%?
